An Augusta man’s been charged with murder in Thursday’s shooting death of a supervisor of Teleperformance, but authorities are still seeking more suspects.

victimMarquise Terrell Yarbary, 24 (shown above), has been in jail since early Friday morning on a magistrate’s court bench warrant, but authorities have now connected him to the slaying of 29-year-old Randy Ramos (pictured at right). The victim was short once in the chest in the call center parking lot, which is near Augusta Mall.

Investigators say they developed information Sunday leading to the murder charge.

“Sheriff’s Office investigators are continuing the investigation and working to identify additional suspects involved in the incident,” sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said in a press release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Investigative Division at 706-821-1020 during business hours or Dispatch 706-821-1080 after hours.  All calls can be held confidentially.

In a 2012 case, he was accused of holding a handgun to a young teenager and threatening to kill “whoever called the police on him” about a robbery.

Judges have given him probation in every case, according to online records.

Yarbary is being held without bond at the Richmond County Jail.

Two dumb crooks who broke into the Dollar General store in Aiken were caught after returning to the store for more, authorities said.

JUSTIN TYLER MORSEJustin Morse, 24 (with goatee), and Kevin Walton, 22 (long hair), were caught early Monday for burglary after entering two businesses on York Street NW.

The pair had apparently broken into a vacant business and made a hole in a shared wall near the cosmetics section of the Dollar General store to get inside, where they stole cigarettes and other items, police say.

Kevin Lawrence WaltonWhile investigating the crime, officers heard a noise and captured Morse and Walton, who matched the description of the burglars seen on the video surveillance camera, authorities say.

“Both suspects were found to have items matching what had been reported stolen during the burglary in their possession,” a press release says. “Investigators believe the suspects were not aware of the police presence in front of the business, and were returning to the incident location for another round of theft.”

Both subjects are currently being held in the Aiken County Detention Center.

An Augusta man was arrested Friday for a 2014 crime that left a 5-year-old girl with cigarette burns on her back and bruises on her eyes.

Cover Issue 729(This is one story in this week’s Jail Report, which is sold in local stores.)

Jamez Hubbard, 22, was charged with cruelty to children in the first degree, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s report.

The child’s mother left the girl in the care of a cousin on July 25, 2014, so she could work the third shift at Walmart. The cousin lives at the mother’s house on Windsor Spring Road house in Hephzibah and had her boyfriend, Hubbard, there with her, the report said.

The mother returned just after 7 a.m. but she went straight to bed and did not see the injuries until she got up at 3 p.m. Her little girl had burn marks on her lower back that appeared to be from cigarettes. A deputy also saw that she had bruises on her eyes, the report said.

The mother said that when she confronted Hubbard he began stuttering and said “It ain’t like you say.” The woman ordered Hubbard to get out. He did leave his iPhone behind, which was collected by a sheriff’s investigator, the report said.

Hubbard’s girlfriend claimed she did not hear anything during the night except for a “quiet slap.”

The deputy drove the mother and child to University Hospital so that the girl could be treated. A caseworker with the Department of Family and Children Services was also notified, the report said.

New Details Released in Jackson Murders; Tip Line Created

Aiken County Sheriff Michel Hunt is asking for the community’s help in identifying a suspect in the horrific double murder of a beloved Jackson couple.

The sheriff’s office formed a task force with SLED as they continue to aggressively investigate the shooting deaths of Navy veteran Louis Baker Cochran and his wife Sandra Cochran. The couple and their dog were found dead at their Green Pond Road home on Dec. 8, but it has been estimated that they had been for three days.

VIDEO OF PRESS CONFERENCE HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhBVnseyYP0

Cochran 1Louis Cochran  was found outside at the back of the home while Sandra Cochran and the dog were inside. It is not known how the killer got in because there was no sign of doors or windows being forced open.

At today’s news conference, Sheriff Hunt stressed that the person or persons involved are dangerous and could hurt anyone who knows or suspects their involvement.

“The suspect(s) continues to pose a danger, not only to other persons, but also family members and friends close to them,” he said, during the morning event held at the Aiken County Detention Center. “It is possible that they may strike out violently and unpredictably against those they care about the most.”

Cochran 2The sheriff said it has been their experience that someone close to the person or persons who committed the crime may have an indication about their involvement.

He stressed that family members or friends may find it difficult to give information to law enforcement but said the tip may be key to preventing another tragic death.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cochran Homicide Task Force. You can call the  tip line and leave a message on the voice mail. The tip line number is 803-507-1437. You do not have to leave your name, but if you would like to talk to an investigator, you are asked to leave your name and number.

You may also email your information. The email address is: investigations@aikencountysheriff.org.

Citizens also have the option of calling in a tip to CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-888-CRIME-SC or www.sccrimestoppers.com .

The sheriff released no new details today saying it would not be appropriate because of the ongoing investigation.

Cohran carFor example, the sheriff would not say where the couple’s car was found. Their red 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spider, which has a tan top, was taken and has since been recovered.

And the home was burglarized, but information about what was taken has not been released.

“Evidence indicates that the subjects spent time ransacking and stealing from the home after murdering the Cochrans,” Sheriff Hunt said.

When asked whether any of the items had shown up in local pawn shops, the sheriff said he could not comment.

And there is still the question of the motive behind the crime and why this elderly couple was targeted.

Sheriff Hunt did say that they have interviewed witnesses, but he said their are others in the community who also have information and who need to come forward.

“It is also likely that others saw or heard something significant between the dates of Dec. 4 through Dec. 8 regarding the murders and at the time, they may not have recognized it as being relevant to the case,” the sheriff said. “Sometimes the smallest piece of evidence can make the biggest impact in a case.”

A Wrens police officer was arrested Thursday on accusations that he had obscene contact on the Internet with someone he believed to be a juvenile.

Wrens Officer Brett Smith mugOfficer Brett Smith, 31, was arrested Thursday morning by the GBI on a Grand Jury Arrest Warrant that includes five counts against him:

  • 3 counts: Obscene Contact with a Child
  • 2 counts: Obscene Internet Contact with a Child

GBI Agent Leigh Brooks said Smith began communicating with someone online a year ago that he believed to be an underage girl. But he was actually communicating with an undercover GBI agent. Smith is accused of having obscene contact with the “underage girl” over the last year, according to Brooks, who works with the GBI’s Child Exploitation And Computer Crimes Unit.

Smith was employed at Wrens Police Department in Jefferson County, but he was immediately suspended after his arrest. He resides in Thomson. He was jailed without bond in Columbia County, suggesting the crimes may have occurred there.

Wrens Police officials released this statement after the arrest:

“The City of Wrens has suspended Brett Chapman Smith from employment while the City conducts an internal investigation into the allegations.”

The charge of “Obscene Internet Contact with a Child” is described this way in the Georgia law:

A person commits the offense of obscene Internet contact with a child if he or she has contact with someone he or she knows to be a child or with someone he or she believes to be a child via a computer on-line service or Internet service, including but not limited to a local bulletin board service, Internet chat room, e-mail, or on-line messaging service, and the contact involves any matter containing explicit verbal descriptions or narrative accounts of sexually explicit nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or sadomasochistic abuse that is intended to arouse or satisfy the sexual desire of either the child or the person, provided that no conviction shall be had for a violation of this subsection on the unsupported testimony of a child.
(2) Any person who violates paragraph (1) of this subsection shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than ten years or by a fine of not more than $10,000.00; provided, however, that, if at the time of the offense the victim was 14 or 15 years of age and the defendant was no more than three years older than the victim, then the defendant shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature.

Second Man Arrested in Augusta Call Center Murder

A second suspect’s been arrested in last week’s shooting death of a supervisor of Teleperformance call center in Augusta, and he’s a local teen with a history of gun charges.
victim

Tarez Gordon, 18, of Augusta (above), was taken into custody Friday night at a residence on Shalimar Drive. He’s been charged with murder, armed robbery and weapon possession in the Dec. 10th slaying of 29-year-old Randy Ramos (pictured at right).

Authorities have already charged 24-year-old Marquise Yarbary (pictured) with the murder, and they are working to identify additional suspects in the killing.

YARBARY, Marquise-2The victim was shot in the chest in the call center parking lot, which is near Augusta Mall. Co-workers of Ramos say he was a great supervisor at Teleperformance and had one son.

WGAC’s Austin Rhodes has reported that the shooting was a “targeted hit,” citing sources close to the investigation who say Ramos had dealings with the suspects. Authorities say two suspects likely fired the shots at Teleperformance with a third driving the getaway car.

tarez2Why was he free? The fact that Gordon was free to participate in the murder is surprising since he was charged last year with possession of a pistol by someone under 18. He was 17 at the time. In February 2015, Judge Patricia Booker gave him 12 months of probation in that case. Yet, just two months later, he was AGAIN charged with gun possession as well as theft by taking, theft by receiving stolen property and marijuana possession. Judge Booker again slapped him on the wrist with more probation.

A report says Gordon’s second arrest came after he stole a .38-caliber revolver from his grandmother. Deputies who took the grandmother’s report said that Gordon was often seen by residents of Providence Place Apartments carrying guns, and worse, breaking into apartments there. Yet deputies said he “has not been caught because he always leaves before police can arrive,” a sheriff’s report said.

Gordon is proud of his criminal behavior. A public search shows Gordon has a Facebook page that shows him posing with a gun (right), flashing gang signs and displaying a supply of bullets.

The other murder suspect – Yarbary – was also free on probation despite multiple convictions.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Investigative Division at 706-821-1020 during business hours or Dispatch 706-821-1080 after hours.  All calls can be held confidentially.

A Walmart shoplifter was tasered in the back while fleeing a Richmond County deputy, and his face paid the price.

Robert Lee Lewis, 51, of Hephzibah, attempted the “Garden-Center exit” on Friday evening after loading up a $139 microwave, $60 jumper box and two bottles of anti-freeze in a cart and not paying.

Deputy Steven Bell was working special duty at the Dean’s Bridge Walmart when an employee alerted him to the scam, a sheriff’s report says. The deputy grabbed Lewis but the suspect tried to flee, slipping out of his jacket in the process.

“I then deployed my Taser and the probes struck Mr. Lewis in the back,” Deputy Bell wrote in his report. “As Mr. Lewis was energized, his momentum caused him to call forward to the ground.”

Lewis 2Authorities called for an ambulance, and Lewis was taken to University Hospital for treatment. The stolen items were recovered, and Lewis was eventually booked into the Richmond County Jail for shoplifting and obstruct of an officer.

Lewis is shown here (at right) from an earlier arrest in December before his face was injured. In this Dec. 5 arrest, he was charged with driving while license suspended and giving false info to police.

Report: Grovetown Dad Beat Kids with Sticks & Tied Them Up

A Grovetown man employed at an Edgefield prison was arrested Friday on allegations he beat his three sons with sticks and kept them in a basement for long periods of time with no bathroom, authorities said.

DiggsBrian Diggs Sr., 31, had already lost custody of the three boys once the allegations surfaced last month. An investigation led to a search of his home and finally his arrest Friday on six counts of child cruelty against the boys, ages 5, 6, and 9.

The allegations against Diggs surfaced Nov. 18 at the children’s schools and through DFACS. The reports said on many occasions Diggs “beats the juvenile with sticks, ties them up with tape, makes them sleep in the basement and deprives them of food and water,” according to a sheriff’s report.

Warrants are more specific, saying Diggs used a belt and whip on the boys, causing lacerations and bleeding. He would place the boys in an unfinished basement of his home for extended periods of time without a working toilet, the warrants say. The warrants say this abuse took place for at least the last 15 months.

Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Shedd said they were able to confirm most of those allegations in their search of his home. The children were checked by a doctor.

Capt. Shedd said he is not sure why it took so long for the abuse claims to make it to the sheriff’s office. “We started investigating this the moment we received notification from a school social worker,” he said. “We had never received any reports prior to this from DFACS.”

According to the sheriff’s report, Diggs works as a prison guard at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Edgefield. His employment status was not immediately available.

A LinkedIn page identified Diggs as an Army soldier, serving as Military Police for the past 14 years.

Diggs remains in the Columbia County Detention Center.

How bad is mall parking?

So bad that an Evans man parked in the fire lane at the Augusta Mall on Sunday night and then claimed to be a policeman in order to keep the spot.

“I’m a police officer. I am not moving my vehicle,” Jake Personnius told a mall cop.

JakeThe mall cop called the sheriff’s office to investigate the odd claim, and Deputy Thomas Paquette found the suspect nearby at Buca di Beppo Restaurant. (Facebook picture at right)

“Who do you work for?” Deputy Paquette asked the man.

“I am a retired Police Officer from Albany, New York,” said Personnius.

Deputy Paquette told the “officer” that he still had to move. But then Deputy Paquette spotted the driver’s wallet with a badge that said “Dignitary Protection Agent.”

Personnius, 41, then confessed that he wasn’t employed by a police department but was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

“I read Mr. Personnius his Miranda Rights,” the deputy said in his report. “Mr. Personnius further stated he has never been a Police Officer.”

The deputy found a second gold badge in the center console cup holder of the man’s vehicle that had the words “Deputy United States Marshall” on it. Personnius claimed that a friend gave it to him.

After determining the man was not a police officer, the real deputy charged Personnius with impersonating a police officer and took him to jail. And the man’s vehicle was towed from the mall.

Sex Offender Arrested for Rape in Augusta Medical Prison

A convicted sex offender at Augusta State Medical Prison is facing more time after his arrest for raping another inmate in the gym bathroom, authorities said.

Cover Issue 730(For more crime news, pick up this week’s Jail Report. It is sold in local stores.)

Isaac Reynolds, who is serving time for child molestation and aggravated sodomy, is accused of assaulting a 48-year-old man in the gym bathroom earlier this year and anally raping him, according to a warrant.

The arrest adds another stain on the prison, where an inmate died last year after being repeatedly stabbed by a fellow inmate. Tyrafred Amira Campbell was charged with murder in the death of Shannon Levi Grier.

And in 2011, inmate Inmate Antonio Wiley was found stabbed to death. Three inmates were charged with murder in that case.

Isaac ReynoldsIn the rape case, Reynolds, 28, was formally charged with aggravated sodomy for the prison rape last week in Columbia County since the prison is located in Grovetown. He was transferred to the Columbia County Detention Center on Dec. 15.

Reynolds has been in state prison since 2007 when he was 20 years old. He is serving a 25-year sentence for molesting a child in 2007 and a separate 20-year sentence for aggravated sodomy in 2006. Both of those crimes occurred in Floyd County, Georgia.

How common is prison rape? A U.S. Department of Justice report an estimated 4.0% of state and federal prison inmates and 3.2% of jail inmates in 2011-2012 reported experiencing one or more incidents of sexual victimization by another inmate or facility staff over a 12-month period.

In 2012, the U.S. Justice department issued nationally enforceable protocols to all correctional institutions to expand upon the provisions of the 2003 PREA ACT. The move is an effort to prevent, detect and respond to prison rape more effectively. The measure includes numerous provisions, such as barring juveniles from being housed with adult inmates, a ban on cross-gender pat-down searches, video monitoring and special attention to lesbian, gay, transgender or bisexual inmates vulnerable to abuse.

Baby Jesus Stolen from Evans Nativity Scene

Baby Jesus was stolen from an Evans home over the last few days, according to a sheriff’s report.

Cover Issue 730(For more local crime news, pick up this week’s Christmas edition of The Jail Report, in stores now.)

A 60-year-old Evans man said someone stole the nativity scene piece on Sunday from his front yard on Windmill Lane. A day or two later, thieves also came and took a white wooden reindeer from the same home.

The Evans man told a responding deputy that he would prosecute if the thief was found. (Note: The picture above is NOT the baby Jesus that was stolen; it is an illustration.)

Common theft. According to Wikipedia, Baby Jesus theft is the theft of plastic or ceramic figurines of the infant Jesus from outdoor public and private nativity displays during the Christmas season. The prevalence of such thefts has caused the owners of outdoor manger scenes to protect their property with GPS devices, surveillance cameras, or by other means.

One Indiana man who suffered the loss of his Baby Jesus figurine rebuffed suggestions to secure the figurines on his porch because, “that would be like putting Jesus in jail.”

While Baby Jesus thefts are largely regarded as pranks, they are set apart by the involvement of a religious icon. “They think it’s a prank, but it isn’t a prank to some of these people,” Pennsylvania state police Corporal Paul Romanic told a reporter in regards to an incident in which 10 nativity scene figures were found in a yard after being stolen from across Bucks County, Pennsylvania. “Plus, it’s just wrong to steal the baby Jesus.”

Historian Daniel Silliman has argued that, whatever the thieves’ intention, the act puts the culture of Christmas in a different light. “Baby Jesus thieves literally take the Christ out of Christmas,” Silliman writes.
