A shooting incident late Wednesday night resulted in the death of a 42-year-old Aiken man.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office reported that William Mathis was found with a gunshot wound by an officer responding to reports of shots fired on Columbia Avenue Northeast, near Chesterfield Street in Aiken.
Emergency responders transported Mathis to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where he was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. Wednesday, Coroner Darryl Ables said. The incident unfolded shortly after 11:40 p.m., when authorities received the call about the shooting. An autopsy for Mathis is scheduled for next week in Newberry.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office, in collaboration with the Aiken Department of Public Safety, is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
