Theft Arrest: V.P. of Glenn Hills Booster Club

The vice president of the Glenn Hills High School athletic booster club helped herself to $800 of the organizations money when she forged a stolen check last fall, according to authorities.

Cover Issue 803(This is one of many stories in this week’s new edition of The Jail Report, hitting local gas stations right now.)

Tiffani Turner Jackson, 40, of Broad Street, Augusta, was arrested Friday night and charged with forgery 4th degree less than $1,500, theft by taking and speeding, a Richmond County Sheriff’s report said.

The forgery was discovered in February as the president of the club Clarice Johnson and the principal of Glenn Hills Dr. Bobby Williams were looking through the January bank statement. They discovered that check number 1052 had been written to an Alonzo Howard. He endorsed the check and cashed it at the Wells Fargo branch on Walton Way.

JACKSON TIFFANIThe check had the signature of Johnson, but it was forged. After filing a report, Johnson started her own investigation of the matter.

“I wanted to clear my name,” she said. “I didn’t want anyone thinking I had done that.”

She remembered that a man had visited Jackson at least twice at the concession stand. The booster club is in charge of concessions to earn money for the different sports. She knows he was at a basketball game but he may have stopped by during football season.

“I asked (Jackson) who he was,” she said, but she never got an answer.

So she went to Facebook and found that he was a friend of Jackson’s.

According to Sheriff’s Sgt. Monica Belser, no Alonzo Howard has a pending warrant for this case.

Johnson said the only way Jackson could have gotten the check is by stealing it from her pocketbook. She thinks the theft happened while they were both working a game.

“I am careful with the checkbook. I keep it in my purse,” she said.

Fortunately for the booster club, they got the money back.

“The bank repaid the money,” Johnson said.

Ironically, school officials might have been smart to do a background search on Jackson, who was arrested in 2008 on six counts of financial identity fraud. Those charges were dismissed five years later, but an explanation on the reason for dismissal was not immediate clear.

Damione EvansThe King’s Spa rapist has been caught.

Damione Aaron Evans, 39, of College Park, Ga., is in custody at the Columbia County Detention Center. He is charged with rape, aggravated battery, aggravated sodomy, two counts of kidnapping and robbery. There is no bond.

Evans was traced to the Atlanta area using phone records of people who called the spa and his social media account. Photos posted by the suspect matched the surveillance images from the spa.

suspect-in-day-spa-rapeEvans has no prior criminal history. Authorities identified him this week and went to Atlanta on Tuesday to try and locate him, talking to his mother. By the end of the day, Evans surrendered to Fulton County authorities and was transferred to Columbia County on Wednesday, sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris told The Jail Report.

“That’s all it boiled down to: good old-fashioned police work that pointed us in the right direction,” Maj. Morris said.

The crimes occurred at 4 p.m. May 22 at the day spa, located at 337 S. Belair Road in Martinez. The victims said he knocked on a door that leads to the back rooms. When an employee answered, he knocked them to the ground and they lost consciousness. The suspect then went to the kitchen area and stole $300 from a drawer.

Once the suspect got the money, he forced a second employee to perform oral sex on him, and then forced her to have sexual intercourse with him. The suspect then fled in a black vehicle.

A local thief received instant karma Saturday when he stole a car from an Augusta man and wrecked it nearby, leaving him in a wheelchair with painful injuries.

BRIAN NICHOLSONBrian Nicholson, 37, didn’t relax long at the hospital before he was rolled to jail in a wheelchair Sunday and photographed with blood on his face.

The theft happened Saturday night at the Circle K at 3603 Peach Orchard Road. The victim said Nicholson walked up to him at the gas pump and asked him for a ride while he was talking to a friend. The victim denied the request, so the thief announced that he was taking the vehicle.

Nicholson then jumped in the 1998 Ford Explorer and drive away on Peach Orchard Road. The victim got in his friend’s vehicle and they followed Nicholson until they lost him. But Nicholson soon wrecked it in a traffic accident on Molly Pond Road and Gordon Highway. He was taken to the hospital with injuries, and the victim’s vehicle was totaled.

Authorities later booked Nicholson on charges of theft by taking, DUI, reckless driving, driving without a license, failure to maintain lane and no seat belt. That last charge may explain his injuries.

Nicholson remained in the Richmond County Detention Center on Thursday. A sheriffs report lists him as homeless.

Why Was He Free? Warrenville Killer Has Long, Violent History!

The suspect charged with gunning down a Warrenville man during an argument Saturday night is a convicted felon with a long list of violent crimes, gun charges and drug offenses.

Tequan Martrell Holmes, 26, of Aiken, was charged Sunday with murder in the shooting death of 22-year-old Tiquan L. Oakman of Warrenville.

Authorities say Holmes shot the victim about 10 p.m. Saturday at Boucher Court in Warrenville.

Oakman (pictured at right) had “become involved in an argument with several other men, when one of the men pulled a weapon and shot Mr. Oakman,” Coroner Tim Carlton said in a press release. “Oakman died at the scene.”

Authorities identified Holmes as the suspect and released his name and picture to the media Sunday. About 2 p.m., deputies responded with Aiken police to an address on Hamilton Drive and captured the suspect and took him to jail.

Holmes is no stranger to law enforcement and has spent time in the Aiken County Jail and prison many times from the day he became an adult. It may surprise some that he wasn’t currently in prison for his past crimes, which are lengthy:

  • In September 2008, Holmes was a teenager when he was arrested for common law robbery and grand larceny. He got out on bond.
  • In July 2009, while still awaiting trial on the robbery charges, Holmes was accused of a new robbery, this time while armed with a weapon. He was arrested and charged with armed robbery, pointing and presenting a firearm and weapon possession.
  • But six months later, Solicitor Strom Thurmond Jr. dismissed all three 2009 violent crimes and let him plead guilty to the lesser crimes and be sentenced to six years under the Youthful Offender Act.
  • In March 2012, Holmes was now an adult but had not grown up. He was arrested for shoplifting and driving under suspension. He was freed on bond before trial.
  •  A month later, in April 2012, cops saw Holmes driving again and tried to pull him over, but the suspect didn’t want to stop. Once they caught him, officers found the convicted felon with a gun and marijuana, according to online records. But he soon went free.
  • In May 2012, he was charged with intimidation of a witness.  Finally, the court denied him bond. But in July, a judge looked at all of his crimes in 2012 and sentenced the felon to just three years in prison with credit for time served.
  • Holmes didn’t stay in prison for three years, though. Criminal records show he was free again in September 2014 when he was arrested again, this time for malicious injury to personal property. After three weeks in jail, a judge gave him credit for time served and let him go free.
  • By the summer of July 2015, Holmes was charged again with two counts of malicious injury to personal property. A judge gave him 30 days in jail for those repeat offenses.
  • Just a month later, Holmes continued carry around a weapon illegally since he was a felon. This time, the gun possession came during a burglary, which a judge gave him 247 days in jail for.
  • It’s not clear when Holmes was released from prison, but he wasn’t free long before he was carrying again and connected to this week’s murder, authorities say.

Augusta Sailor Punches Girlfriend & She Jumps from Downtown Parking Deck

Augusta Sailor Punches Girlfriend & She Jumps from Downtown Parking Deck

An Augusta woman who was violently assaulted by her military boyfriend while downtown early Saturday jumped from the second-story parking garage to get away from him, authorities said.

“He’s going to kill me!” screamed Jacie Valdez, whose face was covered in blood as she desperately sought help from strangers.

Two witnesses helped the victim while calling 911. An investigation led to the arrest of her live-in boyfriend, Dylan Mackey, who works for the Navy and lives with the victim at Willow Ridge Townhomes in Augusta.

Mackey, 22, is charged with battery, accused of punching Valdez during an argument in the parking garage, causing her to sustain a broken jaw.

Valdez (shown here from her Facebook page) also suffered lacerations to the scalp and liver after jumping down off the parking garage to get away from him, according to authorities. She was taken by ambulance to Augusta University Medical Center and will likely require surgery to repair her broken jaw.

The chaotic scene started about 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the parking garage at 9th and Ellis streets, according to witnesses and deputies.

Witness Damion Allen said he had been hanging out in Augusta and was by the parking garage when he saw the victim tumble to the ground after jumping off the parking garage. There was another man near him who was working on a nearby restaurant.

“She was running to us,” Allen told The Jail Report. “She was screaming, ‘He is going to kill me.’ To be honest, it was like a movie scene. She had blood all over her face. Her eye was swollen. Her head was bashed up.”

Valdez, 22, told responding deputies that she didn’t remember anything but feeling like someone was beating her. She said she went to the bathroom at Blue Sky Kitchen at 990 Broad Street leaving her boyfriend at the bar and she did not remember anything else, a report says.

Allen told deputies that the victim kept mumbling, “Dylan why did you do this to me?” The deputy asked her who had done this to her and she stated “Dylan.”

Deputies found a significant amount of blood on the parking deck and the wall where Valdez went over.

“It could not be determined if she was pushed off the second floor deck or she had jumped,” the deputy said in his report.

The witness said he could tell the victim was injured before she jumped from the parking deck from the amount of blood on the second floor. Allen said it was clear she had been beaten up pretty bad.

“I got three sisters,” he said. “I never seen someone beat up that bad, especially not no woman.”

Mackey, of the 2800 block of Joy Road, remained in the Richmond County Jail on Monday under no bond. A Facebook page for the suspect shows him and the victim in many happy poses. The couple are both involved in the military, with the victim recently completing training with the National Guard.

They both have roots out of state.

Coroner: Augusta Woman Died from Drug Overdose, Not Assaults

An Augusta woman’s suspicious death in April was due to a drug overdose, not the assaults that occurred in the days before her father found her body, Coroner Mark Bowen said Tuesday.

Hannah Newman, 22, of Oakdale Road, had been involved in a few fights before her father found her dead April 17, leading authorities to seek more answers.

But autopsy results concluded the assaults did not cause her death. It was from the toxic effects of taking Aprazolam, the coroner said.

“The cause of death is from a drug overdose complicated by medical issues,” Bowen said.

Bowen said Newman likely took too many Alprazolam pills. “We get a lot of deaths from Alprazolam,” he said.

Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety. It is often abused and a common drug sold on the streets.

Newman’s last week was pretty violent, according to reports obtained by The Jail Report. At 3 a.m. April 16, Newman told deputies that she was jumped on by a group of females. She said she had been punched in the face by a woman earlier in the night at 11th and Ellis streets. She reacted by telling the attacker to come to her house if she wanted to finish it.

Thirty minutes later, three women showed up at her home and she was punched twice in the face by the same woman and then attacked by two others. A witness said one of the attackers threw a water meter cover at Newman.  A deputy noticed that Newman’s right eye was swollen and she had a small laceration below her right eyebrow.  She declined EMS.

Newman was also a suspect in a an incident from the same night she was attacked. According to a report, a woman says Newman shattered the driver-side window of her car by throwing something at it. The car owner said she was watching the group attack on Newman, but Newman got mad and told her to “get out of here.”.

Newman’s father, George Newman, told authorities that he found his daughter unconscious on the floor of her bedroom. He said he last spoke to her on April 16 about 20 hours after the attack.

Aiken Woman Doesn’t Like Hearing Spanish at Mexican Restaurant

A drunk woman became enraged Friday night when she heard waiters and waitresses speaking Spanish at Mi Rancho Mexican Restaurant on Richland Avenue in Aiken.

Wendy Autwell, 42, of the 200 block of Outing Club Road, Aiken, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct – gross intoxication, according to a report from the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

(This is one of many stories in this week’s edition of The Jail Report. Pick up your copy today from local gas stations for $1.50.)

When two officers arrived just before 10 p.m., Autwell was in the passenger seat of a Jeep screaming at people outside. She smelled strongly of tequila and was immediately arrested and handcuffed.

Seems that Autwell began to scratch and bite people from the restaurant and when officers arrived she was having a difficult time standing on her own two feet. She was also cussing loudly at one and all.

The folks she attacked didn’t press charges, but the officers saw enough to take her in for her behavior. At public safey headquarters, she unbuckled her seatbelt and when officers tried to fasten it, she began kicking them. They stopped that by chaining her legs in a hobble, the report said.

Sickening! Augusta Man is Caught Feeding Feces to His Disabled Mom

An Augusta caregiver caught her patient’s 20-year-old son putting feces into the mouth of his disabled mother on Tuesday, authorities said.

It was a disturbing discovery that may have been going on for months.

Quasi Dewayne Kelly, 20, of Melrose Drive, (shown at right from Facebook), was charged Wednesday with exploitation of disabled person and he remains in jail under no bond.

The victim’s husband, Tyrone Jenkins, came home Tuesday afternoon to check on his wife Tonya and found his wife’s caregiver in shock, a sheriff’s report says. She was hysterical.

The caregiver said the man’s son had put feces into his mother’s mouth.

“Tyrone said he does not understand why his son would do such a thing,” the report says. “His son refuses to get a job and wanders the neighborhood day and night.”

The caregiver, Pamela Thomas, told authorities that she was with the victim as she laid on the sofa watching TV in the living room. She said Kelly leaned down, gave his mother a kiss and put something in her mouth that looked like chocolate. The victim started chewing.

Kelly then went to the door and said, “I’ll be back!”

The caregiver started smelling something horrible and went to her patient, quickly realizing that Kelly had put feces in her mouth.

“The caregiver grabbed her latex gloves and started getting it out. She also grabbed a blanket and tried to get it out. She then took the victim next door and the neighbor returned to the house with them to wait for the woman’s son to arrive home.

According to the sheriff’s report, the caregiver takes care of the 45-year-old patient five days a week during work hours. She said she noticed over the last few months when she arrived that Mrs. Jenkins had a “foul odor to her breath,” but she could not figure out what was causing it.

Mrs. Jenkins has a diminished mental state and was diagnosed with dementia in 2011. She often wanders away if she is not observed constantly, the sheriff’s report says.

The caregiver told authorities that she has expressed concern to the woman’s husband about how their son acts around his mother.

“She stated something has seemed a little strange for a few months,” the report says.

Aiken Man Beats 2-Year-Old Girl to Near Death, Warrant Says

An Aiken man is sitting in jail on charges that he beat a 2-year-old girl to near death.

Anthony Tyrone Hurst Jr., 21, was charged  with abuse to inflict great bodily harm upon the child.

According to a warrant, Hurst is a guardian to the child and was watching the girl at the time of the beating. He allegedly struck the toddler across the body so badly that the girl sustained multiple lacerations to her liver, causing a “substantial risk of death due to the impairment of the liver.”

The violent beating to the girl allegedly occurred last Wednesday (June 15) at the suspect’s home, 238 Plymouth Drive in Aiken. She was treated for the serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, authorities say.

Hurst remains in the Aiken County Detention Center on the single charge. He is the same man charged in 2015 with attempted armed robbery, weapon possession and filing a false police report (felony).

Underwear Shoplifter Dares Cop to Tase Him & Gets His Wish

An underwear thief posed for a bloody mugshot Friday after fighting a cop and daring a Richmond County deputy to taser him at Walmart.

Walter Brawner fell on his face when the deputy took him up on the offer and shocked him at the Dean’s Bridge Road store. The 47-year-old suspect didn’t stop after suffering the faceplant, though. He ended up in leg shackles after continuing to resist arrest.

For more crime news, pick up this week’s edition of The Jail Report, sold in local gas stations for $1.50.

A sheriff’s report described what happened at 2 a.m. Friday inside Walmart:

Deputy Dewayne Christy was working a special duty at the big-box store when a witness tipped him off that Brawner was going into an area roped off for waxing.  The deputy watched as the suspect went down the closed aisle with 10 packs of underwear and four packs of T-shirts. When he came out of the aisle, the items were inside a white plastic garbage bag.

Brawner then pushed the buggy out the front door and past the registers without paying for the items. Deputy Christy stopped the man as he was exiting and told him to go to the loss prevention office.

Brawner pushed the buggy into the officer. So Deputy Christy grabbed him as he was trying to go out the doors. Brawner pushed the deputy into the door and tried to run away.

“I advised Brawner that I would tase him and he stated that he did not care and continued to run,” Deputy Christy wrote in his report. “I then tased Brawner and he fell face first onto the pavement. Brawner was then taken into custody.”

An ambulance came to the store to patch up the suspect. Later, while the deputy tried to place Brawner into a patrol vehicle, the suspect again tried to run from officers. He was placed into the patrol vehicle and leg shackles were placed on him before he went to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment and then jail.

Brawner was charged with shoplifting and obstruction of an officer. He was booked into the Richmond County Detention Center.

Augusta Man Arrested for Killing Mom in 2-Vehicle Wreck

An Augusta man was charged Friday with homicide by vehicle after his 58-year-old mother was killed in an accident while riding unrestrained as a passenger in his vehicle.

Allen Ward Jones was driving a Toyota Solara on Friday Afternoon when he pulled out onto Peach Orchard Road into the path of a 2012 Nissan Sentra.

Jones’ mother, Pamela Stewart, was riding in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt when the Sentra struck their vehicle near Barney’s Pharmacy, Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Stewart (pictured at right) was rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:02 p.m. Friday. Her son was arrested Friday and charged with misdemeanor homicide by vehicle and entering or crossing roadway.

No other details on the accident or other possible injuries were immediately available.

Jones, 34, (pictured here in a 2014 mugshot) has a history of traffic offenses in the last decade with multiple tickets for speeding, failing to wear a seat belt, improper lane charge, following too closely and an expired driver’s license.

In 2014, Jones was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and shoplifting and was sentenced to three years of probation and fines.

A Month Later, Aiken Burglar Arrested in Wire Road Death

A repeat offender with a history of burglary was charged Friday in the death of an Aiken carpenter who was found dead inside his Wire Road home a month ago.

Gregory Levi Davis Jr., 21, was charged with burglary and murder in the death of  49-year-old Nicky Cockrell (pictured at right).

Aiken County authorities initially arrested Davis on Friday on a warrant for burglary in connection to the Wire Road case.

“Davis was spotted by investigators in the parking lot of the Richland Ave Walmart, where he was taken into custody,” sheriff’s Sgt. Stephen Shunn said in a press release. “Davis was taken to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office where he was interviewed. …  Investigators executed a search warrant of Davis’ residence after his arrest which their preliminary findings have led to Davis being charged with murder as well.”

Davis was also booked on an additional warrant for burglary of the second-degree, but Sgt. Shunn did not provide details on the second charge. The spokesman also didn’t provide a possible motive in the killing and whether the killing occurred during a routine burglary.

A family member of Cockrell’s found his body inside the victims home at 11:30 a.m. on June 7 and his death was called suspicious. It was later determined to be a homicide after the discovery of bullet fragments in the body, Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Davis is a repeat offender who has racked up serious charges in Aiken and Lexington counties since he became an adult. He’s been arrested in Lexington County for credit card fraud, credit card theft, lottery fraud and multiple counts of burglary. He received a five-year youthful offender sentence with no prison time.

In Aiken County, he’s been charged with drug possession, noise ordinance violation and animal nuisance. More importantly, he was arrested a year ago for possession of a stolen vehicle, but he was released on bond and the case has been lingering in the Aiken County courts for over year without resolution. So he was free on June 7th to continue his crime spree, according to authorities.

Family Reaction. Heather Cockrell, the victim’s daughter, said it was a great feeling and a blessing to know her father’s killer was arrested.

“It’s been heartache on a lot of people,” she told The Jail Report. “He was a good man and a great father and grandfather.  Getting some closure into this has made a big difference even though it won’t bring him back.”

Heather Cockrell said no one in the family knew the suspect or has any idea why he killed her father. “But we will be at every single court date there is to make sure my father gets justice,” she said.

According to his obituary, Cockrell was a cabinet maker and had worked with Cowart Cabinets, North Augusta, SC, Fox Cabinets, Aiken, SC, and Altman Cabinets, North Augusta, SC. Survivors include two sons, Nicholas Chad (Tabatha) Cockrell, Warrenville, Bradley Cockrell, Aiken; one daughter, Heather Cockrell, Aiken; three brothers, Jacky Cockrell, Ricky Cockrell, Jeffery Cockrell all of Edgefield; one sister, Kathy Edgerly, Ward, SC; two grandchildren, Isaiah and Jeremiah Trull; two step grandchildren, Margo Reeves, and Bronx Harris.

RCSO: Augusta Baby’s Injuries are a Result of Dad’s Cruelty

An Augusta man remained in jail Sunday on child cruelty charges after his 2-month-old son showed up at the hospital with suspicious injuries, authorities said.

Johnny Lee Hairston Sr., 22, and fiancée Shynetra Bush brought in their baby Tuesday to Augusta University Medical Center for  “a rug burn to his face,” according to a sheriff’s report.

But doctors told sheriff’s investigators that the injury didn’t look like a rug burn and “more like the baby had ingested some food that was too hot,” a sheriff’s report says.

Hairston (pictured with his son from Facebook) told officers that he was home alone with his son last Tuesday afternoon on Cross Tree Court while the baby’s mother was working. He said he wrapped his son up in a blanket and placed him on a couch. He gave him a bottle and briefly left the room. When he returned, he discovered that his son had rolled off the couch and was laying face first on their carpet, a report says.

The father said the carpet had a bleach stain on it and had been patched with a new section of carpet.

The child’s mother told authorities that Hairston sent her pictures at work of their son’s initial injury and it didn’t seem as bad. Hairston took several more pictures hours later after the baby woke up. Bush said the couple then came to the hospital after Hairston picked her up from work.

An investigation led to Hairston’s arrest on Friday for cruelty to children in the first degree. Shynetra Bush, the child’s mother, was not arrested.

Reached at home Sunday by The Jail Report, Bush said their baby has been released from the hospital and is fine.

“He’s ok. It was an accident,” Bush said. “He fell off the couch. Right now, he’s moving, talking and smiling.”

Asked about why she thinks her fiancé was arrested, she declined to talk further and hung up the phone.

Readers of The Jail Report may recognize the couple from a story two weeks ago in which they were taking the same child to a doctor’s appointment and were attacked. That June 22nd story is below.

5 Teens Attack Mother at Doctor’s Office for ‘Staring’

An Augusta woman and her fiancé were coming out of a doctor’s office with their 2-month-old baby June 15 when five teens violently assaulted the young mother because of how she “was staring at them,” authorities said.

The fiancé, identified as 22-year-old Johnny Hairston, tried to stop the assault at Padiatric Partners, but one of the teen’s mother held him back, shouting “Let them fight” and “They’re all grown-ups.”

“You can’t get into this because you’re a man!” the woman reportedly told him as she ripped Hairston’s shirt to hold him back.

The young mom suffered serious injuries that required a trip to the hospital for several knots to her head, cuts and abrasions. The baby was not harmed.

Hairston was so upset after the assault that he went to his vehicle and got a 9 mm because he wanted to “pistol whip the mother,” a sheriff’s report says. But an armed security guard stopped him from re-entering the building with the weapon. Hairston was charged with carrying a pistol without a valid permit.

Officers charged all five teenagers:

• Two 15 year olds and a 16 years old were charged as a juvenile with simple battery.

• Seairra Beasley, 17, and Chasity Green, 18, were charged as adults with simple battery.

• A warrant was issued for the teen’s mom, Shondra Nicole Freeman, 36, but she was allowed to leave since she was 7 months pregnant and complaining of a medical problem, a report says.

A sheriff’s report tells more of the story of what happened in the second-floor lobby of the doctors office at 1303 D’Antignac Street:

Hairston said they he and his fiancée were leaving the doctor’s office in Suite 2600 of Pediatric Partners, where they had just taken their 2-month-old baby boy. The family was trying to exit, but the five teenagers were physically blocking the doorway.

Hairston said while exiting the office, the young females and his fiancée exchanged nasty words. The five girls all “jumped on” his fiancée, beating her repeatedly, taking her to the floor, and continually kicking and stomping her.

An employee of the Pediatric Partners said she heard one of the teen’s mother (Freeman) talking rudely about the young mother and “the way she was staring at them.” She said Freeman and the teenage girls started the argument with the victim.

A second employee told deputies that she watched as two of the teenagers attacked the victim and the remaining teenagers joined in the attack. The victim fell to the ground and the teens continued to kick and hit and stomp her. The employee then pushed the stroller with the two-month-old son away from that area.

“Two unidentified males exited the elevator and broke up the fight,” a report says.

Video: Gunfire Disrupts Augusta Fireworks Show; Gunman & 2 Bystanders Shot

Richmond County authorities say they have one of the two men in custody who fired their guns in downtown Augusta on Monday night after the Fourth of July fireworks show, injuring one of the gunmen and two innocent bystanders.

Hear the terrifying scream of a woman and the gunfire by clicking here.

According to sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins, the gunfire resulted from a grudge between two people and they fired at each other Monday evening behind the old Fort Discovery. WRDW-TV reports the gunfight took place behind the UNISYS building on the Riverwalk.

The men were not shooting into the crowd, but at each other, Lt. Rollins said.

Yet, the gunfight not only led to one of the gunmen being shot in the face, but two bystanders were hit with superficial injuries and they were taken to the hospital. The gunman who was shot in the face brought himself to the hospital but the other gunman fled on foot, Lt. Rollins said.

A witness who posted the terrifying video of the incident said this on her Facebook page: “It broke my heart to see that woman guard her kids with her body. I was so terrified. I hope she is okay and the kids are safe.”

Full statement from RCSO: “Two subjects pulled firearms after the fireworks show had completed and started shooting at each other. One of them was struck in the face and the other fled. Two citizens recieved superficial wounds and we’re taken to AUMC to be examined. The subject shot in the face is in custody at the hospital and a subject believed to be the second shooter has arrived at the hospital as well. This is all very preliminary and the area has been cleared and secured.”

Comments online from witnesses.

Bryce Smith: “We were there, just about 30-40ft out of that video’s view down the hill when the shots rang out. We hid down in the rocks by the river with our 5 year old who was scared to death. It’s a messed up world we live in.”

Haley Fulwood: “My son went… Had me worried sick… He will never go again.”

WGAC’s Austin Rhodes reports: “I am told investigators believe the two involved are known, low life felons…neither of whom were legally eligible to carry a handgun.
… The one who took the bullet to the face will likely not survive. The other ran away from the scene, but showed up at a hospital for treatment, and he is under police watch right now. Cops were on the scene less than 30 seconds.”

Stay tuned and check back here for developments…

Walmart Flasher Caught in Grovetown!

Columbia County authorities on Tuesday arrested the suspected Walmart flasher who was chased out of the Grovetown store a week ago after exposing himself to customers.

Zachary Jack Hyman, 30, of Grovetown, was charged Tuesday with two counts of public indecency. He is also charged with a similar incident just two hours later outside a doctor’s office near the Walmart.

And authorities say he is the same man listed as a suspect for allegedly exposing himself to Walmart customers in the parking lot earlier this year! But a case could not be made and he was not charged.

He allegedly returned to the same Walmart on June 28. Customers began alerting store officials that a man was walking through the aisles exposing himself. A manager and an employee started following the man and planned to stop him, but the suspect saw them and ran, escaping through the garden area and running into the woods, a report says.

Authorities reviewed the store’s video surveillance and saw that the man was “intentionally exposing his penis to customers in the store.”

A report indicates the man was in the store for two and a half hours before running out at 2:37 p.m.

At 4 p.m., a woman was working in her office nearby on Branch Court when she looked out the window and saw the same suspect, a sheriff’s report says. The suspect had his penis out and was “playing with himself,” the report says.

Authorities brought out their K9 units to search the area. The suspect was spotted but fled the area to a wooded area and escaped capture.

The suspect left behind a hat and a shoe, which authorities took as evidence.

Hyman has a criminal history that includes a conviction for theft. He was charged in March with simple battery in Richmond County, but that charge is pending.

In March 2011, he was arrested on two counts of felony theft in Columbia County, but after lingering in the courts for over three years, the charges were suddenly dropped in 2015.

Sheriff Roundtree on Fireworks Shooting: Evil Happens Everywhere

The Jail Report: What is your reaction to the July 4th shooting in downtown Augusta? What do you say to residents who say they will never come back in future years?

Sheriff Roundtree: “I consider any shooting in our community where innocent people are hurt or seriously injured to be tragic. However, in this case, people need to understand that the only person that was seriously injured was the individual who initiated the altercation. As to what would I say to people who would use this as an excuse to not come downtown, I would say that evil happens everywhere and to use this isolated incident as an excuse to not go anywhere would be like saying that no one should ever attend another Boston Marathon, or they will never visit New York again or that they will never go back into a church or that they will never set foot inside a night club again.”

Hephzibah Man Beats Son with Belt Over ‘Smooshed Cake’

A Hephzibah man beat his 10-year-old son with a belt last week over “smooshed cake,” leaving the boy with a fractured pinkie and bruises all over his body, authorities said.

Vernon Gilchrist Sr., 31, of Heartwood Street, remained in jail Wednesday with cruelty to children in the first degree for the beating. The boy was treated at the hospital.

For more crime news, pick up this week’s edition of The Jail Report, sold in local gas stations for $1.50.

The beating came to light last Wednesday when the boy showed up at Heavenly Creations Daycare and asked a teacher for a bandage for a scrape on his arm.  The teacher then noticed bruises all over his body.

The boy said the wounds were from “a beating he received from his father the evening before,” a sheriff’s report says.

The teacher then notified the child’s grandmother, who shares custody of the child with his father. The boy’s mother only has visitation rights.

The grandmother called the sheriff’s office, and the 10-year-old boy told investigators about the beating:

He said he got in trouble the night before when his little brother told on him for smooshing a cake that belonged to his brother. His father sat on top of him while he removed his belt. His father then began striking him multiple time with the leather and belt buckle of the belt around his chest and arms area. He received bruises to both arms, chest, back, and right calf. His left pinkie finger was swollen to the point he could not fully bend it.

The Richmond County Department of Family and Children Services was contacted and the boy was put in the custody of Gilhrist.

The boy was taken to Augusta University Medical Center., where a doctor said the injuries were consistent with being struck with a belt as well as X-rays showed a small fracture to the pinky finger on his left hand. The physician said that in her medical opinion the injuries to the victim substantiate abuse.
