ACSO Charges Jamilla Smith’s Ex-Boyfriend with Murder

Aiken County authorities have charged Jamilla Smith’s ex-boyfriend with her murder while they continue searching for her.

Saturday’s announcement of a new charge against Daniel Harmon comes as investigators revealed new details on the day she went missing. They also spelled out why they presume she was murdered by her abusive ex-boyfriend, including blood found in his rented vehicle.

Harmon was taken into custody Dec. 5 for domestic violence and Smith’s family have not heard from her since reporting her missing. Later, in the missing person investigation, investigators obtained an arrested warrant charging Harmon with kidnapping her.

Authorities say Harmon likely killed the victim on the evening of Dec. 2 in the area of 425 Old Jackson Highway in the Jackson area. Smith called 911, stating her ex-boyfriend broke into her house and was chasing her down the road. On the 911 call, Smith sounded out of breath.

“When the dispatcher asks her where she will meet the deputy, a car engine can be heard revving before Jamilla is heard screaming and the phone appears to drop,” authorities said in a murder affidavit. “A male voice is heard telling Jamilla to get into the car and he will take her to the emergency room. Jamilla continues to scream and can be heard yelling no, don’t touch me, don’t hurt me please, and you hit me.”

The report continues, “The male is heard saying you jumped in front of the car before Jamilla says no I didn’t. Jamilla says leave me alone, it hurts and I can’t. Jamilla continues to scream no, I can’t my arm, and you ran over me. A horn can be heard and a dog barking.”

The next day, Tina McCraw, Jamilla’s mother, reported her missing. When police located Harmon in North Augusta, his rented Dodge Charger was seized. During the search, suspected blood was located in the spare tire area of the trunk. Swabs were taken from the vehicle and sent to state lab and known samples of Smiths.

“Search warrants were obtained for Jamilla Smith’s cell phone and the results show no activity since December 2,” the report says.

Authorities say they believe Harmon killed her, especially since her family has not heard from her in weeks.

“This is not consistent with Jamilla Smith’s known behavior. Tina McCraw, Jamilla Smith’s mother, speaks with her daughter several times a day. Jamilla Smith has not reached out to either of her two children, her father Jame Smith, nor any of her siblings. Jamilla Smith has had no cell phone activity since December 2,” the report says.

Also, Harmon was found to have hit Jamilla Smith with a vehicle and did not transport her to the hospital.

If anyone has any information on this investigation, they are encouraged to contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office at 803-648-6811. Tipsters can also send a message about this case by going to www.aikencountysheriff.net .

Evans Man Charged in Wreck That Seriously Injured Other Driver

With young kids in his car, an Evans man crossed the center lane of Hardy McManus Road over the summer and caused a devastating wreck that sent both drivers and three juveniles to the hospital, authorities said.

On Friday, Levi Pollard VI was formally charged in that two-car crash that caused the other vehicle to overturn and eject the driver, 61-year-old Randall Tudor. Pollard, who turned 40 since the wreck occurred, was charged Friday with felony serious injury by vehicle and later released on bond.

Pollard was behind the wheel of a 2018 GMC Yukon on the evening of July 2. He had a 7-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl inside. Suddenly, he traveled into the path of the victim’s oncoming GMC Sierra, a pickup truck, which had Tudor and a 15-year-old boy inside.

Pollard struck the front of the truck, sending it around counter-clockwise, striking a mailbox and then over-turning several times. According to a Georgia State Patrol report, the victim’s truck came to an uncontrolled upright rest in the private yard of 4690 Hardy McManus Road.

“(Tudor) was completely ejected as Vehicle 2 overturned,” the report says.  “(Pollard) stated he was unsure what happened, but that they struck in the middle of the roadway.”

A witness said Pollard was all over the road, continuing to cross the center line before completely entering Tudor’s lane and hitting the truck. Pollard’s vehicle came to an uncontrolled rest facing west in the private yard of 4696 Hardy McManus Road after hitting a mailbox, the GSP report says.

A check on Pollard’s blood alcohol content was requested, but it’s unclear what the results were. All five people in both vehicles ended up at Doctors Hospital with Tudor suffering the most serious injuries.

An Evans teen pulled into the path of another vehicle Sunday on Fury’s Ferry Road, causing a wreck that killed the other driver, according to Columbia County authorities.

Carson Levi Downs, 23, of Anderson, S.C., was killed in the evening wreck on New Year’s Eve, sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said. The name of the 16-year-old male was not released because he is a juvenile, but he is expected to face charges.

Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, Maj. Morris said.

The wreck happened around 8:10 p.m. Sunday at Fury’s Ferry Road and Millstone Drive. When first responders arrived, one vehicle was on fire and was extinguished by the first deputy on scene.

Authorities say the victim’s Nissan Altima was traveling west on Fury’s Ferry Road when the teen’s Toyota 4Runner pulled into the path of the Altima. Downs swerved into the on-coming lane where it struck the teen head on. Downs was pronounced dead at Augusta University Medical Center from injuries sustained in the collision. He has family connection in Evans.

“Charges are forth coming on the driver of the Toyota 4Runner at the conclusion of the investigation,” Maj. Morris said.

An Augusta boy was tragically killed on New Year’s Day when the drunk driver behind the wheel of his vehicle struck the rear of a tow truck on Interstate 520, authorities said.

Robert Brown Jr., 3, was not in a child safety seat and was pinned to the floorboard of the Cadillac Escalade after the wreck. The child was found unresponsive when first responders extracted him. He was pronounced dead on the scene, Coroner Mark Bowen said. A 7-year-old child was also in the car, but was not injured.

The driver, 31-year-old Joseph Wiggins, was drunk in the wreck and had the victim in the rear passenger seat without proper child restraints, authorities said. A front seat passenger, believed to be the boy’s mother, Regina Brown, sustained serious injuries and remained at the hospital in a coma Tuesday, according to relatives.

Robert Brown Jr. (via Facebook)

Wiggins was operating a silver 2006 Cadillac Escalade when he struck a loaded tow truck in the far right lane on the westbound lane of Interstate 520 near mile marker 11. Authorities found an open container of alcohol in the Cadillac.

“The driver was determined to be DUI and sustained only minor injuries,” a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson said. “Another 7-year-old male juvenile was also in the vehicle and sustained no injuries.”

Wiggins faces a long list of charges, including homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, DUI, reckless driving, open container of liquor, no seat belt, failure to maintain lane, no child safety restraint for child under 8, DUI with passenger under 14 x2, and unlawfully passing a stationary emergency vehicle. He is being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

The driver has a long history of speeding tickets in Richmond County, at least four in the last decade, as well as charges for driving while license suspended, failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to wear a seatbelt.

A Columbia County deputy was injured Wednesday night when her patrol car was struck on Gordon Highway, authorities said.

Deputy Brittany Brown was being treated at Doctors Hospital after firefighters cut off the door to get her out of the patrol car, sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said.

“Deputy Brittany Brown was parked, partially on the roadway, on the north shoulder of Gordon Highway, west of Lou Lane, completing an accident investigation with her emergency equipment activated,” Maj. Morris said in an email. “At the end of her investigation, she was giving a courtesy ride to an involved party and as she was entering the roadway to travel west, a 2015 Jeep Cherokee driven by Matthew Heddinger (42) stuck the front left of the patrol vehicle with the front right of his vehicle.”

Columbia County Fire had to cut the door off of the vehicle to remove Deputy Brown for treatment, he said.

Augusta Barber Killed in Wednesday Rollover Accident on Interstate 520

An Augusta man is being remembered as a talented barber after dying Wednesday in a rollover accident on Interstate 520, authorities said.

William Heath Beasley, 42, lost control of his vehicle on the interstate at mile marker 12 and rolled over several times. Paramedics transported him to Wellstar MCG, where he was pronounced dead at 5:34 p.m., Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Beasley, who went by Heath, was remembered online with pictures of him as a barber, with some even calling him “the best barber in the CSRA.” He was a skilled stylist in the area who relied on word of mouth to practice his trade. On one of his last Facebook posts, he thanked a friend for giving him a Christmas gift of a barber jacket.

Dee Cutz remembered him this way: “If I had known this was our last time, I would’ve sat and talked to you a little longer. If I had known it was just sleep that u needed you could’ve slept on my couch, better yet if it would’ve saved your life you could’ve stayed long as you wanted. Your 10 year anniversary was coming up that u open your own barbershop where our brotherhood started, u seen my passion I had for cutting hair and gave me my first opportunity and from that we built a family.”

Beasley’s Facebook page says he studied at Augusta Tech and went to Harlem High School. He also attended Southern Barber College and was affectionately called “Fatbread.” Beasley was also a father.

Beasley cut the hair of Justin Gilstrap’s hair once after the boy lost 70% of his scalp in a pit bull attack. It was a memorable day that touched Justin’s mom, Ericka Stevens. She remembered him with this post:

An Aiken man has been charged with felony DUI in connection with his girlfriend’s death last month, according to authorities.

Brian West, 32, was driving a Dodge Challenger on Dec. 16 with girlfriend Khadijah Jackson in the passenger seat. West was traveling south on Pine Log Road when it collided with a 2002 Nissan that was traveling east on Wagener Road, authorities said.

Jackson, 28, suffered critical injuries and died three days later at Wellstar MCG Health. The S.C. Highway Patrol investigated the wreck, which revealed that West was impaired, leading to his arrest Tuesday for felony driving under the influence resulting in a death. If convicted, he faces a possible fine of up to $25,100, a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison, and up to 25 years in prison.

His formal arrest came just one day before Jackson was laid to rest after a funeral at Old Storm Branch Baptist Church. According to an obituary, Jackson graduated from Fox Creek High School and was working at Kimberly Clark Corporation. The obituary lists West as a devoted friend.

In a Facebook post on Dec. 21, West remembered his girlfriend with photos of the two of them together.

“Never thought I’ll be making (this) post baby,” he said. “I really don’t even know what to say. I love you forever and forever will keep your name alive. I just wish the car would’ve hit my side.”

West pledged to give her the best homecoming service.  “We goin to make sure u get laid to rest right beside yo mother too,” he said. “I will never forget about u.”

After the Dec. 16 wreck, officers cited West for operating vehicle without license in possession and failure to maintain proof of insurance in motor vehicle. He has a long history of traffic-related offenses in his adult life, including careless driving, failure to stop for blue light, failure to stop at a stop sign, no seat belt, following too closely, speeding, driving under suspension and transporting alcohol in motor vehicle with seal broken. He has also been convicted of malicious injury to personal property.
