A 2-year-old boy Augusta has died two days after he was reportedly found in a bathtub.

Rayshon Roberts died late Friday at Wellstar MCH Health, according to a Monday press release from Coroner Mark Bowen. An autopsy has been scheduled.

“[Rayshon] was taken to the hospital on 07/24/2024 after reportedly being found unresponsive in a bathtub,” the coroner said in an email.

While the child lived on Fayeteville Drive, the incident occurred at a residence on Cross Tree Court.  Before the death, authorities charged 20-year-old Danashia McClennon with cruelty to children in the first-degree.

According to a warrant, McClennon allegedly left the 2-year-old boy alone in a bathtub when he hit his head and fell face first into the water. He ended up in critical condition with internal injuries and difficulty breathing at the hospital and eventually died at 11:36 p.m. Friday.

Adding to the mystery is a sheriff’s report that says a firefighter arrived at the residence to find a woman trying to give CPR to the child. The woman claimed she left the child unattended in the bathtub and returned to find him face down in the water. But the child’s diaper was dry, according to a sheriff’s reports.

At the hospital, the child’s mother told authorities that she had allowed a woman to take care of the child before being notified to come to the hospital after an accident.

A GoFundMe page set up by Deana Roberts called the child a “happy little baby boy.”

“Unfortunately to say I need help with his funeral and funeral plans. Anything will help,” the GoFundMe page says.

McClennon remained Monday in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center under no bond.
