Aiken Firebug Arrested in Crosland Park Fires; Suspect Just Released from Prison for Arson

Aiken investigators have arrested a career criminal in a series of fires that damaged four homes, including two that were total losses.

Jesse Andra Green, 35, of Aiken, was charged Tuesday with three counts of arson in the second degree and one count of arson in the third degree.

It wasn’t hard to pin the fires on Green. He was just released from prison after serving a few years for a 2013 arson and burglary in Aiken County. Green also had connections with several of the fire victims. And in one case, he was the first person to step forward as witness to the fire.

Aiken Public Safety officials say they confronted Green after realizing he was out of prison and frequented the Crosland Park neighborhood. The suspect confessed to starting the fires, police say.

Green has a list of arrests a mile long, mostly for disorderly conduct, trespassing, shoplifting and gross intoxication in Aiken County. He also has a two previous arson charges on his record from 2013. In those arson cases, he pled guilty and prosecutors dropped one arson count. A judge gave him a four-year prison sentence with five years of probation. He did not serve the whole four years.

In the Crosland Park neighborhood, Green’s accused of causing the  following fires:

  • At 2:30 a.m. May 16,  Aiken Public Safety responded to 655 Aldrich Street in reference to a structure fire. Upon extinguishment of the fire it was determined the fire was suspicious in nature. Fire investigators determined the fire was intentionally set on the outside of the structure near the back door. The home was a total loss.
  • At 9 a.m. May 9, Aiken Public Safety responded to 106 Brentwood Place in reference to damage to property. Officers located a grill near the backdoor, and the cover to the grill had been intentionally set on fire. The fire burned itself out prior to reaching the residence.
  • At 5:30 a.m. May 1, Aiken Public Safety responded to 104 Brentwood Place in reference to a structure fire. Upon extinguishment of the fire it was determined the fire was suspicious in nature. Fire investigators determined the fire was intentionally set on the outside of the structure near the back door. The home was a total loss.
  • At 11:30 p.m. April 18, Aiken Public Safety responded to 1216 George Street in reference to a structure fire. Follow-up investigation determined the fire was intentionally set on the outside of the residence near the back door. Damage was severe, but not a total loss.

Aiken Public Safety investigators were assisted in the investigation and subsequent arrest by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Forensics Unit. Green will have additional charges by Aiken County Sheriff’s Office for incidents which occurred within their jurisdiction.

Child Cruelty: Augusta Dad Makes 7-Year-Old Daughter Strip Naked for Belt Lashing

A young father in Augusta was arrested for child cruelty Wednesday when his 7-year-old daughter showed up at school with injuries from a vicious belt lashing, authorities said.

Andreas Deon Daniel, 25 (pictured), of the 3200 block of Kevin Drive, Augusta, was charged with cruelty to children in the first degree.

The little girl showed up Wednesday morning at Dorothy Hines Elementary School with injuries that drew the attention of her teacher and the school nurse. They called an ambulance to take her to Augusta University Medical Center. The pupil had bruises and belt marks all over her body, including her face, head, entire back, upper buttocks, both legs, shoulders, and both arms, a report says.

The victim told a school social worker and hospital staff that her dad had beaten her with a belt for getting into trouble at school the day before.

“Her father whipped her last night while she was standing and also continued to whip her once she fell to the floor from the pain,” a sheriff’s report says. “Her father made her remove her clothing before he whipped her.”

At the hospital, Dr. Amanda Andrews told investigators that “without a doubt, the injuries were way over the threshold for legal parental disciplinary action.”

DFACS officials was notified and took responsibility for the girl, a report says. Daniel remained in jail on Thursday morning without bond.

RCSO: Joe’s Underground Worker Stabs Man in Downtown Augusta
An employee of Joe’s Underground has been charged with repeatedly stabbing a man in downtown Augusta early Friday following an argument that started outside the bar, according to authorities.
Warren Hills, 31, was charged Friday with aggravated assault and weapon possession.
Just after 3 a.m. Friday, an argument started at the front of Joe’s Underground on Broad Street and continued to the SunTrust Bank sidewalk, where Hills allegedly stabbed the victim, whose name has not been released by authorities.
“The victim was transported to AUMC  and is undergoing treatment for his serious injuries,” a press release said.
Authorities say Hills was working at Joe’s Underground. A motive of the stabbing is unknown.
Stay tuned for more…

Joe’s Underground Owner: Stabbing Should Not Reflect on Downtown Safety

The owner of Joe’s Underground is defending his part-time prep cook against charges that he stabbed a man early Friday in downtown Augusta.

Owner Jeremy LaFontaine (pictured at right) says suspect Warren Hills is a good guy who was defending himself when he stabbed a man early Friday on Broad Street. That man, Dezmon Raiford, is being treated at Augusta University Medical Center for six stab wounds.

While the bar owner wasn’t there, he heard from employees and witnessed who told him Hills was hanging out on the sidewalk outside Joe’s Underground when Raiford (pictured at right) approached him. Authorities say the fight escalated and moved outside SunTrust bank, where the stabbing occurred. The victim was stabbed at least six times with a large hunting knife, suffering wounds to his forehead, center chest, left upper chest, two to the left forearm, and one to the lower abdomen.

“The guy walked up on him and tried to pick a fight,” LaFontaine said. “Warren would not do anything to hurt anyone unless he was provoked or he was protecting his friends or family. This is a good man who was put in a precarious situation based on a guy coming up harassing him and his friends and grabbing him.”

LaFontaine is also worried the sheriff’s office press release connecting the stabbing to Joe’s Underground will hurt his business. He said Hills (pictured at right) just happened to be hanging out after the bar closed around 2 a.m. Friday.

And he said Joe’s Underground is a safe place to come.

“The place has been there for 26 years. Safety and security, we are always very conscientious of that,” LaFontaine said. “We never have any issues, but we can’t predict passersby and their state of mind. And if Warren was attacked, that would be the only reason why he would feel the need to defend himself.”

LaFontaine said Hills was not working at Joe’s Underground when this happened. But he occasionally hangs out there on his days off. The owner said he has known Hills for 10 years, calling him “one of the most carefree, loving guys.”

“This is not a reflection of Joe’s or downtown in general,” he said. “I don’t want people saying, ‘Downtown is so unsafe, that is why I don’t go down there.’ Downtown is safe.”

Illegal Immigrant Touches 13-Year-Old Girl During Child’s Party in Martinez!

A children’s birthday party in Martinez ended badly Saturday when a father found an adult in a bedroom with his 13-year-old daughter, authorities said.

The girl was in bed and adults were up late for an after-party outside the home on the 3900 block of Columbia Road.

Ramas Vargas, 45, went inside the home to use the bathroom around 2 a.m. Saturday and didn’t come out right away. The girl’s father went to check on his daughter and use the bathroom, and that’s when he heard the victim scream for help, according to a sheriff’s report.

“He turned on the lights and saw Mr. Ramas Vargas hiding next to the bed,” a sheriff’s report says.

The victim said Vargas had touched her private area.  The girl’s father grabbed his gun and began yelling for the man to leave. Vargas left in the father’s vehicle but returned to the home later.

He told deputies that he couldn’t remember what happened. “In his mind, he possibly thought about toughing (the girl),” a report says.

Vargas was charged with sexual battery against a child under 16. He remained in jail on Monday morning under a $7,600 secured bond.

According to authorities, a hold has been placed on Vargas by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since he is in the country illegally.

In Evans: Journey Community Church Loses Money in Scam

A popular Evans church reported the theft of money through an apparent scam, according to a sheriff’s report.

A business administrator at the church received an email while working from home from someone she thought was the Pastor of Journey Community Church asking her to make wire transfers for the church, according to a sheriff’s report.

While the money initially reported to the sheriff’s office was listed as $20,000, lead pastor Bobby Smith (pictured) told The Jail Report on Tuesday that they are working with their bank to detemine an accurate amount. It is not $20,000, he said.

Pastor Smith said the sheriff’s office and the bank have been working hard to help them determine the amount of the theft and possible suspects.

The money was wired to an out-of-state bank and the bank account was closed down shortly after the transfer, the pastor said.

Sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said these scams are common with thieves often fooling victims with emails that are similar to ones used by the target business.

The church released this statement to its members after The Jail Report informed them that we intended to report the story and warn other churches:

“In an effort to maintain full transparency and openness, we would like to make you aware of a situation that has occurred. We have recently discovered that Journey Community Church has become the victim of financial fraud in relation to payments made towards our building project. This was done by an external party with no relation to the church staff or any contractors related to this project.

We have involved both the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and South State Bank, and we are in full cooperation of an ongoing investigation in relation to the fraud. Thank you for your continued support of our church, and we know God is at work in the midst of this situation. Blessings, Pastor Bobby Smith”

ACSO: North Augusta Father’s Abuse was the Cause of Baby Boy’s Death

A North Augusta man has been charged with causing his infant son’s death through abuse to the baby, authorities said.

Trevonta Langford, 26, was charged Wednesday with homicide by child abuse in the death of 2-month-old Taveon Langford. The suspect is seen here with the child in this Facebook post.

Langford called for help March 31 and met paramedics at the door of his home holding an unresponsive child. After weeks in the hospital, the child died May 13.

“It was determined that the child sustained injuries as a result of physical abuse,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said in a press release.

Langford was arrested Wednesday night at his home on Plank Road in North Augusta.

A sheriff’s report says Langford was the caretaker for the child at the time of his injuries. The baby’s mother, identified as Jamie Burnette, allowed investigators to search her home at 514 Samuels Street, where she and the suspect were living at the time of the child’s injuries.

Trevonta Langford told police on March 31 that the baby was recovering from a fever and had visited the doctor. He said the child started coughing small amounts of mucus March 31 and later stopped breathing, according to a sheriff’s report.

After the child died, the suspect and family members held a balloon release on May 27 with Langford personally posting about the death: “My family and friends that’s been here for me and know my family know how hard this is and will be for a while. I love all my family and I love my sons dearly. R.I.P. Taveon Randell Langford.”

A GoFundMe page set up May 18 by the the child’s aunt, Amanda Burnette, said Taveon passed away “due to unforeseen circumstances” on the day before Mother’s Day.

“Ever since the incident happened, my sister hasn’t left Taveon side at the hospital. Due to her having to stay at the hospital since April 1st, she was unable to work and the bills just kept piling up,” Amanda wrote on the page.

Amanda asked friends for donations so her sister could turn the child’s ashes into jewelry for her and her other children to wear. (Link to page:

Criminal History. Langford has a criminal history of violence. In August 2015, he was drunk when he attacked his pregnant girlfriend. Witnesses said he was “trying to fight everyone” and punched his girlfriend when she tried to calm him down. He also threw her to the ground, taking her cell phone when she tried to call police.

While in a patrol car, Langford kicked the window, dislocating it from the rear passenger side door. He pleaded guilty and Judge Roger M. Young Sr. gave him probation.

Three weeks later, he was drunk again when he was involved in a hit and run after running a red light on Jefferson Davis Highway near midnight. He struck an SUV with three people inside, causing minor injuries to the driver and two passengers inside.

Langford wasn’t even supposed to be driving since his license was suspended, police said. Yet, he was driving and had alcohol in the vehicle. He ran from the accident, but cops captured him shortly afterward. A judge gave him fines in  that case.

Here’s the North Augusta Cab Driver Killed During a Late-Night Robbery

This is Robert Hightower, the North Augusta cab driver who died two weeks ago after suffering a brutal attack during a March 29 robbery in Aiken County.

His death was declared a homicide and three people have been identified as murder suspects. (See full story below.)

Hightower’s death never made headlines. In an apparent investigative decision, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and the Aiken County Coroner never announced the death of the 70-year-old robbery victim. He was quietly buried while investigators sought to identify his killers.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Shunn said Sunday that the victim’s family was aware of their efforts.

“We were working on the leads in order to find the suspects,” he said in an email to The Jail Report. “We have to exhaust that before going to the media.”

An obituary for Hightower was published in the local newspaper. It didn’t mention the cause of death. According to the obit, Hightower died on the morning of May 19 at Augusta University Medical Center. Funeral services were held May 27.

Hightower was owner and operator of Robert’s Cab Service for over 10 years.

Arrested: Harlem Middle Teacher Asks Student for ‘Booty’ Shot

A Harlem Middle School teacher was arrested Friday for allegedly asking a young girl in his class to send him a “booty” shot, authorities said.

Joseph “J.J.” Scalise Jr., 46, of Dearing, was charged wth sexual exploitation of a minor. (Mugshot above; Facebook photo at right.)

The victim, a 14-year-old girl, had taken screenshots of her teacher’s Snapchat message that asked for a nude photo of her buttocks, authorities said. The girl lives with her grandparents, who saw the message and alerted the sheriff’s office.

An interview with Scalise on Friday led to the charges against the history teacher. His phone was also taken and is being searched.

“We are going through his phone to see, among other things, if there are other victims,” sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said.

An arrest warrant spells out exactly what he’s accused of doing:

“Joseph Scalise did send a Snapchat message to [the victim] that said, ‘I’m still wondering how that ‘emoji of a cake’ looks though. Or are you chicken.’ (Cake is slang for booty.)”

Investigators are also talking to other students to see if there are other victims, Maj. Morris said. It’s not clear that the girl ever sent a nude photo.

Weight-Loss Doctor Accused of Forcefully Hugging Employee in Hephzibah

A Hephzibah weight-loss doctor with a history of sexual misconduct allegations by female patients was arrested over the weekend for similar conduct.

This time, though, Dr. Arun Jain is accused of unwelcome touching with a female employee, authorities said. Dr. Jain was charged with simple battery, and a warrant says he caused physical harm to the woman April 27 by “forcefully hugging” her extremely tight and “not letting go after being told to.”

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail on Sunday and later released on bond. The case was investigated by the Hephzibah Police Department.

The alleged crime occurred at Dr. Jain’s office at 2481 Highway 88, which he advertises as a “medical and weight loss practice” providing a wide range of services.

According to media reports, Dr. Jain had his license suspended in 1993 and placed under five years of probation in Georgia after female patients accused him of various forms of sexual misconduct. The allegations in Jefferson County were serious enough that the local district attorney sought a criminal indictment, but witnesses didn’t want to go public.

During his license probation, he returned home to India.  Dr. Jain returned to the country in August 1998 after five years and set up shop in Hephzibah.

As he prepared to open his Hephzibah practice in 1998, Dr. Jain told an Augusta reporter that he had made mistakes and got a “little more friendly with one patient.” He also confessed to some touching.

“There was nothing of any criminal nature, ever,” he said.

Still, Dr. Jain was denied the ability to practice medicine in Pennsylvania and Tennessee because of the allegations, according to media reports.

In a 1998 editorial, The Augusta Chronicle said this: “Local law-enforcement authorities would be well-advised to keep a close eye on Jain’s new practice.”

The doctor told reporters two decades ago that he only wished to get his practice established and be treated as he treats others.

“Just look at me,” he told a Chronicle reporter in 1998. “If I make a mistake, throw me out.”

Pair Shoots Hephzibah Man Five Times & Leaves Body in Shed

A pair of Richmond County friends were charged Monday in the death of a Hephzibah man whose body was found dumped in a shed with five gunshots.

Vaughn Austin Verdi, 23, of Augusta (above left), and William Krepps, 23, of Hephzibah, were both charged with murder and weapon possession in the death of 27-year-old Chad V. Garner.

Garner’s body was discovered Sunday morning inside a shed at 4401 Peach Orchard Road after someone called authorities. (Garner is pictured at right.)

Authorities say the pair shot Garner five times, including twice in the back of the head and once each in the chest, back and tricep. They used a Black High Point 9 mm, which was later found wrapped in a towel inside a garage of Krepps’ family residence.

Both suspects are felons and weren’t even supposed to have a gun. That earned them both an additional charge of weapon possession by a convicted felon.

Verdi has a felony conviction for entering an automobile with the intent to commit theft. Krepps was convicted a few months ago of kidnapping.

Krepps Violent History. Krepps was released from jail in February after two years awaiting trial for a 2014 rape and kidnapping case. He pleaded guilty to the kidnapping charge and prosecutors dropped the rape charge. Judge Sheryl B. Jolly released him with time served and probation.

Krepps (shown here in a Facebook photo) was wearing a mask in 2014 when he secured a woman’s hands with duct tape inside a local house and then choked her into unconsciousness when she woke up.

It was part of a bizarre scheme by 43-year-old Ricky Lee Darby to win the victim’s affections by “saving” the woman. He told police that his friend Krepps took it too far.

According to the victim, she was drugged while having dinner with Darby and woke up in a house with the masked man over her. After being choked, she awoke a second time in bed with Darby, a disabled man who told her she could have sex with him or with the other strangers in the house.

Last year, Darby pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and got a 10-year prison sentence.

Verdi’s History. In November 2014, Verdi was one of two men arrested for entering autos at the Select Auto Sales on Tobacco Road in Augusta at 2 in the morning.

Verdi (shown here in a Facebook photo) was charged with five counts each of entering a vehicle to commit theft and criminal trespass.  The owner of the business called 911 after an alarm was triggered at the back of his property.

He pleaded guilty to every charge in March 2015 and was given probation by Judge Carl C. Brown Jr.
