GBI officials say an off-duty deputy had gone to his estranged wife’s residence Friday afternoon to pick up two children before he got into an argument with the man he fatally shot.

Allen Crispin from Facebook“While at the residence Joshua Lee and Allen Crispin became involved in a verbal altercation which briefly became physical,” a GBI press release says. “Witnesses to the incident revealed that Lee produced a pistol and pointed it toward Crispin. Crispin was also armed with a pistol and fired two rounds, striking Lee twice.”

The deceased man has been identified as 26-year-old Joshua Franklin Lee, who was shot twice, Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose Sr. said.

The shooting occurred at 937 Horseshoe Road. Because it involved a deputy, Sheriff Richard Roundtree immediately requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation.

Crispin (pictured here from a Facebook photo) has been placed on administrative leave with pay until the GBI investigation is complete, which is standard policy at the sheriff’s office.

“The investigation is ongoing,” the GBI press release says.

Josh LeeLee (pictured at right) has previous addresses in Wagener, S.C., and Appling, Ga., and he also has a November 2015 arrest for disorderly conduct in Jackson, S.C.

Lee’s Facebook indicates he worked for a tree service and previously attended Grovetown High School.

Augusta Man Takes Video Up a Lady’s Dress – Again!

An Augusta man who served prison time for video-taping up women’s dresses at local businesses has returned to his old tricks, according to authorities.

Charles David Tremblay, 39, served four years in prison for using his cell phone to take video up the skirts of female shoppers at the Augusta Mall and at the local Target in 2008. He was released from prison in April 2013.

On Friday, he was arrested again for returning to the Augusta Mall and videotaping up the dress of a young Macy’s employee with his cell phone, according to a sheriff’s report. The incident occurred Dec. 23, but warrants weren’t obtained until Friday after a warrant hearing. That’s where the victim appeared to tell a judge what happened, and the judge issued a warrant for unlawful eavesdropping or surveillance.

Tremblay was arrested and held at the Richmond County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

The 21-year-old woman said she was speaking to a customer when Tremblay tried to record under the employee’s dress. Another employee saw him and told the victim.

“Tremblay immediately stood up and began fumbling with his phone as if he was trying to frantically delete something,” a sheriff’s report says.

A loss prevention officer got Tremblay’s information before he left Macy’s. The store surveillance video shows Tremblay walking toward the young woman, setting down his bags and sliding his phone underneath the woman’s dress on the floor while acting as if he is tying his shoes. The video clearly shows the cell phone is lit up and powered on.

Charles David Tremblay

LONG HISTORY OF PEEPING. Prison records show that Tremblay was sentenced to five years each for three Peeping Tom incidents in Augusta in 2008. Judge Michael N. Annis allowed the man to serve the sentences concurrently, or at the same time, so the pervert got out early after serving four years. He is pictured here in his prison mugshot.

In 2008, his arrest made big news in the Augusta area. He was employed at Wild Wings off Washington Road, where he was arrested as he arrived at an evening shift, according to media reports.

He was the man identified through surveillance who went into the Target along Robert C. Daniel Jr. Parkway. Authorities said he was caught on video cameras in the store using his cell phone to take pictures or video under the skirts of unsuspecting female shoppers. He was also investigated in November 2007 at the Augusta Mall for placing his phone under the skirt of an unsuspecting female.

At the time, Tremblay was making headlines across the state of Georgia. Two residents at the Polo Club Apartment Complex in Athens spotted him hiding in the bushes back in 2006.

In 2008, a sheriff’s lieutenant named Scott Peebles told local media that Tremblay had obvious impulse issues. “(He) cannot control his own behavior or refuses to do it so we’re going to accommodate him in a place to stay until can he can do that,” Peebles said at the time.

One of Hester Jackson’s killers took a plea deal this week in exchange for a life sentence in the 2012 fatal shooting of the SRS security guard, authorities said.
Demarkeo Lockhart
The plea deal for Demarkeo Lockhart (right) came as the Augusta District Attorney’s Office was preparing to start a trial in the case. Co-defendant Ojore Adams (pictured at bottom) is facing trial at a future date for his role. The plea deal brought new details in the Hephzibah killing.  Prosecutors say the two defendants were burglarizing Jackson’s house Dec. 8, 2012, when he returned home from his job at Wackenhut Services and surprised them.

The men were at a neighbor’s house and saw the victim leave his home on Willis Foreman Road.  Prosecutors say the men likely thought Jackson Hester Jackson(pictured) would be gone awhile and went inside. They were still there when he returned, shortly after picking up his dinner.   They shot him and went back to the house across the street, according to prosecutors.

The case was cold for more than two years but was broken by an informant in Richmond County’s custody.   The informant was able to give details of evidence which had not been shared with the public.

Ojore Adams“This is a good result,” District Attorney Ashley Wright told The Jail Report. “I commend the RCSO for devoting so much time and effort into putting together a strong case where it appeared that the trail had gone cold.  ADA Robert Homlar was prepared to start trial and hopefully provided some comfort to the victim’s family by obtaining a plea and avoiding any prolonged appellate process.”

Jackson was veteran of the Air Force who had worked at Wackenhut for 29 years. The victim had wed Brenda Jackson about six months before his death and was in the process of moving when he was killed.

Augusta Man, 49, Knocks Up Girlfriend’s Daughter, 15

An Augusta man knocked up his girlfriend’s 15-year-old daughter and got caught when she showed up at GRU hospital last week with a pregnant belly, according to authorities.

Keena Vinell Crawford, 49, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of child molestation and one count of statutory rape. The last charge usually suggests that the girl was not raped but was not legally able to consent because of her age.

The investigation began Friday afternoon when a deputy went to GRU Hospital to take a report of rape from a 15-year-old girl and her mother. The hospital staff said the alleged rape occurred October 2015. That was all they knew, a sheriff’s report says.

“I spoke to the mother of the child outside of the room,” the deputy said in his report. “(She) said that she received a text message from her daughter on (Friday) around 8:30 p.m. She told her mother that she believed that she was pregnant. She also told her mother that she was raped by her mother’s ex-boyfriend Keena Crawford.”

Turns out the girl is 16 weeks pregnant. She told her mother that the baby’s father was the person her mother used to date – Crawford. (It’s not clear whether the suspect was dating the mother at the time that the girl got pregnant or after they broke up.)

The deputy notified investigators about the claim, and Rape Crisis officials were at the hospital to look into the case, according to a sheriff’s report.

The report does not mention why the girl was at the hospital or her condition. But an investigation led to Crawford’s arrest on Sunday when was booked into the Richmond County Jail.

EXCLUSIVE: Convicts to Face S.C. Trial for Burning Man Alive in Edgefield

Two men tied to a horrific homicide of an Evans man in 2002 are sitting in the Edgefield County Jail on murder charges for allegedly burning the victim alive in the trunk of his car.

Shannon Patton Daniel NewtonShannon Patton, 31 (left), and Daniel Newton, 29 (right), were extradited from their Georgia prison to South Carolina last week after serving over a decade for the initial burglary and kidnapping of Jack Murray in Evans. Georgia officials say they agreed to provide the men after receiving a court production order.

Edgefield County Solicitor Donnie Myers is making good on threats to charge them in the murder, which took place in South Carolina. The men were brought to Edgefield last Wednesday and each charged with murder and kidnapping, according to jail records.

Here’s the case history: Murray’s body was found in the trunk of a burning car on Nov. 18, 2002 in Edgefield County. He had been bound, beaten and burned alive.

A day later, teens Marcus McCord and Randy Conrad confessed to Columbia County investigators that they had broke into the man’s home along with Newton and Patton. Patton was the former stepson of the 63-year-old victim (pictured here)Jack Abbott Murray.

The pair said Patton and Newton told them they drove to Sumter National Forest and set the car on fire on Deep Step Road.

In 2002, McCord and Conrad were sentenced to 10 years in prison for their role. Later, Newton and Patton pleaded guilty in Columbia County Superior Court to kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and theft.

The Murray family have told local media that they always blamed South Carolina officials for not prosecuting the pair for murder and feared they would be paroled early.

“I just don’t think they should ever see the light of day again,” the victim’s son, Michael Murray, told local media last year.

Stay tuned for updates…

Dead: Elderly Man Who Shot Nephew in University Hospital Room

An 89-year-old Aiken County man accused of fatally shooting his nephew in 2012 in a University Hospital patient room has died.

WGAC’s Austin Rhodes is reporting that Charles Gorrell died Friday morning in a Newberry nursing home. The Jail Report confirmed the death occurred at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry, S.C.

Charles Gorrell’s bad health prevented him from ever standing trial in the shooting death of 59-year-old Tim Douglas Grooms of Lincolnton.

History of case: The elderly suspect’s wife was being treated on the seventh floor at University Hospital in Augusta for an undisclosed condition in October 2012 when a disagreement started between Mr. Gorrell and Grooms, who was the nephew of Gorrell’s wife.

At the time, authorities said a long-standing dispute over family matters apparently existed between Gorrell and Grooms.

“Gorrell stood by to be taken into custody immediately after the incident,” a 2012 press release said. “University Hospital Security arrived on scene nearly immediately and were responsible for detaining Gorrell and securing the area.  Their quick response is to be credited with containing the incident and keeping others from being injured.”

Four months ago, WRDW-TV reported that the doctor treating Gorrell – Dr. Michael Bernardo – gave the elderly suspect less than a year to live.

“He’s got severe systolic failure probably the worst case which would be class four, which means he gets short breath with just sitting at rest,” Bernardo told the TV station.

The doctor said Gorrell had a long list of health issues that included congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and COPD. The doctor said a simple trip to Augusta for a court date could land him in the hospital.

The victim’s family had demanded justice in the case, saying that Gorrell was allowed to live years without being held responsible.

“It’s as if my brother’s life didnt mean anything,” the victim’s brother, Terry Grooms, said in court last year.

An Augusta woman who worked for the Georgia Department of Driver Services was arrested Friday for creating a fake ID and passing on personal information in exchange for purses and clothes, authorities said.

Gladys Williams, 52, of 2329 Cadden Road Augusta, was charged Friday with bribery, violation of oath by public officer, computer invasion of privacy, computer forgery and computer theft. She had worked for DDS for 17 years, but she was fired after her arrest, an agency spokeswoman said.

According to the warrants, Williams is a DDS employee who is accused of:

  • Providing a false driver’s license and creating a new identity for someone
  • Passing on other people’s personal info from the DDS computer to the same person
  • Receiving “items of value” (clothing and purses) by that person for the services that Williams provided.

DDS spokeswoman Susan Sports said her agency has certified investigators who “take these matters seriously,” but the spokeswoman refused to comment on how much personal information was taken in this case and whether her agency was alerting those people who were affected.

“If you want to put a no comment on that subject, that’s fine,” she said. “We have an investigative services division. They are responsible for any type of cases, like identity fraud or any type of criminal activity within the agency. So our investigators would be conducting a thorough investigation. Due to not wanting to jeopardize the integrity of the case, we can’t say anything more than that.”

Williams was arrested Friday, booked into the Richmond County Jail and later released on bond.

The man facing the death penalty in the 2014 slaying outside a Martinez church became violent in jail Monday and threatened to kill an officer, authorities said.

Daniel Nelson RobinsonDaniel Nelson Robinson, 23, is being held for the murder of Bill DaVitte in August 2014 outside Marvin United Methodist Church.

On Thursday morning, Columbia County jailers went into Robinson’s cell to transport him to another cell for a disciplinary infraction. But Robinson spit on Deputy Jailer Samuel Feffer’s face and uniform, a report says. The inmate then made reference to another incident in which Deputy Feffer was cut by another inmate.

“N***a, you better go get your spray. I’m going to finish what Cotton started,” Robinson reportedly said. “When I get done with you, n***a, you gonna have more than a scratch on your face. … You know, if I get the death penalty, I’m going to kill you. F*** it, I’m going to kill you anyway.”

Later, as six deputies were putting Robinson in a restraint chair because of his violent behavior, the inmate took an aggressive stance. So Deputy Paul Vance II used pepper spray on him for two or three seconds. Robinson reacted by swinging his fists at the officer and hitting him in the forehead about his left eye, a report says.

Deputies were finally able to restrain the murder suspect and apply the handcuffs before placing him in the restraint chair. Robinson was checked by medial staff and decontaminated in a jail shower.  Deputy Vance suffered a bruise on his forehead, a report says.

Now, Robinson is facing two counts of obstruction of an officer.

He’s a violent criminal with a long history in Florida including seven arrests.

In the Martinez case, he’s been indicted on nine felony counts including murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, hijacking a motor vehicle, armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Robinson, who was 21 at the time, was captured in Jacksonville after leading authorities on a high-speed chase along I-95.

Augusta Woman Dies Minutes After Being Raped

A poverty-stricken Augusta woman died minutes after being raped in a 15th Street boarding house last week, but her death was not connected to the sexual assault, authorities said.

Marcus Dewayne Booker, 45, of Augusta, has been charged with felony rape of the 42-year-old victim. According to warrants, the woman was raped at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 1.

The coroner’s officer pronounced her dead at 9:05 a.m. Feb. 1.

Coroner Mark Bowen said the death was initially considered suspicious but the autopsy revealed no signs of trauma that would have killed her. He is awaiting toxicology to find out the cause of death. A rape kit was also conducted on the woman’s body.

“We don’t believe she was murdered,” Bowen said. “It could be a natural death or an accidental death or an overdose. They haven’t given us anything to lead us to believe it was a homicide.”

According to authorities, the victim consented to sex with a man and then became unconscious inside the boarding house on the 1700 block of 15th Street. That’s when Booker allegedly took advantage and had sex with her. Authorities say she subsequently died.

Boarding house resident Kevin Askew told authorities that he discovered her body and contacted landlord Wesley Cummings, who he called 911. Crime scene investigators initially called it a suspicious death in a sheriff’s report.

An investigation led to Booker’s arrest the next day for felony rape.  He remains in the Richmond County Detention Center under no bond. Booker has a long history of shoplifting and obstruction charges.

The victim has previously been identified as homeless, authorities said.

A Martinez man rear-ended a van Monday morning while masturbating in his car, authorities said.

Donald Johnson ArrestDonald Marvin Johnson, a registered sex offender with a history of public masturbation, struck the back of an Augusta man’s 1992 Chevrolet Astro Van. The van was stopped for a red light at Bobby Jones Expressway and Washington Road, according to a sheriff’s report.

A witness told investigators that she saw Johnson swerving and driving recklessly before the rear-end collision. She said he almost hit her vehicle a few times.

“The last time she looked over at Mr. Johnson, he had his penis exposed outside of his pants and was physically masturbating,” a sheriff’s report says.

Wreck illustrationThe wreck occurred at 10:37 a.m. Monday when Johnson’s 2006 Saturn Ion struck the rear of Michael Adams’ van. The sheriff’s report indicated Johnson was found at fault for “following too closely” and explains in the narrative that he was “physically distracted” when he struck the van.

A passenger in that van complained of injuries but was treated at the scene. Johnson, 63, was not hurt.

Authorities arrested Johnson on the scene for public indecency and he remained in the county jail Thursday under a $10,100 cash bond. He also has a bond of $1,100 for following too closely.

Johnson is registered as a sex offender with an address of 105 Springlakes Drive in Martinez. He was previously convicted of public indecency in 2008 and just completed all requirements of the First Offender Act in December 2015.

According to the 2008 report, a local nurse was stopped at a traffic light along Washington Road when she looked over and saw a man masturbating in his car. She got his tag number, which led authorities to Johnson’s residence on Springlakes Drive.

Johnson initially denied the allegation, but he was arrested a year later and pled guilty under the First Time Offender Act. He was required to register as a sex offender.

An Augusta man was captured Thursday morning after a 12-hour standoff with authorities that escalated when the suspect shot 20 rounds at deputies. No one was hurt.

HARRELL, Donnie WadeAt 10 a.m. Thursday, suspect Donnie Wade Harrell was found hiding in the attic crawl space of his home at 606 Wrights Avenue, sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said.

(He’s the same man who threw his elderly mother through the screen door of his home last year and yelled “you made them take my guns.” Details below.)

Thursday’s capture ended a long night that started at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when deputies responded to a domestic disturbance. Deputies were told that Harrell had shot once at his girlfriend, who was unhurt and ran to a neighbor’s home for safety.

“Deputies arrived at the residence as Harrell was barricading himself into the residence,” Lt. Rollins said. “All avenues of a peaceful surrender were attempted and at approximately 3:30 a.m. while deputies were outside the residence, Harrell began firing approximately 20 rounds at the deputies.”

Deputies tried tear gas to force the man out, but that didn’t work. By 10 a.m., the sheriff’s office had joined forces with the Tactical Unit from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office to enter the home. They found Harrell in the attic and took him into custody after a brief struggle.

Harrell is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, terroristic threats and acts and an outstanding warrant.

Violent History. Harrell served 30 days in jail last year for throwing his elderly mother out the front door at the same residence. That sentence came at the same time as two convictions for two separate cases of simple battery.

PhotoAccording to a 2015 report, Harrell pushed his 73-year-old mother through the front screen door at 606 Wrights Ave.

A neighbor heard a loud bang and saw the victim crying and Harrell cursing and screaming “you made them take my guns,” the report says.

The neighbor called police and ran over to help the woman and stop Harrell from assaulting her more. The victim suffered a bloody right elbow and could not stand. She was taken to University Hospital. Deputies saw a screen door that was bent at the bottom.

A judge gave Harrell a month in jail as well as probation and fines.

In this week’s case, authorities say an incident report is not available and they have no additional details on the domestic violence case.
