2 Die in Aiken County Crash; Speed & Alcohol May Be Factors

Two men died in a single-vehicle crash early Friday in rural Aiken County, including a young father of two boys.

Speed and alcohol maybe contributing factors in the crash that killed 24-year-old Austin Nunn of Wagener (right) and 32-year-olf Michael Polk of Salley (bottom photo), according to Coroner Tim Carlton.

The wreck happened around 12:44 a.m. Friday near Clinton Church Road and Joe Scott Road in Salley.

“Mr. Nunn was the driver of the Chevrolet pick up, when he lost control, left the roadway in a sharp curve, and struck a tree,” the coroner said.

Both men were declared dead on the scene. Toxicology is pending. The crash is being investigated by the S.C. Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Friends and family are already remembering them on Facebook:

  • Kelsey Quattlebaum: My heart is with my family in South Carolina. Austin Nunn, you crazy kid, what are we going to do without you. This boy had a heart of gold, even though it didn’t always seem that way. He would do anything for anyone. Prayers for his two little boys. We love you, Austin.”
  • Robin Rushton: “Rip Austin Nunn, my heart aches soo badly for the family , who are our friends, for his sweet boys who are not going to understand! They sooo loved their daddy! He loved them dearly too!! I saw it first hand! My Brittany’s heart is hurting too! This we know is Gods plan, not ours! We none know when we to will be called home! … Sorry for the loss of the other one involved as well, that I did not know! Prayers as well for his family!”

WANTED: Burke County Killer is Identified in Double Slaying

The man identified as the killer in a Burke County double murder has been identified.

Quame Lamar Collins is being sought in Monday’s double slaying on River Road that took the lives of 64-year-old Eddie Lewis Grubbs and 65-year-old Marshall Jordan Jr.

Authorities say 65-year-old Walter Smith was also struck in the leg in the shooting.

Active warrants are on file with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.  Collins is believed to be armed and dangerous.

No word on a second suspect seen at the home with Collins.

Collins last known address is 3120 Blackmon Court in Hephzibah, GA although he has not been there in several days.  If contact is made with Collins, please contact the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at 706-554-2133 or the GBI at 706-595-2575.

If you see this person or know his whereabouts, call 911.  The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $1,000.00 reward for his whereabouts leading to an arrest.

A source with information on what happened with the murder have this account:

A family member to Grubbs way down the line brought the two guys there a month ago. They called him “Unk,” as in “Uncle.” That is what everyone called him who knew him. Grubbs didn’t know a stranger.

The two guys knocked on the door, Grubb’s long time girlfriend of more than 14 years let them in because she recognized the two guys from coming to visit him.

As soon as they walked in, they asked where “Unk” was and she told them back there in the man cave playing dominos.

“It was nothing out of the ordinary for people to come by and play cards or dominos with the old guys playing,” our source said. “That was their livelihood. But this time, right after they walked back there, his girlfriend just heard shots and ran out the front door and hid in the woods behind the shed until she heard their car leave.”

Once they left, she walked in the house and that is where she found Jordan already dead, Walt on his phone with 911 and they had him on hold, and Grubbs still in his seat. He could still talk, and he said, “I’ve been shot, but I’m okay.”

He lasted 20 minutes before taking his last breath gasping for air. The two guys were in a black Dodge Journey they said which was parked up the driveway.

“They did not have to kill them,” our source says. “They wouldn’t have put up a fight. The boys had the older men’s pants pockets hanging out of their pants because they needed money that bad to kill the elderly and disabled who wouldn’t hurt a soul and would help anyone out. These are sick monsters.”

Josey Mom Joins 2 Daughters in Attacking Boy at High School

A T.W. Josey parent rushed to the high school this week and helped her teenage daughter attack a male classmate who the girl had argued with, authorities said.

The teen’s younger sister also participated in the violent attack, leaving the boy with a broken thumb, scratches to his face and a contusion to his right eye.

An investigation is leading to serious charges against the mother and two daughters. By Friday afternoon, only the girl’s mother, 40-year-old Trumeka Jones, had been officially booked on charges. She is currently in the Richmond County Jail for having a weapon on school property, disorderly conduct and obstructing police.

A pending warrant against her for battery says that she joined two others in hurting the unidentified student by “scratching him, striking him in his right eye and his thumb.”

From the warrant: “The victim sustained scratches to his face, a contusion to his right eye and a broken right thumb.  Said offense occurred at 1701 15th Street in Augusta.”

Authorities say there are pending charges against Jones’ 17-year-old daughter as well as a juvenile daughter for battery.

We’re told that the victim got into an argument with the older girl on Thursday. The 17 year old went home and got her mom and sister and returned to the school. The boy – who was waiting for his mother to get off work at Josey – was then attacked by all three females.

This new case is sure to continue the call for beefed-up security in Richmond County Schools after a serious of violent incidents, including two at Hephzibah High School that were recorded on video and widely distributed.

Spokesman Kaden Jacobs did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking a comment on the Josey attack.

Aiken Fugitive & Missing Girl Found After Standoff in Texas!

A violent Aiken man who disappeared last year with his estranged girlfriend has been captured in Texas after a standoff with authorities, and the 19-year-old girl was found safe.

Julio Vargas, 30, was wearing an Atlanta Braves shirt Friday when he was taken into custody in San Angelo, Texas. He is being held without bond on the Tom Green County Jail. His mugshot is shown here from the sheriff’s office website.

In September, Aiken County authorities launched a public search for 19-year-old Brittany Nichole Winburn (pictured), who was last seen with her estranged boyfriend. Vargas was described as an armed and dangerous criminal with a reward on his head for missing court.

Winburn’s family had reported her missing on Aug. 24, saying she had not been seen for three weeks from her home on Crawford Avenue. Texas authorities were expected to interview her after finding her, but it was not immediately clear whether Winburn was being held by Vargas or was with him willingly.

The Jail Report ran Vargas’ picture on the Wanted page for several weeks after a report by Georgia-Carolina Bail Bonds that the suspect jumped bail on charges of kidnapping, assault & battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

In July, Vargas went on trial in the 2015 attempted rape of a 19-year-old Jackson woman, but he failed to appear in court. The judge issued an active bench warrant on him.

According to a sheriff’s report, the unidentified teenager was found in the roadway needing help on Windsor Road at 7:30 in the morning. The victim told authorities that Vargas pulled a knife on her and threatened to rape her.

Check back here for more details in the coming days…

Dr. Phil to Finally Air Show on Evans Runaway!

Evans teen Calah Waskow has revealed to Dr. Phil why she ran away to Tennessee with her friend’s dad.

Now, a month after Calah flew to Los Angeles with family for the sit-down interview, the show will air this Thursday, Feb. 2, according to the show’s website. The website has this headline:

  •  15-Year-Old Runs Away with Her Friend’s Dad: The Amber Alert, The Search and The Rescue

A summary of the show:

  • “Calah Waskow made national news when the 15-year-old was allegedly abducted by her friend’s 37-year-old father.  Authorities issued an Amber Alert, and Calah was found safe five days later, but many questions remained. What happened to her while she was missing? Did she have a secret relationship with the older man? Calah tells her story in an exclusive interview.”

In the Augusta area, the show airs weekdays at 4 p.m. on WAGT-TV NBC Channel 26.

Background. Jason Arlis Johnson remains in the Columbia County Jail under no bond, charged with aggravated child molestation on the teen. Other charges include enticing a child for indecent purposes, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and an additional count of child molestation.

The North Augusta man made national news last month when he left town with Calah. Authorities say he was wanted for having a lengthy sexual relationship with the girl. An Amber Alert went out over several states when he reportedly took the girl from her Evans home.

Sevierville law enforcement report that they got a call from a man who was following the pair. Johnson and the girl were traveling between gas stations before they were finally stopped at the Russell Stover Candy Store sometime on Dec. 10.

Johnson was taken into custody at the Sevier County Detention Center. Calah’s mother, Nora Waskow, told reporters that she was put on the phone with her daughter about 3:30 pm Saturday, Dec. 10, after being called by an officer from the sheriff’s department.

“She said ‘Momma, I just want to come home,’” Nora said. “She said she saw us on the news and she said she was okay. She said she was all right.”

Calah was taken to a juvenile detention facility as a runaway until a judge signed her into her parents’ care. Within days, Dr. Phil was flying her and her family out to California for the sit-down interview. Since then, a crew with the show has been seen around Columbia County taking video of various locations, including the county jail.

As The Jail Report told you last month, Johnson met Calah through his step-daughter, who is about the same age, according to Columbia County Sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris.

Apparently, the 15-year-old girl was in juvenile court as an unruly juvenile. That is where authorities learned about her sexual relationship with Johnson, which allegedly occurred since July when Calah would sneak out of her Evans home to meet Johnson.

Calah’s older brother, Jayson Wheatley, told a TV station that three or four women had contacted the family on Facebook stating Johnson had abused their children.

About Dr. Phil.  His full name is Phil McGraw, and his show debuted in September 2002. He offers advice in the form of life strategies from his life experience as a clinical and forensic psychologist.

The show, Dr. Phil, is in syndication throughout the country and several other countries. Its 15th season premiered last fall.

An Augusta man with a criminal record has been identified as the driver who mowed down two people in 2014, killing a teenager and seriously injuring another.

On Tuesday, authorities linked 24-year-old Jeffrey Khirell Hardy to the hit-and-run accident that has gone unsolved for nearly three years.

Investigators say he’s the man who struck 13-year-old ZyKeith Harris (pictured at right) and 14-year-old Devontae Sims just after midnight on April 12, 2014, on Gordon Highway. Harris died on the scene but Sims survived his injuries.

Authorities did not say how they solved the case, but they linked Hardy to the crime Tuesday and charges him with homicide by vehicle and hit-and-run. The jail also has him booked on four charges of simple battery – family violence. He’s being held without in the Richmond County Jail.

Criminal history. Hardy is no stranger to jail. He was arrested and convicted last year of stalking and was sentenced to 12 months of probation. He has three convictions of marijuana possession.

And in 2010, Hardy was charged with pointing a firearm at someone, simple battery and deprivation of a minor. Ultimately in that case, he pleaded guilty to lesser charges of reckless conduct and received a -day jail sentence and probation.

As Cops Arrest 2 Teens for Guns, SAHS Basketball Shooter is Still on the Loose;

Aiken authorities have charged two individuals as a result of the ongoing investigation into the shooting incident that occurred outside a basketball game at South Aiken High School last Friday.

They are not the shooter. They are teens with guns at the time of the shooting, police said.

Investigators have arrested 18-year old Dedrick Dashaun Nelson of Beech Island (above right), for Carrying of a Pistol on School Property and Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol and 18-year-old Rakish Breon Jenkins of Aiken (above left) for Carrying of a Pistol on School Property and two counts of Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol.

ADPS Chief Charles Barranco stated, “These arrests are a result of the team work and cooperative efforts between the Aiken Department of Public Safety, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) R.A.G.E. Task Force, the Second Judicial Circuit Solicitors Office, SLED , the Aiken County Public School System, and most importantly, the residents of our Aiken Community.”

Chief Barranco stressed that this investigation is still very active and is ongoing. We are asking anyone with information about this crime to come forward.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), has announced a reward up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the shooting at South Aiken High School, S.C. (See attached ATF News Release).

PREVIOUS DETAILS: Last Friday, South Aiken High School’s basketball team hosted Aiken High School. Following the game, a fight occurred outside of the school building in front of the school. During the fight, an unidentified individual fired several shots. Three individuals were struck by the gunfire.

One victim, a 45-year-old woman, was in front of the school during the fight and suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh. A short time later, Aiken Public Safety was notified of a second gunshot victim who had left the incident and relocated to a nearby fast food restaurant on Whiskey Road. The second victim, a 13-year-old girl was struck in the lower leg. Aiken Public Safety was contacted by Aiken Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room and notified a third victim, a 19-year-old male, had arrived at Aiken Regional Medical Centers for gunshot injuries to the hand and leg.

None of the victims injuries presented appear to be life threatening.

In addition to the South Aiken faculty, coaches, and staff assigned to the game, the event was staffed with six off-duty Aiken Public Safety Officers working security.

The increase in law enforcement presence was due to the expected large crowd. Nearly 1,000 students, spectators, and guests attended the game.

Immediately following the shooting, several officers provided first-aid to injured persons on-the-scene while others, and additional officers who arrived minutes later, searched for the assailant.

Officers and investigators followed numerous leads and suspect descriptions throughout the night as they attempted to locate the suspects involved.

Case Closed! Gun Guy is the South Aiken Basketball Shooter, Police Say

Aiken police connected a local teen to the basketball shootings after last week’s rival basketball game between South Aiken and Aiken high schools.

And it appears gang-related, police say. Some of the victims likely got in the way of his intended target outside the South Aiken game, Lt. Karl Odenthal said.

Rakish Breon Jenkins, 18, is now facing charges of attempted murder and other serious charges. He was already jailed Thursday for weapon possession for having a gun on campus.  But overnight, public safety officers identified him as the shooter who sent three people to the hospital with gunshots.

“We continued to get information on the case, and we did some follow-up interviews, and we had some physical evidence from the scene. With those, we were able to link those things together,” Lt. Odenthal said. “Ultimately, we concluded that he was our shooter.”

In his short life as an adult, Jenkins has been jailed SEVEN times, including a Dec. 21 arrest for receiving stolen goods and a Dec. 6 arrest for burglary grand larceny and safecracking.

Other previous charges include breaking into a motor vehicle and several that were later dismissed and expunged from his record. The Jail Report does not have access to his juvenile record.

Jenkins was expected to attend a 3 p.m. bond hearing Friday. Complete charges include three counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Warrants say that he had a H&K 9mm handgun and discharged it toward three victims, shooting a 13-year-old girl as well as a 45-year-old woman and a 19-year-old male. The adults were identified in warrants as Breon Brown and Patricia Summer.

The case brings to a close a high-profile investigation after the crowded basketball game climaxed with gunfire that sent parents, students and children scrambling for cover.

New Details: A.R. Johnson Teacher Sexually Assaulted Student in Class!

A warrant says a teacher at A.R. Johnson Magnet School fingered a 18-year-old girl in his classroom.

Jayson Reed, 47, surrendered Tuesday to a felony charge of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail.

Here is the warrant:

“Jayson Reed did between the aforementioned date and May 1, 2016 while in his capacity as a teacher did make sexual contact with a female student who is not his spouse. The accused as a teacher did have supervisory  authority over said victim. While employed by the Richmond County Board of Education, more specifically A. R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School, said accused did engage in sexual contact with a female student she being approximately 18 years of age; by inserting his his finger into the victim’s vagina for the purpose of sexual gratification. This offense occurred in a classroom, located in A. R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School, located at 1324 Laney-Walker Blvd., in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia.”

School district spokesman Kaden Jacobs released this statement:

“In January, an accusation was made against Dr. Jayson Reed, a Math teacher at AR Johnson, by the parents of a college-aged, former student. Once Dr. Reed learned of the allegations, he resigned abruptly. In his resignation, he indicated he was leaving due to personal and family obligations. After an investigation, the RCBOE Police Investigator secured a warrant for Dr. Reed’s arrest on the charge of “sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.” The accusations against Dr. Reed are deplorable and we will always take swift and decisive action to protect our students.”

In North Augusta, Elderly Man Answers Knock to Find 3 Robbers on His Porch

Three youth have been charged with a week-old home invasion on an elderly North Augusta man whose only mistake was answering his door.

Desmond Mazzini Cooper, 20, of Trenton (top photo, from left); Jamarus Boyd, 17, of North Augusta, and Cortez Bennett, 18, of North Augusta, were all charged with burglary, kidnapping and weapon possession.

From a North Augusta press release:

On Wednesday night, February 1, 2017 shortly before 11 pm, three unidentified black males forcibly entered the home of 81-year old Robert Dooley in Lynhurst subdivision.  Once inside, the suspects held Dooley at gunpoint and stole various pieces of property (TVs, laptop, jewelry and cash) before they fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.  Mr. Dooley was physically unharmed during the altercation.

Shortly thereafter, an officer responding to the call, found a suspicious vehicle in close proximity to the Dooley home abandoned with several pieces of electronics in and around the car that were quickly confirmed to belong to the victim, Robert Dooley.  Public Safety seized the vehicle and secured it for further processing at Headquarters.

Early the following morning, the owner of the car came to Public Safety Headquarters to report his car stolen.  Detectives with Public Safety already having information to the contrary, were able to get the owner to implicate two potential suspects who had borrowed his car the night before.  After a series of interrogations, it was determined that the car owner and the other two conspired in unison to break into the Dooley home and rob him.

Public Safety’s investigation led to the positive identification of the three males that committed the crimes. All have been arrested and are currently incarcerated at the Aiken County Detention Center.

According to a sheriff’s report, the girl’s mother called the sheriff’s office after finding out that her daughter had performed oral sex on Webb on school property sometime this month. An investigation at the Evans school led to the arrests.

On his Facebook page, Webb has a slogan below his name: “I got the juice.”

He also has these pictures posted.

Evans Teen Missing! Did a Man Pick Her Up?

A 15-year-old Evans girl is missing and may have runaway with an unknown man, authorities said.

Columbia County authorities are asking local media to publicize the girl’s information because “investigators have exhausted all leads.”

Caidance Nicole Butcher, 15, was last seen Sunday night at her home at 4559 Glenwood Drive in Evans.

The teen’s great-grandmother reported her missing on Monday morning, saying she believed the girl had run away. Caidance’s official guardian is her grandfather, but the girl was living with her 76-year-old great-grandmother. The grandfather told authorities that he didn’t know where the girl was.

From a sheriff’s report: “Caidance does not have a cell phone but did take her sisters iPad and has been sending messages on Snapchat and other social media to subjects. One message was sent the previous date at about 11 p.m. asking for a ride.”

If you have any information on her whereabouts, please call the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at 706-541-2800.

Aiken Man Jailed for Vandalism at Graniteville Cemetery

An Aiken man has been connected to vandalism at Graniteville Cemetery that was reported before last Halloween.

Ashtin Dale Ritchie, 23, was charged Thursday morning with trespassing and leaving the scene of an accident.

According to a press release, damage was discovered to several graves on Oct. 30. Also, tire tracks from a vehicle were seen at the cemetery.

“At the start of this investigation, the complainants provided deputies with a video that captured the suspect’s vehicle speeding through the cemetery, near the monument cross,” the sheriff’s press release says. “During the course of the investigations, deputies followed up on several leads, provided by the Graniteville Cemetery Association, which lead them to Ashtin Dale Ritchie of Aiken.”

Ritchie’s been booked into the jail. A 2015 photo from the suspect’s Facebook page shows him posing in a cemetery.
