An Aiken man who tried to rob a couple in a Craigslist car scam ended up dead Wednesday when one of the victims pulled a gun and shot him, authorities said.

1533892_1386983594896375_691957088_nFrank Frazier Jr, 23 (pictured at right and above), was killed in the middle of the attempted robbery at 1 p.m. Wednesday during the meet-up at 105 Willis Hill Road in Aiken. A second would-be robber fled and was described as a black male wearing a grey hooded sweat shirt fleeing the scene on foot on Willis Hill Road.

According to Coroner Tim Carlton, a couple from Anderson came to Aiken to purchase a vehicle that they had seen advertised on Craigslist. When they attempted to purchase the vehicle, Frazier and another male pulled their guns and attempted to rob the couple.

“The (girlfriend) then drew her weapon and shot the decedent dead while the other suspect fled,” Carlton said in a press release.

Sheriff’s investigators say the female victim drew her own weapon and fired at Frazier while Frazier was pointing his weapon at her boyfriend.

“The victims got back into their vehicle, called 911 and went to SC Hwy 19 and waited for deputies,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. “This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as it becomes available.”

Frazier has previous arrests for burglary and marijuana possession, although prosecutors dropped the 2011 burglary charge before it went to trial. He was found guilty on the marijuana charge.

If you have any information on the second robber’s identity or whereabouts, please call the sheriff’s office at 803-648-6811.

The victim said Rewis told her to “shut the f*** up, and to stop screaming because she would get the cops called,” the report says.

The victim also claims Rewis threatened to kill her. She admitted that she bit Rewis on his chest and on his arm but said it was to get away from him. She also used her nails to scratch at Rewis and lost some of her nails. She escaped the home and got a neighbor to call 911.

Rewis was found at his estranged wife`s home. He claimed the victim was being aggressive with him in the fight. Officers determined he was the primary aggressor and arrested him.

An arrest has been made in the summer rape of an Augusta woman who was attacked while walking on a lonely trail near Kmart on Gordon Highway.

Carlos Rodrecus Grace, 31, has been charged with rape in the Aug. 13th attack.

Cover Issue 727For more crime stories, pick up your copy of the new Jail Report, sold in local convenience stores.

It was 8 a.m. on a Thursday morning when the 43-year-old woman was walking the trail behind Bussey’s Auto Glass on Gordon Highway. Here is the woman’s account to deputies of what happened:

The suspect approached her from behind on a bicycle and started talking to her. “What’s a pretty lady like you doing walking the woods alone?” he asked. Being a friendly woman, she told him about her past relationships and how she was trying to get off drugs.

Grace mentioned that he had just got out of a bad relationship as well. The victim went to light a cigarette and the suspect showed her the handle of a gun. The man got off his bicycle, grabbed her around the neck with his right hand and threw her to the ground.

The victim started screaming because she was afraid he was going to rape her.

“Are you going to kill me?” she asked him.

“If you don’t give me what I want, I might kill you,” he reportedly said.

The suspect then raped the woman. After he was done, the woman got up and ran out of the woods and onto the side of Boost Mobile. She ran across Gordon Highway to the Waffle House, where she was able to call 911 for help.

The victim said the rapist ran across Gordon Highway through the Kmart parking lot.

Deputies found the suspect and chased him to an abandoned apartment behind Haynie Drive, according to the sheriff’s report. At the time, Grace was only charged with obstruction and criminal trespassing. Investigators sent off forensic evidence in the rape case and it returned in November, leading to last week’s arrest of Grace on a felony rape charge.

Grace is a repeat offender with a history of simple battery and family violence. He also has convictions for forgery, harassing phone calls, and criminal trespassing. He spent a month in jail this year after pleading down a battery case.

Tabithia-GroomsIn an interesting twist, Grace is the same man who was allegedly attacked by his drunk girlfriend in June when he refused to have sex with her. The arrest of Tabatha Lee Grooms (pictured) was a story that spread internationally because of the woman’s sad mugshot. Grace remains in the Richmond County Jail under no bond.

An Evans woman has been arrested for felony obstruction after fighting with five Richmond County deputies and falling head-first into the pavement as they tried to put her in leg irons.

Lauren Comtois, 29, required five stitches at University Hospital on Saturday night after falling out of a patrol car as five officers tried to stop her from kicking.

Cover Issue 727For more crime stories, pick up your copy of the new Jail Report, sold in local stores.

Comtois’ mother, Monique Woods of Augusta, initially called the sheriff’s office for help on Saturday night (Nov. 28) since her daughter was drunk and causing problems at her home on Crane Ferry Road.

According to a sheriff’s report, Deputy Kenneth Atterton put Comtois in a patrol car to settle her down. When he released her, she started a fight with Deputy James Prior, who had just arrived to help.

Comtois was vulgar, threatened to kick the deputy’s a** and then slapped the officer in the face. The two deputies went to arrest Comtois, but she kicked Deputy Prior in his left eye, the report says.

Three other officers arrived as Comtois began kicking the windows of the patrol car. So they worked together to put the young woman in leg irons, but Comtois kept resisting and kicking.

“Ms. Comtois fell out of the rear seat while resisting and obtained a laceration to her left eye just below the eyebrow when her head hit the pavement next to the patrol car,” Deputy Prior said.

She was taken to jail but then to the hospital where she received five stitches before being returned to jail.

The Jail Report spoke to Comtois’ mother, who said her daughter is a good person who has been struggling with the death of her father four months ago. Comtois got drunk and Woods had to call the sheriff’s office.

12074929_10153341023479317_8631569703070094349_nWoods said the first officer had everything under control until Deputy Prior arrived and caused her daughter to get upset at the prospect of going to jail. Woods said she believes the officers were not careful with her daughter and pulled her too far out of the patrol car in handcuffs, allowing her head to slam onto the pavement. Woods said the impact knocked her daughter unconscious.

Comtois (pictured at right from Facebook) has been released from jail, but she could not be reached for comment.

Arrest Made in 1990 Homicide in N. Augusta with DNA Help

DNA evidence has tied a local man to a 1990 homicide in North Augusta.

Vincent HamptonVincent Maurice Hampton, 44, has been charged with murder in the slaying of Gloria Dickinson. The victim was also 44 when she was found strangled in Room 11 of the Downtown Motel on the 100 block of Georgia Avenue on Oct. 30, 1990.

In April of this year, North Augusta Public Safety received notification from SLED that there had been a CODIS DNA hit on the cold case linking Hampton to the victim.  Detectives discovered that Hampton was jailed in the Richmond County Detention Center on simple battery charges. He also had been convicted in 2014 of aggravated assault, weapon possession and terroristic threats, but he only got probation.

Hampton fought extradition back to South Carolina after he was linked to the murder through DNA, but he was eventually released from Georgia and transferred to North Augusta.  On Thursday, he was booked and transported to the Aiken County Detention Center.

“It’s important to point out that the key piece of DNA evidence left behind at the scene of the crime that eventually led authorities to Hampton had not yet been discovered,” NADPS Lt. Tim Thornton said in a press release. “It is a tool that has proven itself time and time again to be crucial for successful prosecution.  Law enforcement personnel are encouraged about the potential resolution of other cold cases where scientific methods have yet to be discovered.”

Hampton has been in the Aiken County Jail before with a 2011 arrest for DUI and open container.

The Jail Report featured Hampton over the summer for an assault on his daughter. In that case, authorities say he had been drinking and assaulted his teenage daughter at a family party in Augusta. A sheriff’s report says he grabbed the girl by the arm and when she snatched it away, he grabbed her harder and slammed her into a car door.  The girl had bruises on her right arm and her back. She also had scratches on her back and she had a knot on the back of her head, the report said.

A deputy spoke with Hampton on the phone to meet with him about that assault, but Hampton said no and that the officers would have to find him, the report said. They found him a few weeks later.

If you run from a Richmond County deputy, you may get tasered.  And when you get tasered, your face may not like it.

Ask Raymont Everett.

Authorities say the Augusta man was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped last Friday for suspended registration. Everett wasn’t wearing his seat belt and gave Deputy Joshua Cunningham a fake name when the deputy asked his identity, a sheriff’s report says.

Cover Issue 728(More crime stories are available in this week’s Jail Report. Pick up your copy at local stores.)

The officer handcuffed the man and started walking him to a patrol car in an attempt to obtain his identity.

“Mr. Everett fled on foot while handcuffed,” the deputy wrote in his report. “Mr. Everett continued in the direction of Wrightsboro Road in heavy traffic at which time I deployeed my Taser.”

Everett, 21, of Thomas Lane, was struck by the Taser in the right upper arm and right rear of his thigh. The suspect fell to the ground and was taken into custody.

The face-plant – while handcuffed – caused several cuts to Everett’s face and he required treatment from paramedics. His injuries were so bad, the jail’s nursing staff wouldn’t accept him into the detention center until he went to GRU hospital, a report says.

Later, Everett was booked on charges of obstruction and giving false information to police.  A body cam recording captured the whole incident, a sheriff’s report says.

A background check shows Everett was sentenced this year to five years of probation after he was convicted of several counts of forgery.

Report: RCSO Deputy Head-Butted His Ex-Wife

$

After first refusing to release an incident report on a deputy’s domestic violence arrest, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has now revealed that Deputy Anthony Bottom was accused of head-butting his ex-wife on Tuesday.

DEPUTY ANTHONY BOTTOM-3The deputy was arrested for simple battery and trespassing in the incident at his ex-wife’s home on Georgetown Drive in Augusta. He was also placed on administrative leave.

According to the sheriff’s report, Bottom insisted on going to the victim’s home at 3 p.m. Tuesday to check on his children even though his wife texted him not to come while the children were there. Bottom rang her doorbell and began yelling when she answered the door. She told him to leave and he didn’t.

“She opened the door and unlocked the screen, again telling him to leave and come back another day,” a sheriff’s report says. “He then pushed himself into the residence and got face to face with her. She stated she again told him to leave. The victim stated at this time, Mr. Bottom head-butted her in the left eye.”

The victim told Bottoms that he had head-butted her. He replied, “I didn’t put my hands on you.” And he then walked back to his truck. Both Bottom and his ex-wife called the sheriff’s office.

Responding deputies found the victim with redness in the whites of her left eye with swelling to the upper eyelid. Bottom said his ex-wife had not allowed him to see his three children in several weeks and he was checking to see if they were OK. Deputies arrested Bottom and took him to jail.

The details come from a sheriff’s report that was released Thursday. The RCSO Public Information Office initially declined to provide the report to local media. A spokeswoman said domestic violence reports were not releasable until after it had been resolved in court.

But press attorney David Hudson said the Georgia Open Record laws provides for release of reports after an arrest has been made. The Jail Report has written dozens of stories about domestic violence arrests with the help of incident reports that were released by the sheriff’s office.

After being challenged on the law, the sheriff’s office emailed the report on Thursday.

“We are not sure why the report wasn’t released in a more timely fashion but are thankful the sheriff’s office did provide it today,” Jail Report Publisher Greg Rickabaugh said Thursday. “The PIO department has been very helpful and professional with the release of information in most every other circumstance.”

SELF, GregoryThe Richmond County Sheriff’s office inadvertently released probationer Gregory Self (pictured) from the jail Thursday night and are trying to track him down.

It’s the second inmate the jail has mistakenly released in the last two months. The last one was a suspect wanted for murder who remained free for over a month.

In the most recent case, authorities say Self was committed to the detention center on a probation violation in August. He was driven to court Thursday to appear on a criminal trespass charge and was sentenced to 90 days for the offense.

Self, who is a trustee, would have been released on Jan. 23. But after Self’s return to jail, his sentence was miscalculated, leading to his inadvertent release, sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said in a press release.

“The Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking Gregory Self to return him to the Detention Center to complete the short amount of time left on his sentence,” Lt. Rollins said.

In the previous case, an individual identifying himself as Alphonso Bray was booked into the Richmond County Jail for a local charge of disorderly conduct which did not require fingerprinting. The subject was freed on a cash bond.

“As he was exiting the jail on October 31, he was required to submit to a fingerprint scan, and the fingerprint scan came back identifying him as Terrance Brown, an individual wanted in Burke County for a Grand Jury arrest warrant for murder,” Lt Rollins said at the time. “The booking officers did not notice the discrepancy.”

Brown’s picture (shown at right) appeared in The Jail Report under the Bray alias and family members of Bray identified Brown to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Terrance BrownA month later, on Dec. 2, authorities with the U.S. Marshals Service, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Wrens Police Department captured Brown and he remains jailed in the Burke County Jail.

After Brown’s mistaken release, the Richmond County Sheriff‘s Office said they were initiating a review of the procedures and an internal investigation into the release.
