Two men dressed as women have been charged with shoplifting two 39-inch TVs from the Martinez Walmart.

It took authorities five days to identify and arrest the thieves, but Columbia County authorities have charged 24-year-old Andre Hill of Augusta (left) and 22-year-old Christopher Elzey of Augusta (right) with felony shoplifting in the theft of the Emerson flat-screen TVs, valued at $400 each.

According to a sheriff’s report, the shoplifting occurred at 2 a.m. on April 11. Three days later, a loss prevention officer was reviewing surveillance tape from that day when he discovered the shoplifting.

“Two men dressed as females entered the store, grabbed a shopping cart, selected two TVs from off the shelf and exited the store, passing all points of sale,” according to a sheriff’s report.

The video also showed the cross-dressers had a getaway driver in a small red, four-door passenger vehicle.

Deputies didn’t have to look far for the person who destroyed three mailboxes on Peach Orchard Road over the weekend.

Joseph Ryan, 20, walked up to officers Sunday night and confessed, just as the officers were clearing the road of a damaged mailbox and post on the 3600 block of Peach Orchard Road.

“As officers approached the mailbox to remove it from the roadway, the suspect approached on foot and stated he broke the listed mailbox along with 2 others because he was angry with his girlfriend and wanted to go to jail because he had no where else to go,” a deputy wrote in his report. “Suspect further stated he was contemplating robbing the TPS Gas Station on Peach Orchard Road as well, but we arrived before he could complete the action.”

Deputies arrested the subject and transported him to jail for destroying mailboxes. He remains there today on a $3,500 bond.

MOTORCYCLE GANG BUSTED FOR HARASSING RIVAL BIKER IN EVANS

Five members of the Steel Horseman motorcycle gang have been arrested in Columbia County after they were caught on video confronting a rival gang member and forcing him to remove his jacket, according to authorities.

Those arrested include: Robert Deckert, 33, of Grovetown (from left, top row); Quinn Daniel Sharrow, 27, of Augusta; Daniel Cooper Inglett, 33, of Grovetown; (second row) Brock Wilson, 31, of Hephzibah, and Bradley Johnson, 43, of Evans. Each man was charged with felony false imprisonment, misdemeanor stalking and felony participation in criminal street gang activity. Bond was set at $18,800.

According to the sheriff’s report, a member of the Highway Gypsies motorcycle gang was at the Evans Cycle Center on March 7 when members of the rival gang confronted him.

“The subjects surrounded him outside his vehicle for several minutes, telling him that he was not supposed to be wearing his motorcycle jacket,” a sheriff’s report says.

The victim called deputies after the incident and showed them a video that his wife had taken on her phone.

The sheriff’s office wanted to stop the intimidation and aggressively investigated the matter, which led to this week’s arrests of the five men.

“It should come as a strong warning to all motorcycle gangs that violence, intimidation and causing fear to others will not be tolerated in Columbia County,” sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said.

A sheriff’s report says the suspects have a variety of jobs, including an operator for Augusta Utilities, an Army soldier, a Graniteville heavy equipment operator. One is unemployed and the other does not list an occupation.

An Augusta woman was stabbed to death over the weekend at her home and her boyfriend has been charged with murder, authorities said.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old Natty Ortiz-Ramos on the 2500 block of Lumpkin Road.

“The victim was stabbed multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene” at 2:11 a.m. Monday, Coroner Mark Bowen said in a press release.

The victim and boyfriend Nathan Mims were involved in a domestic dispute when Mims began assaulting Ortiz-Ramos then began stabbing her, sheriff’s Sgt. Shane McDaniel said. “Ortiz-Ramos succumbed to her injuries and passed away.  After the assault Mims stayed at the scene and surrendered to deputies.”

Mims, of the 200 block of Johnson Road in North Augusta, was treated for minor cuts and then booked into the Richmond County Jail for murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

The woman was living at the rented apartment with her small kids, the coroner said. The woman’s body was sent to the Atlanta GBI for an autopsy, which will take place Tuesday.

This is Richmond County’s 8th murder of 2014.

Mims was charged in 2011 with possession of a sawed-off shotgun, theft by taking and simple battery – family violence. Prosecutors decided not to pursue the charges and later dropped them.

A Grovetown mom was arrested Tuesday after creating a fake doctor’s note for missed school days by her 5-year-old daughter.

Starlet Redfern, 26, of Gulkana Court, Grovetown, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after an investigation by the sheriff’s office.

Baker Place Elementary Principal Leeann Fleischauer notified authorities that the child had missed 24 unexcused days and 5 excused days.

“A medical excuse was presented for (the girl) on March 12 from Dr. Renew and school personnel verified with Dr. Renew’s office that it was a fake,” a sheriff’s report says.

In fact, the child was not even a patient at the doctor’s office listed on the note.

Authorities went to the child’s home, and found her living in “deplorable conditions,” sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said.

“Trash, debris, roaches,” Capt. Morris said. “DFACS was notified.”

Authorities say it appears the mother was just lazy and didn’t take the time to prepare her daughter for school. She tried to tell authorities that she was still recovering from moving to her new trailer in Grovetown.

Redfern has been released on $1,100 bond.

An Aiken couple were busted this week for attempted robbery after acting suspiciously outside Windsor Jewelers, including wearing a mask and parking in front of the business several times.

Vanessa Drummings, 20, and James Antonio Frazier, 18, were both charged with attempted armed robbery. Frazier was also charged with mask wearing, unlawful carrying a pistol, and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.

The couple were seen parking outside Windsor Jewelers on Jefferson Davis Highway in Beech Island.

“An employee of the business told investigators that the couple parked their car several times in front of the business,” sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Feemster said in a press release. “During those occasions he observed the male passenger … in the back seat of the vehicle with what appeared to be a red shirt wrapped around his face.”

Drummings, who was driving the car, came into the business and left. An employee then saw Frazier walk out from behind the business with the red shirt wrapped around his face and get into Drumming’s car.

The couple was later stopped by Aiken police and arrested for unrelated crimes. But an investigation into their actions led to the charge of attempted armed robbery.

Sgt. Feemster said all the elements were there to charge them based on their actions as employees watched their suspicious activity and thought “something’s not right” and “something’s fixing to go down.”

The man accused of shooting a student in the head Monday  inside a Paine College classroom building has been arrested.

Xavier Cooper, 20, was charged late Monday with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and weapons in school buildings. He is accused of shooting 21-year-old JaJuan Baker, a student from Wilmington, N.C.

Authorities say the shooting followed an argument between the suspect and victim. A report says Deputy Bradley Eagler rushed to the Paine College at 1 p.m. Monday after reports of shots being fired at Haygood-Holsey Hall, a classroom and office building. The deputy found the victim bleeding from the head on the third floor.

Baker was unable to give any information because of his injury, but witnesses said a man named “Zay” fired a shot at the victim and struck him in the left side of his head above his ear, according to the sheriff’s report.

The victim was rushed to GRU Hospital, and officials say he was in critical condition with life-threatening wounds.

Meanwhile, Paine College says it will host a media briefing regarding the shooting at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Paine Shooting Linked to Bad Drug Deal

$
0
0

A drug deal gone wrong led to Monday’s shooting in a Paine College building – the third in two days and the second on campus believed to be related, and at least seven students have been sent home or banned from the campus because of the events.

During a morning news conference today at the school, Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree said the victim, JaJuan Baker had sold drugs to the shooter Xavier Deanthony Cooper a couple of days prior.

Something about the transaction went wrong angering Cooper. Roundtree would not be specific about what happened for example if the drugs were fake or Cooper received counterfeit money in the transaction.

He said they have made recent arrests of students on counterfeit charges.

On Monday, Cooper confronted Baker in Haygood-Holsey Hall and shot him in the left side of the head. Baker is being treated at GRU and is expected to survive.

Both the victim and the suspect have criminal records. Baker was charged in 2012 with a firearms violation and Cooper has been charged with various less serious crimes including simple battery and criminal damage to property.

He was charged by Richmond County Monday with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm in a school building, according to the sheriff’s office.

The weapon Cooper used in the shooting has not been recovered yet.

Roundtree stressed that the investigation is still very fluid as they try to connect the two campus shootings and the shooting earlier Monday on Laurel Street.

Roundtree said he is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to the successful prosecution of these cases and refused to speculate on how the crimes are connected.

Rumors have swirled around the campus that the shootings were gang related and the events were the result of a turf war.
“This is a complicated investigation,” Roundtree said.

Augusta Dad Defends Girl with Razor Attack on Her Ex

A 63-year-old Augusta man pulled a razor blade on his daughter’s abusive ex-boyfriend over the weekend and left the man with cuts all over his face.

After a scuffle, the ex-boyfriend, 48-year-old Terrance Clifford (pictured) was the one arrested for two counts of simple battery, one count of trespassing and an order to show cause warrant.

Authorities say Clifford punched the ex-girlfriend and her dad at their residence on Cedar Street. The father told deputies that Clifford came to the house at 10:45 p.m. Saturday and argued with his daughter about a missing credit card.

“He also stated that Mr. Clifford began to argue with him,” a deputy’s report says. “He advised Mr. Clifford to leave and he then became combative striking (his daughter). Mr. Clifford then began to strike him so he grabbed old razor blade and proceeded to fight with Mr. Clifford. He stated that in an attempt to protect himself, Mr. Clifford sustained lacerations to the face.”

Clifford fled the home in a blue Subaru Legacy, but deputies quickly caught up with him at GRU Hospital, where he was treated for his wounds and then arrested. He remains in jail under no bond
