Friends Remember 13-Year-Old Augusta Boy Killed by Gun

Friends are remembering 13-year-old Michael Caleb McNatt and sharing photos of him after he was accidentally killed Friday while he and some friends were playing with a gun.

“I loved him very much,” said Alicia Watkins, who calls herself Michael’s best friend at school. She also sent us the picture at right.

“He called me his sister. … He would always make jokes and everyone at school would laugh with him. And I loved when he would always make a beat in class.”

Michael, a seventh grader at Pine Hill Middle School, was shot at a home on Dove Roven Road in Augusta. He was rushed to the hospital but died. Sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said the shooting was a result of several young people playing with a gun and the gun going off while someone else was playing with it. No charges have been filed.

A GoFund me page has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses as well as medical bills from the efforts to save his life. The page includes the picture at right. You can get to the page here:

“No family ever expects to lose a child,” the page says. “In our time of grief and sorrow, we could use your help to cover the expense that follows a tragedy like this one.”

The page also tells more about Michael: “He loved swimming and video games like many  young boys. Kind, and always polite, he was the best of us all.  He leaves behind a little Brother Colden Ray, Mother Stacy Cook, Grandparents Donna and Roscoe Cook.”

The grandmother of Emma Bartlett sent this photo at right of Emma and Michael during one of their happy times. She said they were boyfriend and girlfriend for awhile.

“He was a good boy,” the grandmother said. “I am so sad for his family.”

The grandmother also sent the photo above of Michael hugging a friend.

Another message from Antonio Hoffman and Karina Cruz says they knew Michael because they used to play Xbox together.

“He was a really nice kid and we loved talking to Michael,” they said. “He will always be in our prayers and memories.”

RCSO Cops Arrest Woman in Cold-Case Murder from May

RCSO Cops Arrest Woman in Cold-Case Murder from May

Richmond County authorities have made an arrest in a cold case from May.

Shakara Shanese Harden, 28, was arrested Friday on charges of murder and criminal attempted felony in the May 24th killing of 38-year-old Marcus Scott.

Harden is shown above in her mugshot and at right from her Facebook page.

Scott, of Keysville (right photo), was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a wrecked car on that day at 2 in the morning on Old McDuffie Road in Augusta. His vehicle had evidence of bullets on the exterior and he was found slumped over the steering wheel.

According to authorities, the victim’s 2014 Nissan Versa had left the roadway and crashed through two sets of chain-linked fences at 2384 Old McDuffie Road and then hit a vehicle, a 2014 Toyota Corolla, which was parked at 2386 Old McDuffie Road.

RCSO is silent on case. A motive is not known, and it’s unclear whether other arrests are expected. Sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said his agency has no comment on the arrest.

“It is part of an ongoing investigation from an older case,” he said in a statement. “More information to come.”

At the time of his death, the victim’s girlfriend, Shante Hill, told The Jail Report that Scott had been at S Bar that night and may have been followed by someone when he left. Hill said she was told there was a fight there. (She is picture with Scott at right.)

“He didn’t have any enemies or anything,” Shante said. “I think it is something that started at the club. They probably followed him and shot up his car.”

Scott had three daughters and had served in the Army National Guard in the 1990s.

Harden remains in the Richmond County Jail without bond. She has a previous Richmond County arrest from this year for shoplifting.

The suspect’s cousin, Crystal Harden of Keysville, said she was shocked to hear about the arrest. She said they both knew Marcus Scott from living in the same area.

“We know him,” Crystal told The Jail Report on Saturday night. “We know his family and his baby momma and stuff.”

But Crystal has no reason to believe Shakara would want to kill the victim. Her cousin doesn’t even own a gun, she said.

“I am just as lost as you are,” Crystal Harden said. “I don’t know her as being that type of person. That is too scary. I can’t see her being involved in that kind of thing. … Maybe she knows what happened and maybe that is why they called her name.”

Wanted in North Augusta: Man Shoots Girlfriend’s Friend Over Cheating Allegation

North Augusta authorities need your help to find Garrick Campbell for a Sunday morning shooting on Bradleyville Road.

According to a police report, the 25-year-old suspect tried to kill victim Toron Whiteside because he thought the man was sleeping with his girlfriend. Whiteside was shot in the right foot and was expected to survive.

The girlfriend told police she was hanging out with Whiteside at his apartment Sunday morning when beer got spilled on her. She took a shower at the victim’s house to clean up and Campbell arrived and thought her and Whiteside had been having sex in the shower, according to a report

Campbell told his girlfriend that he was leaving in her car to get a gun and shoot them both. She called 911. Meanwhile, the suspect made good on his promise, driving up to the apartment building and shooting toward Whiteside and the girlfriend while they were standing in a breezeway, hitting only Whiteside.

Campbell, who resides in Johnston, later dropped off his girlfriend’s car at her home in North Augusta and was picked up by an unidentified individual.

If you know where Campbell is, please call North Augusta Public Safety at 803-279-2121.

Aiken Child Predator Arrested Again – for Distributing Child Porn!

An Aiken man with a history of sexual assault on children has been arrested for distributing child pornography.

Rickey Allen Gaines, 61, of Little Tepee Lane, was arrested Friday on 10 counts of sexual exploitation of minors in the second degree. He did not manufacture the child pornography or take pictures of children, but he passed along child pornography, authorities said.

Gaines is  registered sex offender living in Aiken after moving from Colorado, where he was convicted in 1996 of sexual assault on a child. (Link here:

His arrest Friday comes from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Investigators with the Attorney General’s Office assisted with the investigation.

Investigators say Gaines was involved in distributing child pornography via a file sharing network. He faces up to 10 years imprisonment on each count, meaning the suspect could be sentenced to 100 years for his crimes.

The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office. In a press release, Attorney General Wilson stressed all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff Challenger Plans to Announce Allegations Against Roundtree & RCSO

Brian McDuffie, the former deputy challenging Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree in the November election, has announced a Saturday press conference to announce allegations against the sheriff.

According to the press release, McDuffie will release information regarding “possible O.C.G.A. violations committed by Sheriff Richard Roundtree of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.”

The press release was not more specific on the allegations and Sheriff Roundtree had no immediate reaction since nothing specific had been alleged.

The press conference is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Evans, the press release said.

McDuffie was fired by Sheriff Roundtree a few years ago after allegations of using excessive force on a juvenile.

In a column in last week’s edition of The Jail Report, McDuffie spelled out some of his plans for the sheriff’s office. We are reprinting the column below.

From Brian McDuffie:

Below, details will be given on the changes that will be made to the RCSO under our command, how they will be implemented and how it will positively effect both the community and the staff of the RCSO. Further details can be obtained by reviewing the website www.McDuffieforSheriff.org. (47)

We will be creating new divisions/units within the RCSO such as, Family Violence Units, Juvenile Task Units, a Corruption Unit, a Citizen’s Oversight Committee and a Community Against Violence program. We will also be re-vamping the Special Operations, Road Patrol, Training and Administration Divisions. These changes will be made under the current operating budget by funds coming available due to the merging and the dissolving of some current positions that become vacated by departing staff. (75)

First to be done will be the recruitment of more personnel and to get the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office fully staffed. We will be implementing a new pay scale that will assist with employee retention and give staff pay increases. Without employee retention being addressed, recruitment will never resolve the personnel turnover at RCSO. (54)

The Family Violence Units, Juvenile Task Force Units and Community Against Violence program will be staffed with current personnel. Further details on these units and program as well as other changes can be viewed by visiting the website listed above. (40)

The Corruption Unit will be comprised of 4 to 5 investigators. Some of this staff will be brought in from outside the current RCSO staff. When conducting specialized investigations, it is best to have a fresh set of eyes and those that have no personal ties to the community so to ensure that the unit does not become biased. Investigations by this unit will be carried out without any political influences whatsoever. Funds will be available to create this unit due to the merging/dissolving positions upon re-structuring. (86)

A Citizen’s Oversight Committee will be created and its board members picked publicly by way of a lottery. The committee will consist of 15 to 20 members and they will be required to attend some training involving basic police operations and administrative functions. This will provide them with the knowledge that will enable them in making informed recommendations. (55)

We will also be re-structuring Special Operations, Road Patrol, Training and the Administration Divisions. Some of Special Operations will be structured into a 4-shift operational method so to increase productivity and communications. This will allow Special Operations to stay on point with its designed purpose. Our administration will be expanding the Training Division which will involve soliciting outside assistance from various industries that will allow the RCSO to build a top-notch training facility.

The Administrative Division will be re-structured and it will be involving the merging and dissolving of positions as mentioned above. These positions are logistic in nature and will not decrease the number of staff in Field Operations. Road Patrol will also be re-structured as well so to become more effective, however, those plans are constantly changing due to the current exodus of personnel. (135)

Augusta Man, 38, Had Sexual Relationship with Girl, 15

A 38-year-old Augusta man was arrested Tuesday for having an ongoing sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, authorities said.

For more crime news, pick up this week’s new edition of The Jail Report, sold in local gas stations for $1.50.

Authorities are also investigating whether the man – William Martin – fired several gunshot outside the victim’s house Monday after the teen broke up with him.

Martin, of Goldfinch Drive, remains in jail on charges of statutory rape and sexual exploitation of children. He has not been charged with the gunfire.

According to a sheriff’s report, Martin made multiple calls to the girl’s cell phone and to her house phone after the teen broke off their relationship. The teen had told Martin that her mother became aware of his age, so she could not see him anymore.

The girl was at home Monday night with her older sister, mother and another woman when someone pulled up in a car and fired a few gunshots. The girl told deputies that the gunfire came an hour after she was at a friend’s house and Martin began texting her and asking her to come outside to talk.

“(She) stated she did not wish to see Mr. Martin because she feared something would happen so she went out the back door of the residence and went home to her residence,” a sheriff’s report says. “Mr. Martin continued to call and text several times trying to make contact.”

Apparently, the gunfire and call to the sheriff’s office is how investigators learned about the sexual relationship between Martin and the juvenile.

Criminal past. Martin’s angry reaction to the break-up matches a pattern of behavior alleged in earlier criminal charges over the last six years:

  • In October 2011, he was under court order not to contact his ex-girlfriend. The ex-girlfriend said Martin approached her while she was with her new boyfriend and threatened to kill her. He also texted nude pictures to her with this message: “I will always have my memories of you.” Martin also told his ex-girlfriend that he posted her nude pictures on the Internet and sent them to her family. He was charged with making harassing phone calls and violating a Family Violence Protective Order.
  • In August 2012, he was charged with aggravated stalking.
  • In July 2011, he was charged with simple battery.
  • In April 2010, he was charged with cocaine possession.

Deputies found the badly-decomposed bodies of a man and woman Thursday afternoon in a Warrenville home.

Sheriff’s officers were doing a well-being check at 38 Jackson Street (pictured) when they made the gruesome discovery, Coroner Tim Carlton said in a press release.

“The bodies have not been positively identified at this time due to significant decomposition,” the coroner said. “They may have been there days to weeks.”

An autopsy is scheduled for Newberry, where the coroner hopes to determine an exact cause and manner of death and identity the pair. The sheriff’s office has not released a statement about their investigation.

Release of their names will be pending notification of the next of kin, the coroner said.

Gerald James Clifford, 28, (pictured) was found shot to death on Feb. 8, 2014. It was a Saturday morning and a deputy was traveling eastbound on Bobby Jones approaching the Mike Padgett Highway exit ramp when he happened upon a 2011 White Chevrolet Silverado, which appeared to be a disabled vehicle.

The deputy pulled up behind the vehicle and began walking towards the driver side, when the deputy realized the driver had sustained a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Thursday, authorities announced these arrests:

  • Marion Isaiah Dagger (from left, top row), age 22 of the 2100 block of Shirley Ave.

Latasha Moore is currently in the custody of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on an unrelated charge and is scheduled to be transferred to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

No motive released. The sheriff’s office provided the public with no information on a possible motive in the slaying, leaving the public to only guess at the cause of deadly violence in the county.

Gotcha! Martinez Hit & Run Driver Had History of DUIs

A Martinez man with a history of DUI arrests was arrested early Friday in the hit & run death of a jogger who was struck and killed earlier in the week.

Christopher Michael Cheek, 38, of Laurel Place, will be charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree, hit & run, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.

Cheek is accused of striking 22-year-old Tim Smith (pictured at right) on Wednesday night as the victim was jogging on Wheeler Road near his home. Authorities say Cheek then fled the scene while Smith lay dying from his injuries. He was pronounced dead at Doctors Hospital.

Cheek is being held in the Aiken County Jail pending extradition to Georgia.

Cheek has two previous DUI arrests in Richmond County as well as two other citations for following too closely and failure to maintain lane. In Aiken County, he has a previous arrest in Aiken County from 2012 on charges of obtaining prescription drugs by fraud, marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia.

Meanwhile, WGAC’s Austin Rhodes is reporting that Cheek was well known in the local bar/hospitality community and was the former manager of “Somewhere in Augusta.” Rhodes said that Cheek reportedly had well known bouts with substance abuse in the past, and suffered substantial injuries in a car accident a few years ago in which his girlfriend was driving.

Even more damning, Rhodes says his sources claim Cheek had already replaced the damaged hood on his truck, and was in the process of securing other replacement parts for the vehicle when he was arrested.

“He was apparently under surveillance last night, and may have been attempting to throw his tail when leaving a downtown Augusta business, by crossing the 13th Street Bridge,” Rhodes said on his Facebook page. “The Columbia County officers who were following him, then radioed NA Public Safety, who were able to pull him over before he was able to pass the top of the hill on on Georgia Avenue.”

According to friends of Smith, he was an avid jogger and had just helped someone over the weekend who was the victim of a hit & run driver.

Friend A.J. LaLumia sent us this note:

“Timm Smith recently separated from the U.S. Navy earlier this year. He was an amazing person and would help anyone out, no questions asked, no mater what he was doing. He had a heart of gold and could always cheer you up. He can’t be replaced. His happiness and attitude was contagious. He will forever be part of my family.”

Another friend sent us this picture of him with this note:

“This was one of the best trips I have ever had with him. A stand-up guy that would do anything for anyone and always had a smile on his face.”

Coroner: Warrenville Man Shot Woman & Then He Died from Overdose

The mystery behind two decomposed bodies in Warrenville on Thursday has been revealed as a murder-overdose.

Authorities say 66-year-old William Howard Boyd (pictured) fatally shot 47-year-old Sheryl B. Stone to death, wrote a note taking responsibility and later died from an overdose at the home on 38 Jackson Street.

From a press release by Coroner Tim Carlton:

“Autopsy revealed that Ms. Stone may have been deceased a week to ten days prior to Mr. Boyd’s death. A note discovered at the scene written by Boyd admitted that he took Ms. Stone’s life. No significant injuries or trauma were discovered on Mr. Boyd at autopsy. Mr. Boyd’s toxicology and microscopic specimens have been taken to SLED for analysis. Further updates will be made available as they come to light.”

Boyd is shown above in a 2006 mugshot after his arrest for assault with intent to kill and firearm possession. Both charges were dismissed before trial for unclear reasons.

Sheriff’s Candidate Claims Roundtree Broke the Law

Sheriff’s Candidate Claims Roundtree Broke the Law

Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree’s opponent in the Nov. 8 election leveled charges Saturday that the incumbent broke the law when he used uniformed deputies, who were on the clock, as part of a campaign ad.

During an afternoon press conference on his father’s property in Evans, challenger Brian McDuffie said he has filed a complaint with the state ethics commission about the violation.

McDuffie also alleged that the participation of some of the deputies was not voluntary.

“The information we have received indicates some of the deputies were ordered to attend,” he said.

Because the deputies were considered to be working, they were paid. Those who were off duty were to be given comp time at a later date.

What this means, McDuffie said, is that the taxpayers were footing the bill for the officers in Roundtree’s commercial.

Sheriff Roundtree was unavailable Saturday and could not be reach for comment.

There are those questioning the timing of the press conference just a few weeks out from the election. But McDuffie said the issue of the commercial came up earlier this fall, but he did not see the advertisement until Oct. 2.

McDuffie is president of a local non-profit, Law Enforcement Against Corruption, which investigates allegegations of malfeasance.

He said there are other concerns about the sheriff’s office and a brief is being written, which will be sent to the governor and the state attorney general.

McDuffie, who is a former employee of the RCSO,  was fired from the department in August 2013 following the investigation of an excessive force complaint. He is running as a Republican in a county dominated by Democrats.

Some local residents responded to the allegations on our Facebook page, with one labeling McDuffie’s allegations as “amateur hour mess.”

“This was not a press conference! It was a backyard rant based on bitterness,” said Biz Payne.

Said J.T. King: “He should be talking about what he’s gonna do to make the sheriff’s office better if he’s elected, not mudslinging and such.”

From Belinda Dunaway: “I commend your effort here. But I’m still trying to figure out what why you think you would do a better job. The only way I’d change my vote for Roundtree is if Scott Peebles ran again. And that is never going to happen.”

However, Diana Bennett Duva criticized the current sheriff:
“It is really rather sad. Roundtree was completely unqualified and should not have been allowed to run for office. It is a sad state of affairs when voters care nothing about right and wrong. One day it will be an absolute embarrassment for the County, but nothing will be done.”

Why Does Sheriff Dobey Have a Mugshot? The Edgefield County Sheriff Won’t Say!

In this week’s edition of The Jail Report, disturbing questions are raised about the military record of Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey and a possible arrest that may have ended the lawman’s military career.

In the print edition of the paper, we share what the U.S. Department of Defense has to say about Sheriff Dobey’s military record in the U.S. Marines. Those records directly contradict previous claims that the sheriff served his country for two years. In fact, they detail questions about whether he may have been discharged after a year because of a possible arrest in 1970.

What does Sheriff Dobey have to say about the documents from the federal government?

Nothing.

The sheriff refuses to answer any questions, despite a campaign that is asking voters to re-elect him in a few weeks to another term.

Read all the details in this week’s edition, in stores now.

Also in this week’s paper: Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree doesn’t hold back in his response to challenger Brian McDuffie’s claims that he broke the law while filming a campaign commercial and used sworn deputies who were on the job.

Plus, we have details from the suicide note of a Warrenville man who killed his girlfriend and died from an overdose.

Son of Georgia Rep. Lee Anderson is Arrested for DUI

Benjamin Lee Anderson, the son of Georgia Rep. Lee Anderson, was arrested Thursday for DUI in Columbia County.

The arrest comes as an unwelcome distraction for his father, who is about to face the voters in his upcoming race against Deomcrat Brenda Jordan for the state Senate District 24 seat.

According to authorities, 32-year-old Benjamin Anderson was stopped Thursday morning on Louisville Road at Columbia Road in Appling. He was found to be under the influence and charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane and failure to stop at a stop sign. Bond was set at $4,300. At 9 p.m. Thursday, he remained in custody, according to the jail website.

The Jail Report reached out to Rep. Anderson, and he released this statement:

“There’s no excuse for my son’s dangerous and reckless behavior. We raised Ben better than that. He deserves the harsh punishment coming his way.”

Rep. Anderson (right) is running to replace longtime Sen. Bill Jackson, a Republican.  While serving in the Georgia House, Rep. Anderson served on agriculture, transportation and natural resources committees.

Oddly enough, he was appointed by the governor to the state Board of Corrections, serving two years.

When Cops Get a DUI –– Richmond County vs. Columbia County

What should happen to a deputy who gets arrested by his own department for DUI?

It depends on where they are working.

Richmond County authorities have kept their deputies on the force after taking disciplinary action while Columbia County officials have wasted no time in terminating a deputy’s employment.

In this week’s edition of The Jail Report, we take a look at the most recent arrest of a Richmond County deputy stopped for DUI. If the past is any indication, he will not lose his job.

Pick up a copy of this week’s issue of The Jail Report for full details on the arrest of Justin Poston and a look back at what happened to Eugene Danner Jr. after his arrest by RCSO in 2015.

Also, we tell you results of an Edgefield County survey on the upcoming sheriff’s race between Sheriff Adell Dobey and challenger Michael Raffield.

And, we’ve got full details on the Grovetown High School student arrested for bringing a knife on campus and telling classmates he was a gang member who had killed people.

In Aiken County, we have stories on the DUI arrest of a USC Aiken student, and a domestic violence case out of Jackson.

Day Care Teacher Pours Bleach in Co-Worker’s Soda in Augusta

An Augusta day care teacher has been arrested for aggravated assault after she was caught on camera pouring bleach into a co-worker’s soda bottle, according to authorities.

Sharon Sexion, 47, is being held at the Richmond County Jail under a $27,700 bond on the felony charge.

Sexion was allegedly caught on videotape at Cathy’s Day Care & Learning Center committing the offense in August. The camera shows her opening up the refrigerator and pouring a substance from a white cup into a 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew used by infant teacher Juanita Quattlebaum, according to a sheriff’s report.

Quattlebaum told authorities that she had been drinking from the 2-liter bottle for two days while working at the day care on Lumpkin Road. Apparently, the bleach was added to the already-opened bottle on Aug. 9 after the victim had consumed some.

The victim said she opened the bottle again that day to pour some into a cup and noticed the horrible smell. Quattlebaum asked around the day care to see if it was a prank, and no one – including Sexion – confessed to doing it as a joke. So she called the cops.

The Jail Report reached Quattlebaum on Monday morning to ask about the incident, which she called “bizarre and random.”

“I still don’t have any reasoning,” she said. “If I were to drink it, it would have really messed me up. … I think she thought she would get away with it. We have security cameras all over the building, so I don’t know why she thought that.”

Quattlebaum said the suspect probably knew investigators were on to her and quit a a few days after authorities came to the day care. The investigation took some time, but the arrest finally came last Wednesday.

“It drives me crazy thinking about what I could have done (to upset her),” the victim said.

While she never drank the contaminated liquid, she said she now remains paranoid about drinking from opened bottles or ones that have been unattended.

“And the smell of bleach pisses me off now,” Quattlebaum said. “It is so bizarre and random.”

With Nothing to Wear to Halloween Party, Woman Tries Stealing from Mall

A Grovetown woman tried walking out of J.C. Penney with an entire outfit – including jewelry – before she was stopped over the weekend, authorities said.

Kimberly Ann Coppinger, 36, of Gingko Lane, was charged Saturday with theft by shoplifting in the crime.

“Coppinger states that she was invited to a party and did not have anything to wear and knows it was the wrong thing to do,” a sheriff’s report says.

A loss prevention officer told deputies that Coppinger was seen going to the jewelry department and selecting a necklace and a watch, placing them in her purse and walking out without paying.

The loss prevention officer escorted the woman to a security office, where she admitted to taking the items and also presented three other clothing items that she had taken: a dress, a shirt and a vest. She had hidden them in her purse, too, a report says.
