Student Spits in Teacher’s Water Bottle at Harlem High; Teacher Wants Prosecution

A teacher at Harlem High School wasn’t laughing after a student spit in his water bottle during in-school suspension.

Teacher Stacey Wade (pictured) was supervising an ISS class last Tuesday when he left the classroom briefly to go to the restroom. When he returned, he sat down and drank from his water bottle, according to a sheriff’s report.

A student then told the teacher that a classmate had spit in the water bottle while Wade was out of the room. Wade notified administrators and the juvenile was suspended.

Two days later, though, Wade decided that he wanted to prosecute the juvenile. So he called the sheriff’s office.

A juvenile complaint form was completed, and a copy of the video from the classroom was taken for evidence.

Wade is head of the school’s fine arts department and leads the band.

RCSO: Atlanta Man Was Held Captive in Augusta Home for 4 Days!

An Atlanta man was kidnapped from his home Dec. 12, brought to Augusta and held inside a closet for four days before escaping, according to authorities.

On Friday, authorities arrested 31-year-old Yancey Robertson as one of his kidnappers. He’s being held in the Richmond County jail on charges of aggravated assault and false imprisonment.

A sheriff’s report spells out the ordeal as detailed by the 55-year-old Atlanta man:

On Dec. 12, the victim was taken against his will from his residence in Atlanta by Robertson and three other men. The men locked him in a room in a closet at a home on Sturnidea Drive and would only open the door to give him food.

On Dec. 15, the kidnappers opened the door to give him food, and he began to fight with
them.

“The unknown men and Robertson hit him with pistols resulting in injuries to his head,” a sheriff’s report says. “He got outside the residence and ran with Robertson and the unknown men chasing him.”

At some point, the man stopped chasing the victim and he notified authorities, who responded to Meadowbrook Drive and Sturnidae Drive.

The victim told investigators that the men kidnapped him because they believed he took some drugs from them. There is no word on the other suspects.

Columbia County Man Arrested for Shock-Collar Injuries to Puppy

A Columbia County man has been charged with animal cruelty for using zip ties to tighten a shock collar around a puppy’s neck, authorities said.

The 8-month-old pet suffered injuries so bad from the tightened collar that he may have lost use of his vocal cords. James Lee Long, 59, of Harlem, was charged Friday with cruelty to animals.

Long brought the dog to the Heartsong Animal Clinic on Friday to be neutered, according to a sheriff’s report.

What the veterinarian found was troubling:

  • The dog had a terrible odor and two spots on his neck near the collar that were stained from the draining wounds.
  • The pet’s owner had placed a shock collar on the animal that he made even tighter with zip ties.
  • The collar was so tight that the prongs had punctured into the dogs neck causing two holes and damage to his vocal cords.
  • When the vets shaved the area and cleaned the puncture wounds, the dog did not utter a single sound.
  • The vets believe significant if not permanent damage was done to the dogs vocal cords from the puncture wounds as well as the electric shock from the device.

Columbia County authorities obtained a warrant against Long for cruelty to animals, and animal control took possession of the dog.

The sheriff’s report says Long is a manager at Augusta University. An AU website says Long is the first-shift operations manager for the Medical Center’s Department of Environmental Services, which provides cleaning services to all assigned areas of Augusta University Medical Center and clinics.

R.I.P. Amy Swann, Staff Writer for The Jail Report

Amy Swann defied easy description.

She was passionate, funny, difficult, smart, proud, kind. If you needed help, she was a fierce advocate. If you were a bully, she was your worst enemy.

Amy loved cats and children and those who had been dealt an injustice. She also loved you if you showed an independent and curious mind, a sharp wit, or a loyal heart, all qualities that she possessed in spades and valued in others.

An award-winning reporter and writer, Amy, 53, hailed from the small southeast Georgia town of Claxton, where the family lived with Minnie Kicklighter, Amy’s strong-willed, indomitable grandmother, who could cook like nobody’s business.

After earning her degree in Communications from Georgia Southern College, Amy began her career at the Claxton Enterprise. She quickly became a beloved and respected reporter and columnist for The Augusta Chronicle and the Savannah Morning News. Among her many accomplishments, she was most proud of her Associated Press awards, which included first place for Deadline Reporting in 1987. In the newsroom, she was an editor, teacher and mentor, in fearless pursuit of the truth always and at all costs.

Amy spent the last seven years of her life as a staff writer for The Jail Report, fighting crime with her creative, and sometimes amusing, takes on local crime in the CSRA.

She spoke like an angel, except when she was speaking like the devil, and she wrote with a clear and impassioned vision that inspired countless others.

Amy’s greatest attribute-and her biggest challenge-was her heart. It was as big as all outdoors, but it failed her in the end, from a congenital disease that took her daddy, John Swann, when he was 47. She never stopped missing him.

On the other hand, her mother, Annette Kicklighter Swann, lived to a great age. In Miss Annette’s last years, Amy was a faithful and loving caretaker who never left her mother’s side and met her every need.

Amy gave so much to so many.

She is survived by four cats, an extended family, and more friends than most people make in ten lifetimes. She fought to the end to live life on her own terms, and she pretty much succeeded.

Rest in peace, our Amy. We love you. We will miss you.

A celebration of Amy’s life will be held in the large pavilion at Pendleton King Park, 1600 Troupe Street (across from the intersection of Woodland Avenue and Kissingbower Road) in Augusta, at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 31. – See more at:

Kids Dropped Off at Sex Offender’s House in Hephzibah. Guess What Happened?

A mother dropped off her children at a Hephzibah home where a man and his sex-offender brother lived.

Guess what happened when she picked up her 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son?

Authorities say they both complained that the man’s brother – Samuel Brown – had touched them inappropriately.

It’s not exactly clear if the children’s mother knew of the man’s status as a sex offender. But after hearing what happened, she pursued charges against the man, and the 52-year-old suspect was charged last Monday with two counts of child molestation.

The mother lives in Metter, Ga., and actually dropped the children off with the suspect’s brother, James Brown, of the 2900 block of Algemon Circle in Hephzibah. But Samuel Brown lives there, too, and he’s a sex offender, according to court records.

While staying at the home Dec. 17-18, the boy and girl say they were “touched at different times on the intimate parts of their bodies,” a report says.

The relationship of the Browns to the victims is unclear in the sheriff’s report.

Brown is a sex offender with a 2004 conviction for child molestation, according to online records. He is not listed on the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office website as a registered sex offender.

This is one of many crime stories in this week’s new edition of The Jail Report. Pick up your copy today in local gas stations for $1.50.

Aiken Man Caught Peeping in Woman’s Window; The Victim Says He’s Done It Before!

A career criminal was arrested this week for peeping inside an Aiken woman’s window, authorities said.

Edward Johnson, 42, of Alfred Street, Aiken, was charged with Peeping Tom, stalking, assault & battery, trespassing, giving false info to police and disorderly conduct – gross intoxication.

For more crime news, pick up this week’s edition of The Jail Report, now in stores.

A 29-year-old Aiken woman complained to authorities on Monday night that Johnson was peeking into her windows along North Carolina Avenue in Aiken. She said she opened up her blinds and immediately recognized the man as Johnson.

The victim said she had a trespass notice against Johnson since he has been an ongoing problem for her. She said he stalks her.

On Monday night, the victim “observed Edward looking through her windows.” That scared her because he had made comments before that he would harm her.

“She has told Edward multiple times to leave her alone in which he continues to call her, text her and show up to her residence unannounced,” a sheriff’s report says. “On one incident, she has also caught Edward looking through the window on her while she was in the shower.”

Deputies found Johnson on Pine Drive, where he reeked of alcohol and had slurred speech. Confronted by deputies, he “began to yell and shout, causing residents of the surrounding houses to come to their doors and peak out their windows,” a report says.

The victim said she planned to pursue a restraining order or an order of protection against Johnson.

Criminal background. Johnson has a long history dating back over a decade. He has previous arrests for probation violation, assault & battery, trespassing, gross intoxication, malicious injury to personal property, driving under suspension, criminal domestic violence, fail to comply, forgery, shoplifting, disobeying  a lawful order of police, false information to police, possession of crack cocaine and urinating in public.

RCSO Deputy in Coma After Hitting Tree While Answering Call for Help

A Richmond County deputy is in a medically-induced come after a serious accident Wednesday night while responding to a call for help.

A second deputy was also injured in a separate accident nearby.

According to a press release,  Deputy Reginald Ward (pictured) and Deputy Megan Weddle were responding to a deputy needing assistance call Wednesday night when two of our patrol units were involved in two separate accidents on the 3400 Block of Morgan Road.

Both deputies were traveling in the northbound lane.

“They activated their emergency equipment and had to go into the center turn lane to pass a vehicle,” sheriff’s Sgt. Glen Rahn said in a press release. “Deputy Weddle lost control of her vehicle due to sand in the roadway and struck a tree with the right rear of her vehicle.  The vehicle continued northbound and struck a mailbox post.

“Deputy Ward was behind her negotiating the same curve and also lost control of his vehicle in the sand.  His vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree on the driver’s side of his patrol vehicle.”

Deputy Ward was transported to Augusta University Medical College and is in shock trauma.  He was in a medical induced coma and intubated to control his treatment, Sgt. Rahn said in a 9:30 a.m. Thursday press release.  He is in critical but stable condition at this time.  It does not appear to be life threatening injuries.

Deputy Weddle was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.  She has since been released from the hospital.

Georgia State Patrol was requested and worked the accidents.

Deputy Weddle (shown at right) has been employed with RCSO since August 2015 and Deputy Ward since September 2011.

Again! Augusta Teen Has Sex With Another 14-Year-Old Girl

An Augusta teen had sex with another 14-year-old girl last month while awaiting trial for an October sexual assault on a different girl, according to authorities.

Darreon Curry, 18, is being held in jail on new charges of statutory rape, enticing a child for indecent purposes and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He was arrested Monday.

For more crime news, pick up this week’s new edition of The Jail Report. The new issue includes news on a bizarre murder in Aiken County, a deli owner who bit the arm of a violent robber, and a Grovetown victim scammed out of $1,500 from an online puppy purchase.

In the newest case against Curry, the teen is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl over the holidays. Warrants say that Curry contacted the girl over Facebook, picked her up from her mother’s house and got her high off marijuana at his house before having sex with her.

The girl is from a split family and went to stay with her mom on Dec. 29, but went missing around 11 p.m. Dec. 29 while her mother was sleeping.

“She was picked up by Curry and went to his residence on 3501 Snowden Drive,” a sheriff’s report says.

That’s where the girl says she agreed to have sex with Curry. The girl called her stepmother the next morning and asked the stepparent to pick her up from a convenience store. When she was picked up, the girl was crying and upset.

Her stepmother took her to University Hospital to get checked out. They did not contact authorities about the case until the next day after the girl’s father asked authorities to press charges.

The other case. Curry’s arrest comes just a few months after his Oct. 2 arrest for statutory rape on another 14-year-old girl.

In that case, the girl ran way from home Oct. 1 after asking Curry to pick her up from her home. They ended up back at his home, where she had sex with him. Afterward, she told Curry that she was going to call the police on him, and he left the residence. The rest of the day, the girl said she spent time with Curry’s sister.

The girl told investigators that she was upset that Curry “played her” and she wanted him to get into trouble. He was arrested and those charges are pending.

In Aiken County: Police Chase with Suspect Kills Girl in Passenger Seat

A 16-year-old Aiken County girl was killed Friday night while riding with a wanted suspect who tried to outrun police and crashed into a tree, authorities said.

Ny’Zarria Hitchings of Salley was not wearing a seat belt while riding with 21-year-old Willie Albert Seawright Jr., who has been sought for months for attempted murder.

Seawright was fleeing a Salley police officer around 11:30 p.m. Friday when Seawright lost control of his 1999 Toyota and struck a tree on Hollow Creek Road near John Nunn Highway, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Darryl M. Ables.

Kitchings was pronounced dead on the scene. Seawright was transported to Augusta University Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities have been hunting Seawright for months on warrants for attempted murder, armed robbery and weapon possession. He is accused of shooting one person and robbing another last year in Wagener.

Last fall, a Wagener man was shot in the chest at a home on Coser Street. Police say the bullet ended up hitting the victim in the ribs and bouncing out of his chest. The victim told police that Seawright shot him.

A week after the shooting, a Wagener woman told authorities that Seawright and another suspect robbed her on Center Street and took her purse and vehicle. She said Seawright had a gun and fired the weapon at her as she was running away.

In an unrelated 2015 arrest, Seawright was charge with attempted murder, but prosecutors never indicted him and the case went away last year.

On Saturday, friends of Kitchings were remembering her on Facebook:

  •  Dalvin Daniels: “My condolences got out to the Wise family. I’ve known Ny’Zarria Kitchings since I was in middle school. I’ve spoken I few times to her on the bus. I remember her being very quiet doesn’t say much and smart too. Last time I spoke to her was playing 8 ball and I beat her, lol, but man this is crazy man I just can’t believe it.”
  • Cieara Green: “For some odd reason I can just hear that baby crying out “please stop.” Rest easy Ny’Zarria Kitchings. You will be missed. Lord I’m so sick too my stomach.”

No Place for Kids… Hephzibah Trio Swept Dirty Diapers Under Kitchen Table

A Hephzibah couple and a relative were arrested Saturday after deputies found them raising several children in a disgusting roach-infested mobile home with no heat.

Authorities took custody of the couple’s 2-year-old girl and two 4-year-old girls and turned them over to their grandmother.

Authorities arrested all three adults living in the dirty home: the children’s parents, Preston and Cienna Key, and the children’s aunt, 26-year-old Ashley Key (bottom photo).

All three were jailed on a charge of deprivation of a minor, according to a sheriff’s report. Preston is 28 and Cienna is 25.

The father of Ashley Key’s children called the sheriff’s office Saturday afternoon after picking up his two sons from the mobile home, located at Unit A14 at 4215 James Drive in Hephzibah (pictured above right from Google maps).

William Ellis said he was concerned about the living conditions and was supposed to return the infant and 2 year old on Sunday.

Here is what deputies found when they went inside the foul-smelling trailer:

  • The living room floor was covered with dirt, food, trash, and clothing.
  • The kitchen floor appeared to have been recently swept with dirt, food, trash, and soiled diapers swept under the kitchen table.
  • The kitchen table was covered with trash and food, and the kitchen floor and table had visible live roaches.
  • Cienna and Preston Key’s bedroom floor was covered with clothing with no part of the floor visible.
  • Ashley Key’s bedroom had clothing piled on the floor in the corner.
  • Both bathrooms were dirty with visible dirt on the floors.

Preston Key told deputies that he and his wife and three children had been sleeping in the living room since the mobile home didn’t have a working heater.

“Preston Key stated they have been trying to clean up the residence,” a sheriff’s report says.

A DFACS representative said the children’t couldn’t stay there because of the deplorable conditions. They were turned over to their grandmother.

All three suspects remained in the Richmond County Jail on Monday morning without bond.

Homeless Man Steals $280 Versace Sunglasses from Augusta Mall

He doesn’t have a home, but he has a taste for expensive sunglasses.

James Waites, 29, was charged Sunday with stealing a $280 pair of Versace sunglasses from the Augusta Mall.

According to a sheriff’s report, an employee of Sunglass Hut reported the theft of the sunglasses from the lower-level store. She reviewed the store’s closed-circuit security system and saw Waites taking the glasses.

“Video shows the subject walking into the store, selecting the merchandise, placing it in one of his jean pockets on his right side and exiting the store without paying for the merchandise,” a report says.

Waites, who is listed as homeless on a sheriff’s report, was later found by mall security near entrance five and brought back to the store to be charged with shoplifting. Authorities never found the sunglasses on him, but video showed him hanging with another man who was never located.

(Note: The photo illustration above shows what Waites would look like with Versace sunglasses.)

Shoe Slam – 4 Jailed in Body-Slam Beating of Hephzibah High Freshman

School officers have arrested four people in Friday’s brutal attack on a Hephzibah High freshman for his shoes.

Javarious Bates, 18 (top photo, from left), Quantevius Russ, 18, and Michael Jamel Williams, 17; are all charged with criminal attempted robbery (felony) and battery (misdemeanor).

School officials say the juvenile who recorded the attack was also charged since it appeared from the video that the act was pre-planned. (To see video, click here.)

All three suspects were picked up Tuesday afternoon are being held in the Richmond County Jail. Details of the juvenile’s arrest was not clear.

The suspects are accused of plotting to take a pair of $120 shoes from A.J. Hadden, a skinny 14-year-old freshman who got his black Air Jordans for Christmas.

When A.J.  refused to hand over the shoes in the school parking lot, one of the suspects – believed to be Bates – picked him up and slammed the 115-pound kid  to the hard concrete.

On video, the other two are seen rushing in, kicking and punching the victim. Next, they drag him across the concrete and try to pull his shoes off him but fail.

A.J.’s girlfriend is heard screaming as loud as she can for the attackers to stop.

On Friday, an investigation led only to a disorderly conduct charge against Quantevius Russ, and he was released on a $250 bond on Sunday. That charge has now been upgraded.

The victim (pictured at right, showing a head injury) sustained a ruptured ear drum, multiple bruises on his chest, stomach, arms and legs. He has not returned to school, and his mother says she is considering home-schooling him or moving him to another school in the district.
