Warrenville Mom & Boyfriend Charged in Death of 4-Year-Old Boy

A Warrenville woman and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection with last month’s violent death of the woman’s 4-year-old autistic son.

Authorities say Derek Matthew Roberson was actually responsible for the child’s death. But mother Amanda Leigh Bryan was charged with neglect since she failed to protect the boy after realizing he was being abused, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said.

Mason Bryan’s funeral was held last Thursday. An obituary said he was “born with autism which made it difficult for him to communicate.”

On June 22, deputies responded to Aiken Regional Medical Centers after being notified of a possible child abuse. Bryan told deputies she was called to return to her house because her child was unresponsive so she brought him to the hospital for emergency care.

Bryan said her boyfriend was watching the child and told her that he “heard a loud thump and located the victim laying on the floor,” according to a sheriff’s report.

Doctors said the boy (pictured at right) had multiple contusions on his head that were old and new, and he had suffered a fractured skull from blunt force trauma. He was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia on life support, but he was declared brain dead on June 24 and pronounced dead by a doctor there.

Oddly enough, Roberson showed up at the hospital but fled in his car when he saw investigators. They did not chase him at the time because of so many pedestrians in harm’s way, a report says.

From Coroner Tim Carlton: “Upon completion of the autopsy in Newberry SC it was further determined that the child’s injuries were inflicted allegedly by the live in boyfriend and mother. Cause of death was due to severe head trauma and manner of death is homicide.”

State investigators were brought in to assist, leading to this week’s charges.

Roberson, 30, of Aiken, was charged with homicide by child abuse. He’s been in custody since Sunday on unrelated warrants.

Bryan, 29, was arrested Wednesday for unlawful neglect of a child. According to sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah, Bryan is accused of placing her child at an unreasonable risk of harm. She failed to protect the victim after admitting she observed multiple visible injuries consistent with abuse and delayed in seeking medical care, he said. Capt. Abdullah said she was at work while the boy was being abused.

“Any case that is involving a child that has been physically assaulted and there is abuse is extremely tragic. Those are responsible are going to be held accountable,” Capt. Abdullah said. “I think as a community we all hurt when that child is violently taken from us.”

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) also assisted in this investigation.

Augusta Rape Suspect Killed in Mississippi Standoff

An Augusta rape suspect was killed Wednesday in a suicidal standoff with Mississippi officials who were trying to serve a warrant on that rape.

Kenyatta Lee Moorehead, who has a long history of crime in the Augusta area, was found hiding at 7 a.m. Wednesday in a home in Hinds County, Mississippi. Officers with the U.S. Marshals Service were trying to arrest the 36-year-old suspect on Richmond County warrants for a rape and burglary that occurred last week in Augusta on his longtime girlfriend.

Moorehead was found in a closet, but he rushed out with a shotgun and gunfire was exchanged with marshals, according to The Clarion-Ledger. Moorehead then barricaded himself in the home and declared that he “wasn’t coming out alive,” the newspaper reported.

The next series of events are unclear, but the standoff ended about 10:30 a.m. with Moorehead’s death. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the circumstances around the death.

The Augusta rape. Moorehead was being hunted for last week’s violent rape of his longtime girlfriend in Richmond County.

According to a RCSO report, Moorehead had moved out of his girlfriend’s home in April. They had been together for eight years. But Moorehead returned last Monday and kicked in the door of her home while she was sleeping in the bed with the couple’s 7-year-old daughter.

The victim grabbed a gun that was lying on the washing machine. “I will shoot you,” she told Moorehead.

But when she pulled the trigger three times, the gun didn’t fire. Moorehead then  knocked the weapon out of her hands, grabbed the weapon and choked his girlfriend with the other hand. Moorehead demanded oral sex while he was ripping off her clothes. He tried to rape her but stopped after having problems completing the act, a sheriff’s report says.

While Moorehead dressed himself, the victim raced from the home and flagged down a witness to call police. Moorehead was gone when authorities arrived. He turned up in Mississippi this week, where marshals were trying to serve warrants for rape, aggravated sodomy and burglary.

History in Richmond County. Moorehead has a long history of violence in Richmond County dating back to his teenage years. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for two aggravated assault cases in 1996.

Moorehead was free and started up another crime spree here in 2011 when he was arrested for theft by receiving stolen property, felony interference with government property, possession of a firearm by a felon and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He was also charged the same year with simple battery – family violence. He got five years of probation for all his 2011 crimes.

In June 2012, he got 12 months of probation for simple battery – family violence. That could be why a judge gave him a year in prison a year later when he was charged with the more serious offense of battery – family violence.

In June 2015, he was charged with misdemeanor stalking, but that case appears to still be lingering in the court system, according to online court records. It will be closed now that the suspect is dead.

New Mugshot: Augusta Fireworks Shooter Moved From Hospital to Jail

Augusta fireworks shooter Clinton Coleman was moved Friday from the hospital to jail, where he frowned for an updated mugshot that highlights the gunshot wound to his face.

Clinton Lamont Coleman, 30, also appears to have eye injuries, which could have resulted from personal trainer Joshua Austin’s heroic actions to tackle the man and prevent more victims.

Following the fireworks show Monday, Coleman and another man started arguing behind the Unisys building at Seventh Street. Both men then pulled guns and started shooting, causing a panic that led most people to flee the area or duck for cover.

During the gunfight, Coleman was shot in the leg and face. Austin, a personal trainer, saw the gunfight unfold and tackled Coleman, disarming him and holding him until deputies arrived, authorities said.

Bystander Brian Sikes of Grovetown pulled out a concealed weapon and shot at the second gunman, who then fled. The second gunman has not been identified and remains on the run. Sikes was not charged.

Also injured in the shooting: Robert and Mary Odom, a couple from North Augusta. According to a sheriff’s report, “Hillary Odom received a wound to the right side of her face (a piece of a projectile was later recovered from her cheek). Robert Odom received a wound to the left side of his back and the back of his left thigh.”

Coleman (pictured in 2010 from his Facebook page) survived the shooting and has been guarded all week at Augusta University Medical Center before he was transferred Friday. He is charged with aggravated assault,  weapon possession and theft by receiving from another state.

Coleman, who calls himself “Slumboi,” has a criminal record that includes many domestic violence arrests. In April 2012, he was shot after an argument at Cedarwood Apartment Homes on Richmond Hill Road. Witnesses say an argument broke out, and then a gunman opened fire. Coleman, 26 at the time, was shot and taken to the hospital. There are reports he may have been bitter about the shooting and seeking revenge.

Joshua Austin Interview. On The Austin Rhodes Show this week on WGAC, the Augusta man who tackled Coleman recalled why he risked his own life.

The local personal trainer (pictured from Facebook) said he was with his little brother and girlfriend at the fireworks show when the gunfight broke out. Joshua Austin said he heard children screaming and didn’t want to risk anyone else getting hurt. He told his girlfriend to lay down as he rushed toward the shooters.

“I knew I was the only one that was strong enough, per se, to sprint at this guy, and I had a clear line of sight and he turned away from me. So it was the only opportunity to take, so I took it and just charged at him and took him out. He had no idea,” Joshua Austin said.

The shootings have caused some to say they will not return to downtown Augusta. Sheriff Richard Roundtree told local media that “evil happens everywhere” and that the actions of two idiots should not stop people from enjoying the downtown area.

“We have been doing this a long time. We are the second largest city in Georgia. We are going to have incidents,” he said. “The only person seriously injured was the person who initiated the altercation.”

As far as security, the sheriff said they will review their plan for next year’s event and adjust accordingly.

“We may add more plain clothes officers to the event,” he said.

The second shooter in the case remains unidentified. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on his identity to call them at 706-821-1080.

3 Photos You Must See From Saturday’s Augusta March

A peaceful march in Augusta today against police brutality brought hundreds to the downtown area.

But in light of the recent national events, three images taken by photographer Triston Bowie seemed to stand out.

Bowie said he was on the only photographer around when a black protester suddenly left the marchers, approached a white sheriff’s deputy in the road and hugged him.

“I don’t know who he is specifically. I just saw him walk outside of the crowd, away from everybody. I just starting clicking and I started taking photos because I wanted everyone to see that,” said Bowie, a Jamaican native and photographer who moved to Augusta five years ago.

Bowie said he didn’t feel Saturday’s march was anti-police.

“We are not trying to kill cops, because that would not be a solution,” he said.

“We want unity. We are trying to bring back that sense of being there for one another and holding everyone accountable,” Bowie said.

The photographer said in light of the Dallas killings, he felt like people today were reaching out to cops, saying thank you and showing love.

Many marchers expressed a need for change, chanting “no justice, no peace” and showing signs for “Black Lives Matter” and some with “All Lives Matter.”

The march was sparked by the recent cop killings of Alton Sterling and Philander Castile. Speakers demanded an end to acts of police brutality, gathering 300-strong in the Augusta Common and only growing as marchers walked along the street.

Wad of Counterfeits Used at CVS Pharmacy

Authorities need your help to identify a suspect who used 27 counterfeit bills at the CVS Pharmacy in Martinez.

A manager said the man first came into the store last Monday and used a counterfeit $20 bill to buy a drink. Once the cashier accepted the bill, the same man then purchased two Netspend prepaid cards, one for $303.95 and the other for $205.95.

It was only later that the manager was counting the cash and noticed that two $20 bills felt different. She checked it with the counterfeit pen and it showed they were counterfeit. She checked another register and found another bill and then eventually came across 24 more counterfeit bills.

It’s unclear why the cashier who took the suspect’s money didn’t use the counterfeit pen to check the bills.

If you know who this suspect is, please call the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at 706-541-2800.

Aiken Teen Uses Ketchup to Fake Suicide & Scare Parents

An 18-year-old Aiken man who was threatening to kill himself was found in the kitchen of his parents’ home Thursday night, lying on the floor covered with ketchup and holding a knife.

Tyler Redd apparently wanted his parents to think he had tried to commit suicide, an Aiken County Sheriff’s report said.

(This is one of many stories in this week’s edition of The Jail Report, sold in local gas stations for $1.50.)

When deputies arrived at the Redd’s Aiken home, the man’s parents were in the front yard. The two were winded and scared. Redd had attacked both of them, punching his father in the face and hitting his mother before trying to put her in a headlock.

The 57-year-old woman said she believes if he had managed to get his arm around her neck, he would have killed her.

Redd, who was extremely drunk, would not talk to deputies. Instead, he kept yelling, “F*** you dad” and threatening to kill himself. His parents said that their son abuses alcohol and prescription drugs and has some mental issues that they are trying to deal with, the report said.

They had heard him arguing with his girlfriend in his room and his father went to check on them. Redd grabbed a bottle of pills from his closet and tried to swallow some, but his father rushed him. That’s when he began hitting his dad who hit him back to stop him. He then took Redd to the floor to restrain him, the report said.

The teen got loose and ran outside where he went after his mother.

Deputies arrested Redd, who continued to try to hurt himself by banging into the kitchen counter and slamming his head against the cabinets. When he was placed into the patrol car, the officers put a safety helmet on his head to prevent him from hurting himself further.

He was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. He was cleared by the doctor to be taken to jail, the report said.

The Moment: Tattooed Woman Grabs Forgotten Phone in Walmart

Columbia County authorities are trying to identify the tattooed woman who took off with a cell phone that someone left at the Bobby Jones Walmart.

Her face was blocked while exiting the store, but authorities hope you can identify her by looking at the picture of the tattooed man she is with and the top photo of her at the self checkout, where she grabbed the phone.

On July 11, the victim left her phone at a cash register after checking out. Within seconds, the suspect (with a right tattoo half sleeve) picks up the phone and exits the area. The female was wearing a green tank top with an anchor and was with a male wearing a blank tank top and red shorts. The male subject is heavily tattooed on both his right and left arms.

The subjects exited the store with an elderly female.

Gotcha! Evans Teens Grabbed Beer in 4 Circle K Stores & Ran Out!

Columbia County authorities have charged two local teenagers with a series of grab-and-dash beer thefts from Circle K convenience stores.

Hunter Bryan Smith, 18, of Roxbury Drive, Evans, was arrested last Thursday and charged with four counts of shoplifting. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested and charged as a juvenile.

(This is one of many stories in this week’s Jail Report. Pick up your copy in local gas stations, where it is sold for $1.50.)

Authorities say the teens were stealing the beer to party. The reports suggest Smith and his friends just couldn’t get enough beer during a two-day binge on July 1-2, traveling to various Circle K stores to get more and more free beer.

Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Shedd said Smith and the juvenile got the idea from a friend who was visiting from Arizona and suggested beer theft was easy where he came from.

“We do it every time,” the friend reportedly told them. “People don’t care about it, cops don’t care about it. You go in there and take the beer.”

And it was easy for them until the store gave surveillance images to the sheriff’s office, who asked The Jail Report and other media to publish the images. An anonymous tip got them two names and the investigation went from there.

According to sheriff’s reports, all of the thefts involved beer:

• At 2:26 a.m. on July 1, a white male grabbed a 12-pack of beer from the cooler at the Circle K (4473 Columbia Road) in Martinez and walked out without paying.

• At 5:30 p.m. on July 1, four white males walked into the Circle K (4256 Washington Road) in Evans and took a case of Bud Light beer. The suspects all ran out of the store with the beer and fled in a burgundy passenger vehicle.

• At 8:15 p.m. on July 1, two white males entered the Circle K (4649 Washington Road) in Evans and stole a case of beer from a display and left without paying.

• At 4:54 p.m. on July 2, two white males grabbed a 30-pack of Coors Light from the Circle K (4403 Washington Road) in Evans and walked out without paying. They left in a burgundy Honda.

Capt. Shedd said his agency has a very simple message for young people thinking about the same kind of thefts.

“A crime is a crime. A theft is a theft, no matter how big or small,” he said. “There is a very good chance that if you steal something in Columbia County, you are going to be prosecuted for it.”

The other suspects are still being sought.

2 Augusta Rape Suspects Free for Months as DNA Tests Were Delayed!

2 Augusta Rape Suspects Free for Months as DNA Tests Were Delayed!

Two Augusta men were charged with violent rapes this week in unrelated cases, arrests that were delayed for months because of a backlog in DNA testing at Georgia labs.

In one case, a 30-year-old woman accused her trainer of raping her last September after a night of drinking in Augusta. In a second case, a 20-year-old woman accused of an acquaintance of raping her last October after a small party at her home.

Both men were arrested this week after DNA results came back and confirmed the men had sex with the victims, according to sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins.

“Warrants were obtained immediately after the forensic DNA testing came back, and the subjects were arrested on the new charges stemming from 2015,” Lt. Rollins said.  “In each of these cases, all the evidence needed to be fully analyzed before investigators could determine the direction the investigation needed to proceed in.”

In the first case, James Herring is accused of raping a woman after hanging out with her at the Country Club bar on Sept. 11, 2015. The victim told authorities that she was consuming drinks with the 35-year-old man at the Washington Road bar and didn’t remember leaving. She woke up in Herring’s bed.

“When she awoke on September 12, 2015, she was nude from the waist down, and Mr. Herring was on top of her,” a sheriff’s report says.

The woman said Herring was trying to have sex with her, but she pushed him off and found her pants at the end of the bed. The woman said she didn’t remember having sex with Herring but she was in pain and started bleeding later.

The victim told investigators that she would not have consented to having intercourse with Herring because “he is her trainer and she has a boyfriend,” a report says. She went to University Hospital, where a rape kit was performed.

In the second case, Dominique Dunn is accused of raping a woman after a house party on Oct. 24, 2015. She and some friends were drinking and playing cards at her home. She got tired and laid down on the bed and her friend told her at 4 a.m. that everyone was leaving. But she woke up at 8 a.m. with the 25-year-old suspect on top of her and she screamed, a report says.

“She then began to strike Dominique as he ran out the bedroom door, at which time she called her mother,” a report says.

The victim then went to the hospital for a rape kit.

Both suspects were arrested this week and remained Friday in the Richmond County Jail.

Georgia’s backlog of rape kits is part of a national problem. According to endthebacklog.org, Georgia joined the growing list of states embracing rape kit reform. On March 24, a reform bill passed unanimously by the House and then was absorbed by another bill in the Senate where it also passed unanimously.

Georgia’s new legislation sets guidelines for rape kit testing and mandates law enforcement to submit rape kits for testing within 30 days of pickup from the hospital, requires all previously untested rape kits to be submitted for testing by August 2016, and addresses lab accountability by mandating reporting on the number of rape kits in their inventory.

The full size of the rape kit backlog in Georgia is unclear. However, the District Attorney’s Office of New York awarded nearly $2 million to the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to test kits in 2015 and that same year, they completed a partial count which revealed at least 3,108 untested kits.

Tragic End to Augusta Drug Deal – Buyer Pays with His Life

A North Augusta man who was shot during a robbery in Augusta two months ago has died, leading to a new murder charge against the drug dealer who shot him, authorities said.

Jacob Anderson Britt, 19 (pictured), died Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at Emory University Medical Center in Atlanta, Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose Sr. said in a press release.

Britt was shot during a May 31 robbery of Bon Air Apartments in Augusta. According to a sheriff’s report,  24-year-old Brandon Seville Stevenson (shown here in mugshot) robbed and shot Britt on May 31 while the victim was trying to buy drugs from him.

A woman who was with Britt – 29-year-old Brittany Jane Sanders of North Augusta – told police they met the shooter in the back parking lot of Bon Air Apartments. Stevenson allegedly climbed into the back seat of Britt’s vehicle and fired one shot into Britt’s back as he sat in the driver’s seat. Stevenson then robbed them of their cell phones, cash, cigarette and knife, and he fled.

Sanders drove Britt to the hospital. Stevenson was arrested later that day and deputies found him with cocaine, marijuana and meth. At the time, he was charged with two counts of armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine and possession of meth.

Stevenson is now charged with murder after the victim lost his battle at the Atlanta hospital. Britt’s parents were by his side during his fight, according to a Facebook post.

“(He) has been fighting through the injuries for several months,” Marnie Bowles wrote on Facebook. “He put up a brave fight and his parents were there with him through it all. … (His parents) have endured a lot of struggles and pain over the past few months and have remained strong through it all and pray that God gives them the strength to get through the hardest thing that any parent would ever have to do.”

The suspect has a criminal history, including 2009 arrests for burglary, theft by receiving, entering an automobile with the intent to commit a theft and criminal damage in the second degree.
