Aiken Police: No Body Cavity Search was Conducted

Aiken police search 4Aiken public safety officials on Tuesday denied conducting a body cavity search of a male passenger or exposing body parts of the female driver to the public during a controversial 2014 traffic stop.

That traffic stop by Officer Chris Medlin was captured on video and exploded across the Internet in the last week following its release.

In response to recent media coverage and inquiries regarding events of October 2, 2014, the Aiken Department of Public Safety released this statement Tuesday morning with three points:

1.    The traffic stop was a legal stop conducted as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation based on information received from a documented, reliable informant.
2.     At no time during the traffic stop, was a body cavity search conducted, nor were any private body parts exposed to the public as alleged.
3.     Based on our review the comment attributed to our officer, which was quoted in the complaint as “You gonna pay for this one boy,” was not made by our officer, but instead was made by the vehicle occupant.
“We remain dedicated to maintaining the highest level of integrity, service, and accountability to those we serve,” the statement said in conclusion.
balkoIn a story by The Washington Post, reporter Radley Balko (pictured) said he had been working on an investigative series about police abuse in South Carolina and stumbled across the “horrifying incident” in Aiken. He references a federal lawsuit filed by attorney Robert Phillips where black occupants Lakeya Hicks and Elijah Pontoon are pulled over by white cops for having a  temporary tag, which was not illegal.
The lawsuit alleges the traffic stop was illegal and that the officers conducted an “anal probe” of Pontoon and exposed Hicks’s breasts on the side of the road in a populated area.
The reporter points out that Pontoon has a lengthy criminal history that includes drug charges, but says “his record appears to be clean since 2006, save for one arrest for failure to comply.”
With no contraband and no traffic violation to justify the stop in the first place, the officer concluded the stop by giving Hicks a “courtesy warning,” Balko reports.
The City of Aiken is defending the lawsuit in court. Merlin still works for the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

A Pennsylvania man attending practice rounds for the Masters Tournament in Augusta was arrested Monday after sneaking onto the sand traps, marking the only arrest this week so far, authorities said.

David Fitzgerald Key, 47, was charged with disorderly conduct for being intoxicated in public, said Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay.

(This is oCover Issue 745e of many stories in this week’s edition of The Jail Report, sold in local gas stations for $1.50.)

“He decided to try to get in one of the sand traps on the course and he was intoxicated,” Capt. Gay said. “He got in the sand trap and we arrested him for being drunk and disorderly shortly afterward.”

The patron went into a restricted area and had to go under a rope line to get to it, the captain said.

The man had a license registered in Tennessee, but he is from Pennsylvania. He was arrested and booked into the Richmond County Jail before being released.

Key has been the only arrest associated with the tournament. There were reports of a few scalpers inching their way toward the course, but officers were trying to be courteous and explain state law to them.

Augusta National officials were confiscating some tickets administratively after finding that some were exchanging tickets within the restricted areas, Capt. Gay said.

“They are trying to sell tickets in the parking lot. So we interrupt them before they sell the tickets,” he said. “Traditionally, we have always tried to be courteous on Monday, and by Tuesday afternoon It gets worse. … If a violation is there and we felt like they have been warned previously, we will act accordingly.”

Exposed – North Augusta Mom’s Secret Life of Prostitution

A young mother’s secret life of prostitution from her home in North Augusta was exposed this week with her arrest by Aiken County authorKristen Perry backpageities.

Kristen Perry is facing 21 counts of prostitution for a series of “escort” ads she allegedly posted on Backpage.com offering sex with strangers for between $100-$200, depending on how much time they wanted. Some ads included pictures of a female’s vaginal area and her breasts with a phone number that belonged to Perry, according to warrants obtained by The Jail Report.

“Ready to meet gentlemen, must be white or donations will be higher,” the 26-year-old suspect allegedly wrote in the ads. She asked for $100 for a quick visit, $150 for a half hour and $200 for an hour.

In one backpage.com ad from Jan. 19, she wrote, “Kinky fun, I’m in North Augusta…private residence,” and “ready now.” The ad is accompanied by a photo of buttocks in a thong. “Fetish welcome,” said yet another ad with an email listed as “cumslut2069@gmail.com”

The ads were traced to her home on Maple Drive using the ad’s Internet address and a warrant for Comcast records. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on her home this week and she was arrested Wednesday. She has since been released on bond and told someone on Facebook that it’s “a different story than it appears.”

A Facebook page for the suspect shows her posing with two small children and a man, and she lists her relationship status as “Engaged.”

The crackdown comes in the middle of Masters Week, when the “Escorts” page of Augusta’s Backpage.com section features several naked women offering Masters Week specials.

“Pretty Young Thick Thang, In Town for Masters Week, 22,” said the headline of one ad, which included several pictures of a woman’s breasts and buttocks dresses in bikinis and thongs.

In Perry’s case, she often told potential customers that she was looking for serious people only and “not law enforcement.”

“Couples welcome,” one ad said, according to one of 21 warrants filed against her. In that ad from Dec. 28, she allegedly included a nude photo of a female’s front torso visibly displaying her breast and a belly piercing. All of the ads documented by law enforcement were from the months of December 2015 and January 2016.

Kristen Perry, 26, of North Augusta, Prostitution

According to the warrants, she allegedly placed the ads “for the purpose of procuring or soliciting for the purpose of prostitution.”

Pregnant Wife of Ryan Paquette: He’s Abused Me for 10 Years

Roid-gate figure Ryan Paquette was arrested Sunday for a hair-dragging attack on his pregnant wife in front of their four children in Appling, an attack that led his wife to confess that she’d been abused for almost 10 years, according to Columbia County authorities.

Ryan PaquettePaquette, 35, of Winfield Road, Appling, was arrested for battery and two counts of child cruelty.

The arrest is certain to cause him problems after a judge gave him probation in January for threats related to a steroids investigation. In that case, Paquette was accused of threatening to rape a Richmond County officer’s wife and bash in his head for investigating his brother for steroids. A judge gave Paquette two years of probation. (His brother Brandon was connected to an investigation into illegal steroid use by RCSO deputies.)

This new arrest comes after Paquette’s wife called 911 on Saturday and asked for information for a “friend” about Safe Homes of Augusta. She was given the information and told that if the “friend” filed a report, the sheriff’s office would investigate any domestic violence.

On Sunday morning, Paquette’s wife called 911 again, crying. She said her husband had been mentally and physically abusive to her for almost 10 years. She said he violently assaulted her on Friday simply because she got the wrong kind of bread for his sub sandwich. He wanted wheat, but she got white.

During a sit-down interview with deputies at an Evans substation, the victim spelled out what she says happened on Friday night:

She went to Publix to get groceries and sub sandwiches for dinner. She got Paquette a sub sandwich on white bread. When she arrived home, Paquette became infuriated because the sub was on white bread and not wheat. Paquette began calling her names of a sexual nature as well as fat and worthless because his sandwich was wrong.

The victim walked to the back bedroom where all three of her juvenile sons were laying down watching television. She sat down on the bottom bunk with one of her 4 year olds. Paquette suddenly came down the hallway yelling, grabbed her by her hair and proceeded to drag her from the bedroom to the kitchen.

When she was dragged, the victim was thrown on top of the 4 year old. This caused her knee to hit the child in the chest, bruising the child.

Once in the kitchen, Paquette allegedly pinned his wife up against the front of the refrigerator, grabbed her by the neck, choked her, and slammed her head into the refrigerator. She fell to the ground and when she got back up she told Paquette, “If you touch me again I am calling the police”. The victim walked towards the bathroom and Paquette followed her. Paquette demanded that she go fold clothes and he took her phone from her. He also took the cell phone from the 4 year old, so no one could call 911.

The victim started folding clothes on the couch. Paquette came towards her again and head butted her and punched her in the front of her head. She was able to make it to the recliner next to the couch at which point Paquette began punching her multiple times in the back, shoulders, arms, and stomach.

The victim told authorities that she is pregnant and was terrified that he was going to kill their unborn baby. So she began yelling at him to stop and stated “you’re going to kill me!” Paquette continued slinging her by her hair from left to right and stated “I’m trying.”

Paquette forcefully took his wife’s wedding band off of her ring finger causing swelling and bruising to her left ring finger. After screaming profanities at his wife for a few more minutes, Paquette went to bed. The victim then went to lay down with her daughter. She stayed in the bed until her husband left the following morning.

The victim had several knots just inside the hair line on the front of her forehead and side of her head. She also had multiple bruises on her arms, side, legs, and shoulders, a sheriff’s report says. She also complained of neck pain and she was concerned for her pregnancy. She went to a hospital for an evaluation.

The four children – ages 4-8 – told investigators that they saw Paquette pull the victim’s hair. A daughter gave a written statement in which she detailed Paquette dragging the victim down the hallway. She also heard her mom screaming for him to stop and heard her say “you’re going to kill me.”

One of the children “was crying and was visibly shaking while I was speaking with her about the events,” an officer’s report says. “She further stated her dad is also very mean towards her.”

At 12:40 pm Sunday, an investigator called Paquette and attempted to meet with him concerning this case. The suspect refused any comment and said he would have his attorney call the officer. The officer called Paquette a second time and informed him that he needed to turn himself in for battery and cruelty to children. Eventually, Paquette was taken into custody and was put in the Columbia County Jail under $4,800 secure bond. Since his arrest Sunday night, the District Attorney’s Office has filed a motion to revoke his probation so he now has a hold until court with no bond, authorities said.

A sheriff’s report lists Paquette’s full name as Cameron Ryan Paquette and describes him as 5-feet, 8-inches tall, 230 pounds with a large and muscular build. In a January news story, Scott Connell, Paquette’s attorney, said his client can be “hot-headed at times.”

An Augusta man set himself on fire and ran into a home occupied by a woman, and charges could be filed against him once he is released from the hospital, authorities said.

VALAKOSSteven Valakos, 37, had reportedly been involved in a domestic issue with the occupant at 1206 Eisenhower Drive and was not supposed to be living there anymore, sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said.

At 8:07 a.m. Friday, the Richmond County Fire Department joined deputies in responding to a fire alarm call. They soon discovered that Valakos had “set himself on fire and ran into the house,” Lt. Rollins said.

“He is currently being treated for his injuries and the fire has been extinguished,” the lieutenant said.

WRDW-TV is reporting that the woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

1206 Eisenhower Dr.Investigators are continuing the investigation at this time and charges may be pending.

Lt. Rollins said he was not told by investigators what the relationship of Valakos was to the woman inside, whether it was his wife, ex-girlfriend or what. A Facebook page for Valakos shows him posing several times with the same woman and a photo from June 2015 saying he had been in a relationship with the woman for 10 months.

The Jail Report featured Valakos in a November 2015 issue when he was arrested for criminal trespassing at a different address in Augusta. That mugshot is shown here.

Columbia County authorities have identified a suspect and possible motive in Friday’s slayings of five people in Appling.

No names have been released of the victims. One died at a local hospital. The others were pronounced at the scene, authorities said.

Maj. Morris said if they are unable to find the suspect quickly, they will release his name to the public.

The man who killed five members of his wife’s family Friday in Appling was found dead in his garage of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Wayne Anthony Hawes, 50, was discovered just after midnight inside his garage at  3311 Rosemont Road, where the man had also tried and failed to set the house on fire, sheriff’s Capt. Andy Shedd said.

Authorities say it appears Hawes was angry after his wife planned to divorce him. She survived his furious reaction, but her family did not.

Among those dead:

  • Roosevelt Burns, 75, of McCladdie Drive
  • Rheba Mae Dent, 85, of Johnson Drive
  • Kelia Clark, 31, of Johnson Drive
  • Lizzy Williams, 59, of Washington Road
  • Shelly Williams, 62, of Washington Road

Here is how the evening unfolded:

At 7:54 pm Friday, the sheriff’s office responded to 3162 Johnson Drive in reference to a shooting. That is where Burns, Dent and Clark had been shot and killed.

As officers were investigating the Johnson Drive crime scene, they received a call at 8:32 p.m. Friday to another shooting at 5581 Washington Road in Appling, where the two Williams victims were found dead. Both died as a result of gunshot wounds.

“We believe the two shootings were related based on witness accounts,” Capt. Shedd said.

Officers conducted surveillance on the suspect’s home early in the investigation. Shortly after midnight Saturday, they decided to enter the home.

“We found the suspect deceased due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Also inside was evidence that the suspect attempted to set fire to the house unsuccessfully,” Capt. Shedd said. “We believe some of the victims were related to the suspect’s wife.”

According to criminal records for Columbia County, Hawes has a long record from 1989-2002 with arrests for aggravated assault, sale of cocaine, simple battery, shoplifting, obstruction, DUI, fleeing from police, reckless driving, and driving without a license.

Hawes victimsMembers of the victim’s extended family were already mourning the death on Facebook and posting photos of those who were killed.

The Appling deaths are reported to be the largest mass killing in the county’s history.

An Augusta man who set himself on fire Friday morning and ran into a home occupied by a woman died overnight at the hospital, according to Coroner Mark Bowen.

Valakos was rushed to the hospital but died.

WRDW-TV is reporting that the woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

1206 Eisenhower Dr.Lt.

Caitlin Hawes, the 19-year-old daughter of Appling killer Wayne Anthony Hawes, has shared a family photo with The Jail Report that shows her parents and sister during happier times.

Wayne Hawes family photo“Wayne was my dad,” Caitlin wrote to The Jail Report. “You can share this pic of us just to let everyone know who we are and that we’re OK.”

The photo shows Wayne Hawes with his oldest daughter Lauren at left, his wife Angela Dent in the middle and Caitlin Hawes at the far right.  It was taken a few years ago at Friendship Baptist Church in Appling during a funeral for their uncle.

Authorities say Wayne Hawes snapped Friday and went on a shooting rampage in reaction to his wife’s decision to leave him, killing Roosevelt Burns, 75, Rheba Mae Dent, 85, and Trequila Clark, 31, on Johnson Drive in Appling. He later went to a few blocks down and killed Lizzy Williams, 59, and Shelly Williams, 62, on Washington Road.

Rheba Mae Dent was Caitlin’s grandmother and her cousin was Clark. Roosevelt Burns was her grandmother’s brother. The Williams family were close church friends and neighbors of the Hawes family.

Wayne Hawes was found dead in the garage of his home at 3311 Rosemont Road, killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Wife Angela Dent and the couple’s daughters survived by hiding at a neighbor’s house, authorities said.

The Jail Report interviewed Caitlin and will have details of that interview in the coming days, including the threats Wayne Hawes made in the weeks before the killing spree and his bizarre behavior over the years.

The Appling deaths are reported to be the largest mass killing in the county’s history.
