A 15-year-old boy from Evans died early Thursday after losing control of his family’s Jeep on Riverwood Parkway and crashing into two pine trees, according to authorities.
Gordon Carmichael was killed in the accident around 4:30 a.m. near Greenbrier High School, close to the Amberley neighborhood. He had reportedly left home overnight and taken his parents’ Jeep, driving around the area and school parking lot before getting back on the road.
“I am not sure why he was out that early in the morning,” said Maj. Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
A passerby spotted the wreckage and alerted the sheriff’s office. At 5:50 a.m., Carmichael’s mother reported him missing after discovering he was gone.
Carmichael was a sophomore and a member of the Greenbrier football team, although he was not playing this fall due to an injury. In light of his death, the school has canceled all sporting events.
Journey Community Church is holding a celebration of life for Carmichael on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The accident is still under investigation.
