An Aiken County man is currently in custody, accused of shooting his wife in the face in a horrific way that left her jaw hanging from her face.

Law enforcement officers from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to a residence late Monday on Sandra Lane in Salley following reports of a shooting incident.

Responding deputies encountered 41-year-old Christopher Gleaton outside the residence, seeking assistance for his injured wife. Authorities entered the home where they discovered the victim, Gleaton’s wife, in a dire condition.

Her left jaw was visibly damaged, with blood splattered throughout the premises. In an effort to control the bleeding, officers provided the victim with a shirt to cover “what was left of her jaw,” a report says.

Emergency medical services rushed the victim to the hospital for medical attention. As of now, the extent of her injuries and current condition remain undisclosed.

Gleaton has been charged with attempted murder and weapon possession. He is currently held at the Aiken County Detention Center pending legal proceedings.

Graveyard Mystery as Baby’s Body Missing from Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Augusta

A man who buried his baby at an Augusta cemetery 23 years ago is seeking answers after her remains could not be found.

Kamaron Hickman said the family no longer lives here and decided last year to exhume Jada Kai Hickman’s body from Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Augusta. They had planned to cremate her remains and carry her memory around their neck. She died in March 2001 when she was six months old.

“What was supposed to be a positive experience has turned into an absolute nightmare,” Hickman said in a Jan. 3 Facebook post. “I get a phone call saying that no remains were found. The staff told us that they dug up all 3 plots that we purchased back then with zero success and concluded that after all this time, the remains ‘may have’ returned to the earth. I don’t remember a lot from that day but I do know she was buried in a white casket, little white shoes, a white dress, a headband and her favorite rattle toy.”

Hickman, of Jacksonville, Fla., said his daughter passed away in her sleep 23 years ago in Germany where he was stationed in the Army. He was quickly relocated to Augusta and buried her body at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Deans Bridge Road.

“Last year, we decided to exhume her body, cremate the remains and carry whatever ashes with us since we no longer live close,” he said.

He said officials asked if they wanted some dirt from the plot for their ceremony, which rubbed him the wrong way.

“I know 23 years is a long time; I’ve made peace with God knowing her soul is with Him in a better place, but now this,” he said. “It’s like the scar got ripped open and I’m twenty one years old all over again. I just want to know where my daughter’s remains are. I pray this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

Hillcrest General Manager Clifton Atwood referred questions Wednesday to a corporate office in Texas. Spokesperson Christopher James released this short statement: “We respect the privacy of the families we are honored to serve and, as result, we are unable to discuss this matter with the media. However, we can say that we are working closely with the family.”

Hickman said Wednesday night that he planned to file a report with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office to see if any investigation could help.

A video Hickman posted from Hillcrest has gone viral as the mystery deepens with many local residents expressing concerns since some have relatives buried there.

Katie Starr Rose said, “I have family buried there and my grandfather didn’t have a plaque until my grandmother passed in 2020 now I am worried he wasn’t buried there now. I am so sorry for your loss and you need to call the funeral home that handled her burial.”

Christal Ortiz said, “I live here, less then a mile from this place and my parents are in this same resting place.”

Gwendolyn Baker said, “The bones should still be there in the casket. So you telling me the entire casket is missing? I’ll flip … out.”

A homeless man stabbed an Augusta victim multiple times Thursday near the Salvation Army shelter.

Rashad Jamal Merritt, 35, was charged with aggravated assault in the attack on 55-year-old year Calvin Walker Jr., a sheriff’s report says.  The homeless suspect has a history of domestic violence and other felonies that only resulted in probation.

Merritt got into an argument with the victim around lunchtime Thursday near the shelter at 1384 Greene Street. A witness told authorities that the pair had been in an argument before fighting.

“The witness states that the suspect produced a folding pocket knife and stabbed the victim 5-10 times,” the report says. “The witness states that the suspect continued to stab the victim while he was lying on the ground attempting to fend off the attack.”

The two men could be heard by workers at the Salvation Army Center of Hope, and a few employees came out and rendered aid to the victim until EMS arrived. Neither man was staying at the shelter, according to Salvation Army officials.

The victim was rushed to the hospital while Merritt was captured at the bus station on Broad Street and detained.

RCSO Deputy Fires at Fleeing Suspect After Domestic Call

A Richmond County deputy fired at a fleeing felon who was suspected of firing his weapon Sunday night during a domestic dispute, authorities said.

Quandre Davis, 31, was eventually captured without injuries resulting from any gunfire, sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee said in a press release. The deputy who fired, Deputy Diana Santiago, has been placed on administrative leave while the sheriff’s office investigates her decision to fire at the fleeing suspect.

Warrants say Davis fired his gun before fleeing on foot. He shouted that deputies “would have to shoot him” and made a gesture that implied he was going to shoot at the deputies.

The incident started when officers responded to Damascus Road around 8:30 p.m. Sunday for a domestic incident with shots fired. The domestic violence victim told officers that Davis had earlier removed a gun from her center console and fired it away from her. He then returned back to her vehicle and fired it while she was inside the car, striking the driver’s side quarter panel and shattering the driver’s side rear window, warrants say.

“Deputies observed a male subject fire a gun in an unknown direction,” Sgt. Lee said. “When Deputies attempted to make contact with the subject, he fled on foot.  During the foot pursuit, a Deputy fired one shot at the subject who continued to flee on foot until he was captured a short time later.”

The sheriff’s office said it will not send Sunday night’s officer-involved shooting to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation since no one was hurt. In the past, the agency has asked the GBI to handle cases when officers have fired their weapons in order to have an independent investigation.

“The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is on scene and will investigate this case since no injuries occurred to the subject or deputies,” Sgt. Lee said.

Davis is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault upon a police officer x2, weapon possession and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.

Davis spent much of his life in prison after his conviction for felonies when he was 15 years old. He was released in December 2022 after serving 14 years in state prison for multiple counts of armed robbery, kidnapping and aggravated assault. Details of those earlier crimes were not available.

The owner of two massage parlors has been busted for allegedly providing clients with sex services.

Zhi Ye, 63, is the owner of Ye’s Massage and Ye’s Massage Too, both located on Wrightsboro Road. She was charged on Friday night with two counts of keeping a place of prostitution, both misdemeanors.

Richmond County got a tip about the businesses and sent in an undercover officer in November and December to get a massage. At both locations, an employee grabbed the officer’s genitals and asked if he wanted it fast or slow while motioning her hand up and down, authorities said. The officer said he was only there for a massage.

A search warrant was executed on Dec. 7, and an employee claimed they were not doing anything illegal. The employee was not charged, but warrants against the owner say she exercised control over a place offering “seclusion for the practice of prostitution.”

“The accused knowingly permitted the use of such place for the purpose of prostitution,” a warrant says. “Employees of the accused’s business performed sex services in exchange for compensation.”

The alleged sex acts that led to criminal charges, and Ye was formally arrested on Friday. She has been released on bond.

In an Aiken County courtroom filled with a somber atmosphere and a sense of closure, Thomas Michael Arrington was sentenced Tuesday for a 2021 high-speed pursuit that resulted in dramatic gunfight in North Augusta, leaving one officer injured and multiple vehicles damaged.

On that terrifying day on Dec. 9, 2021, North Augusta Public Safety officers responded to a possible burglary in the area of Arch Drive. The situation escalated when officers attempted to stop a fleeing felon, identified as Arrington. The pursuit reached dangerous speeds on Georgia Avenue, culminating in a violent collision at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and East Martintown Road, involving three vehicles and overturning one.

Arrington, displaying a blatant disregard for public safety, opened fire on officers during rush hour traffic, firing a total of 49 shots. NADPS Lt. Aaron Fittery was struck in the leg but continued to perform his duties as the pursuit unfolded. Arrington was eventually apprehended, marking the end of the dangerous incident.

On Tuesday, authorities say that Arrington received a sentencing that reflects the severity of his actions:

25 years (concurrent) for 4 counts of attempted murder

3 years (concurrent) for failure to stop for blue lights and siren

5 years for unlawful carrying of a firearm

1 year (suspended to time served, concurrent) for other charges

The North Augusta Public Safety expressed gratitude towards the Aiken County Solicitors Office, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, ATF RAGE Unit, and other surrounding agencies for their support during and after the incident. Lt. Clay Swann conveyed appreciation for the unwavering support from the citizens of North Augusta.

“Today was a day for closure as well as a solemn reminder of duty and sacrifice,” NADPS Lt. Clay Swann said in a press release. “While it is the hope of every law enforcement officer to go home safely each day, they also realize the dangers of the profession and willingly place themselves in harm’s way to serve their communities.”

An Evans man has been charged with murder in the overnight death of his wife at the Masters Inn on Washington Road in Augusta, authorities said.

Michael Paul Mitchell, 53, is accused of strangling 51-year-old Marchelle “Hope” Pilger with a towel, authorities said.

Just after midnight Thursday, authorities from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call at the Masters Inn at 3027 Washington Road. What initially began as a report of a suspicious situation escalated rapidly as deputies arrived to discover the lifeless body of Pilger.

Mitchell was promptly detained by authorities and subsequently escorted to the Criminal Investigations Division for further questioning.

An illegal immigrant is on the run, accused of raping his girlfriend’s 10-year-old niece on New Year’s Eve in Aiken.

Jose Ulises Jiminez Martinez, 24, has a warrant for his arrest for criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said this week.

The girl’s mother and others have been posting on social media about the case with a photo of the suspect, which the sheriff’s office confirms is the suspect.

“He ran and hasn’t been seen since,” a Facebook post said. “5’8″ and usually a hat on or a man bun. They think he could be in the Aiken area because he has family there!”

A deputy responded on New Year’s Day to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where the victim’s mother said her daughter had been raped the night before while in the care of the victim’s aunt and boyfriend in Aiken. The girl lives with her mother in Warrenville.

The mother showed authorities a Facebook private message where Martinez said he was “too drunk to remember anything that happened the previous night,” a sheriff’s report says. The mother said she was told Martinez got very drunk at a party and later went home.

“Ulises then took (the girl) to the bedroom and had non-consensual sex with her,” the report says.

The mother brought her daughter to the hospital for a rape kit as soon as she was told about what happened. The girl was later interviewed and an warrant subsequently issued.

A Bamberg County man killed himself after a standoff with Aiken police on Thursday night.

Shanon Crosby, 42, of Bamberg, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with officers in a parking lot between Millbrook Baptist Church and McDonalds in the 1900 block of East Pine Log in Aiken, according to Coroner Darryl Ables.

The incident unfolded at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday when officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot. Upon arrival, they encountered Crosby, who, instead of complying with officers’ instructions to exit the vehicle, chose to barricade himself inside, the coroner said.

Efforts to negotiate with Crosby proved futile as he remained unresponsive to officers’ pleas to exit the vehicle. The standoff took a fatal turn when a single gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle. Crosby was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.

Crosby had a long list of pending 2022 charges in Bamberg County that include drug trafficking, fleeing police, resisting arrest and weapon possession.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office promptly initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Crosby’s death, in collaboration with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). As part of the investigative process, Crosby’s body is set to undergo an autopsy in Newberry.

An Augusta burglar called 911 for help last week after getting stuck inside a downtown high-rise and defecating in his pants, authorities said.

Brandon Thorne, 22, of Aiken, was a stinky mess when deputies took the elevator to rescue him from the 15th floor of the building at 699 Broad St. It was just after midnight Wednesday.

Thorne had called 911 for help from a stolen cell phone, saying he was locked inside the building and unable to get out. Security officers directed them to the 15th floor in the offices of Motus, which uses the space for Vision Wireless, a wireless expense management company. The high rise – billed as the city’s most prominent downtown building – is also home to The Pinnacle Club on the 17th floor and the Human Resources teams for Augusta University and AU Health on the eighth and ninth floors.

After finding Thorne, officers noticed that he had feces on the back of his pants and left some on the furniture he had been sitting on. They found a shattered glass door, which may have been his entry point.

The suspect claimed he had gone into the building for safety from two individuals who were trying to kidnap him. While inside, he opened brand new cell phones sitting on office desks and discharged a fire extinguisher, authorities said.

Once he got downstairs, Thorne confessed that no one was trying to kidnap him, but he could not offer an explanation as to why he was inside. He was charged with criminal attempted burglary, a felony. He was booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, where he was given an clean pair of orange pants. He remained in jail on Sunday night, unable to make a $5,700 bond.

Thorne is the same suspect charged in Aiken in November 2022 with urinating in public, which led to a $257 fine.

The suspect who failed miserably in robbing the Bank of America was caught the next day after walking out of the Wrightsboro Road Walmart with kids clothing, authorities say.

Carlton Salder, 57, of Hephzibah, is seen on camera Tuesday after walking into the Peach Orchard Road bank, his head covered by a hoodie and his hand in his jacket, like he had a weapon. He demanded $600 from a teller, according to authorities. Another bank employee asked what the problem was.

“Shut up, b****, give me the money before I shoot you in the face,” he reportedly said.

But a confident security guard saw what was happening and aggressively walked the suspect out of the bank without any money. A surveillance image shows the suspect getting into the back seat of a gray Honda SUV.

The robber evaded capture, but pressed his luck first thing Wednesday morning. Authorities say he walked into the Walmart on Wrightsboro Road at 7 a.m. and stuffed children’s shirts, skirts and sweatpants under his jacket. He then left without paying.

A deputy spotted him walking down Wrightsboro Road, and Sadler went from walking fast to running until the deputy threatened to Tazer him if he didn’t stop. The six clothing items were found on him.

Sadler has been charged with criminal attempted robbery and shoplifting. He remained at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Sunday night on a $34,500 bond.

Sadler has a previous conviction from 2019 after pleading guilty to cocaine possession and three counts of obstruction. Judge Daniel Craig gave him five years of probation.
