Fort Eisenhower officials say that the mother of the baby killed this week has been arrested.

A spokeswoman did not release the name of the child or the mother, but said the infant victim was the son of Staff Sgt. James Short of San Deigo, California. Jefferson County authorities confirm they are holding 30-year-old April Short for the U.S. Marshal’s Office.

“Short joined the Army in 2006 as a signal support system specialist and joined the Fort Eisenhower team in 2021 as a drill sergeant,” said Lesli J. Ellis-Wouters, communications director for the fort’s Cyber Center of Excellense. “The victim’s mother and spouse of SSG Short is in custody.”

The spokeswoman said that the Army has informed the Fort Eisenhower community of the identity. The post is formally known as Fort Gordon.

“We are focused on providing support to all who suffered in this tragedy,” she said in a statement. “We appreciate the sensitivity afforded to our community as we take care of our team and continue to heal from this tragic loss. This will be the final release on this event to protect the integrity of this active investigation.”

The death occurred Wednesday, and witnesses say the child was rushed to the hospital before being pronounced.

Augusta Felon Killed His Aunt’s Boyfriend After Kicking in Door of Home

An Augusta felon was arrested Sunday in last week’s home invasion and murder of a man on Bleakley Street.

Anthony Orlando Jones, 33, had reportedly been told that victim Charles Irvin was abusing Jones’ aunt, Pamela Freeman. So he put on a partial mask, kicked in the door of the home that Irvin shared with Freeman – Irvin’s girlfriend – and shot him, authorities said. Jones is a felon, convicted in Richmond County of a 2008 burglary.

The killing happened in the middle of the night at the small home, which had bars on the windows and multiple “no trespassing” signs. Authorities say Jones kicked in the front door around 1:22 a.m. Nov. 11, and fired a shot into the ceiling to get Irvin’s attention. Irvin tried to jump out a back window, but Jones fired another guns hot from a black revolver, striking the homeowner.

The victim stumbled across the street to a relative’s home and made a dying declaration, telling his aunt that his girlfriend’s nephew had shot him. Irvin died later at an Augusta hospital. He was 50 years old.

Richmond County investigators put out a flyer last week, seeking Freeman for questioning. When they located her, she told authorities that she had met with her nephew earlier, where he was told that Irvin had abused her. She was later released, and warrants were taken out for Jones.

On Sunday, Jones was booked on charges of murder, home invasion, kidnapping, battery, weapon possession, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and a hold for probation and parole officials.

For his part, the victim has been repeatedly arrested for domestic violence, with at least two convictions. Irvin was last charged with family violence in 2015 and pleaded guilty, leading to probation and community service.

The victim’s family say Freeman had been dating Irvin for years.  His sister Joyce Monfort remembered him online as a local barber who had quite a few customers and was loved.

GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the funeral, and they plan to seek assistance from the crime victims’ fund as well.

A 4-year-old Augusta boy accidentally shot himself in the head after finding a gun laying around a residence packed with children Friday night at Norris Place Apartments, authorities said.

The child was rushed to Augusta University Medical Center in critical condition. His current condition was unavailable.

Charges are being filed against the teen who left the unsecured gun lying around the residence as well as his mother, 35-year-old Brittany Senita Ryans. She was allegedly in the kitchen when the 4 year old shot himself with the unsecured weapon around 11 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

Several other children, ages 9-15, were present either in the kitchen or living room at the apartment, also known as The Vista @1931, located at 1931 Murphy Road in Augusta. The other children began screaming and running to Brittany Ryans after the gunfire, authorities said.

Brittany Ryans was being held Monday night in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on five charges of cruelty to children in the second degree. Her co-defendant is listed as 19-year-old Ladarion Ryans, who has not yet been charged, according to jail records.

‘Justice Has Been Served’… Augusta Inmate Charged in 2022 Teen Murder

The family of a beloved Augusta man is celebrating the identification of his alleged killer, and investigators didn’t have to look far to find the suspect.

Inmate Isaiah Jaheim Glenn has been locked up at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center since July 13, 2022, for dealing drugs. That is just one day after teenager JaKwan Gunter was fatally shot at the corner of 11th Avenue and Grand Boulevard.

Glenn, 19, has been held in jail ever since, adding new charges as he engaged in brutal violence against other inmates inside the detention center. He went to court earlier this month and was sentenced to decades in prison on the drug charges and gang violence in the jail.

On Monday, authorities formally charged him in Gunter’s death, taking out warrants against him for murder and two counts of aggravated assault. It’s not clear how they finally connected him to the death of the 19-year-old victim. But warrants say the 5’1” suspect shot into a residence from the 2100 block of Grand Boulevard, killing Gunter and missing a man on the porch and woman inside early that Sunday morning in 2022. Glenn was 17 at the time.

After the killing, Gunter was celebrated as a Lucy Laney High graduate, an athlete in both football and baseball and someone who was well-liked.

In 2022, authorities said Gunter’s murder was gang related but they did not identify a suspect, even as the family held a service for the teen and worked on a headstone. In May 2023, a headstone with the victim’s photos was finished and laid to mark his burial spot with the words “Loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin.”

On Monday, after investigators informed family of the charges against Glenn, relative Kasheba Green posted four simple words on Facebook: “Justice has been served!!”

A homeless man was arrested early Wednesday for exposing himself to a gas station clerk in Martinez who refused his request for a free beverage.

Dalton Whitehead, 25, was charged with two counts of public indecency and booked into the Columbia County Detention Center, where he remained Wednesday afternoon on a $2,200 bond.

Whitehead had entered the EnMarket on Bobby Jones Expressway around 2 a.m. Wednesday and asked for a free drink. The employee told him he would have to pay.

The suspect began cursing and yelling at the woman. A customer stepped in and told the homeless man to leave. He stepped outside and flipped off the clerk and man, a sheriff’s report says.

“Whitehead lowered his pants and exposed his penis” to the clerk and customer. “Whitehead walked back into the business and stated to them that he would return with a weapon.”

The male customer followed Whitehead to a neighboring parking lot, where Whitehead exposed himself again and shouted “shoot me mother***er,” the report says.

Whitehead told deputies that he never exposed himself, only slightly lowering his pants.

The suspect is well known to local law enforcement. He was charged in March with aggravated stalking of an Augusta woman, violating a temporary protective order by coming to her house and looking in her car. He got two months in jail for that one and 10 months of probation.

Whitehead also has convictions for theft by taking in Richmond County as well as two counts of burglary in Columbia County from 2015. He was later picked up for violation probation on the burglary convictions.

Grovetown Teacher Spent Time in Two Jails This Week

A seventh-grade science teacher at Grovetown Middle School was arrested Friday in Columbia County and spent time in two jails.

Kimberly Barnes, 29, was picked up on an outstanding warrant from Edgefield County, S.C., where she has been wanted since last year for credit card theft, authorities say.

According to Edgefield County Sheriff Jody Rowland, the agency had a complaint in March 2022 from Jet Middle School. A teacher said her credit card was stolen and then found after someone made gas and food purchases on it. Barnes, who was a teacher at the Johnston school at the time, was identified as the suspect, but she had already moved from her Aiken County home last year when officers went to locate her. The warrant for the misdemeanor theft was put into the system.

Barnes waived extradition over the weekend after she was arrested in Columbia County, and she was transported to Edgefield, where she later bonded out, Sheriff Rowland said.

Grovetown Middle School Principal Simon Rodriguez sent a letter to parents Monday alerting them to the teacher’s arrest.

“In an effort to keep you informed, we are notifying you of information we received regarding the arrest of current 7th grade Science teacher Kimberly Barnes, by outside law enforcement agencies, for an alleged fraud incident in another state,” the letter said. “On Friday, November 17, 2023, administrators were notified of the arrest.”

The principal said the safety of students and staff is a top priority and the school takes allegations extremely seriously and would be investigated fully. Meanwhile, a substitute teacher was provided in the teacher’s absence.

“This incident will also be submitted to the Professional Standards Commission for further review, as required,” Rodriguez said in the letter.

Grovetown Cops Catch 3 Using Drone to Drop Drugs Into Prison

Grovetown police have arrested three people on drug trafficking charges after they were caught trying to use a drone to drop large amounts of marijuana and meth into the Augusta State Medical Prison.

Just before midnight Friday, officers with the Grovetown Police Department encountered two subjects, Gerald Jiminez, 28, and Joslynn Apaisa, 26, both of Grovetown, walking near the dead-end of Railroad Avenue at its border of Augusta State Medical Prison property.

Due to an increase in thefts and entering auto cases in the city, Sgt. Michael Felicies and Ofc. Brittany Nelson exited their vehicles and began conducting a field interview of both Jiminez and Apaisa, according to Grovetown Police Chief Jamey Kitchens.

“Mr. Jiminez was wearing a backpack, which upon being searched was found to contain a remote-control drone as well as two vacuum sealed packages,” the chief said in a release. “One package contained over a pound of Marijuana, and one contained over a pound of Methamphetamine.  The drone was outfitted with a hook and release mechanism and Mr. Jiminez had additional drone parts in a separate fanny pack located on his waist.”

While Officers were speaking with the pair, 28-year-old Isreal Walters of Augusta arrived at the scene in a vehicle and stated that he was in the area to provide a ride to Apaisa, despite Jiminez’s vehicle being parked a short distance away. Walters was then detained while the investigation continued.

“Upon questioning at the Grovetown Police Department, Mr. Jiminez and Ms. Apaisa admitted to being in the area with the intent of introducing the narcotics onto the premises of Augusta State Medical Prison via the drone,” Chief Kitchens said. “Further investigation revealed that Mr. Walters was familiar with the plan and may have been in the area acting as a lookout.”

All three individuals were charged with Trafficking of Methamphetamine and Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute and committed to the Columbia County Detention Center.  More charges will likely be forthcoming, Chief Kitchens said.

A Columbia County deputy was injured on Thanksgiving morning by a drunk driver who is well known to law enforcement.

Deputy John Boy Muldrow suffered a possible concussion when he was struck by a drunk driver’s Ford F250 around 9:30 a.m. Thursday on Old Evans Road at Harden Street, authorities said.

The DUI suspect was identified as Garrett Devore, 25, of Appling, who is being held without bond for two counts of serious injury by vehicle, DUI, driving while license suspended, failure to maintain lane and a seat belt violation.

Sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said the wreck involved three vehicles. Two people were transported to Augusta University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, including Deputy Muldrow, who was off duty at the time, authorities said.

The Georgia State Patrol is working the DUI and the wreck, Maj. Morris said. The name of the other injured party was not released.

Devore has been arrested multiple times by the sheriff’s office, including a July 2022 charged for DUI and failure to maintain lane and a May 2021 arrest for possession of Schedule I drugs. He was also arrested in 2019 for operating a watercraft while under the influence. Five months ago, he accepted a plea on the drug charge that placed him on probation, according to online records. In that case, he was found with four fentanyl pills during a traffic stop.

Devore is brother of Bentley Devore, who was sentenced in February to 16 years in prison in the DUI fatal roadway crash that killed 20-year-old Morgan Shea in 2020.  According to the indictment, Bentley Devore was driving under the influence when he crashed a modified golf cart on Morris Calloway Road. He and Shea were thrown from the vehicle.

In Burke County, Bentley Devore was charged with fleeing and criminal damage to property in July 2019. In that incident, Bentley Devore was driving a 2012 Ford F250 and towing a boat when a state trooper tried to pull him over for a traffic violation in Screven County. According to news reports, Devore fled from the officer, traveling at speeds up to 147 mph before he ran into a planted field of peanuts then fled on foot.

A 4-year-old Augusta boy has died from injuries suffered when he accidentally shot himself in the head two weeks ago.

Zykee Ryans died Saturday at Wellstar MCG Health, Coroner Mark Bowen announced Monday. Ryans shot himself after finding a gun laying around a residence packed with children on the evening of Nov. 12 at Norris Place Apartments, authorities said.

The teen who left the unsecured gun lying around the residence, 19-year-old Ladarion Ryans, is being sought by police. Both he and his mother, 35-year-old Brittany Senita Ryans, are facing charges of murder in the second degree and child cruelty.

Britttany Ryans was allegedly in the kitchen when the 4 year old shot himself with the unsecured weapon around 11 p.m. Nov. 12, authorities said. Brittany Ryans remained in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Monday without bond for the murder and five counts of child cruelty.

Several other children, ages 9-15, were present either in the kitchen or living room at the apartment, also known as The Vista @1931, located at 1931 Murphy Road in Augusta. The other children began screaming and running to Brittany Ryans after the gunfire, authorities said.

Ladarion is wanted for the same murder offense and five counts of child cruelty.

In 2018, Brittany Ryan left seven children in horrid conditions inside the Budget Inn hotel. She was 29 at the time and had lots of excuses for why the children were alone. At the end of the day, she was charged with deprivation of a minor and six counts of contributing to the deprivation of a minor. She was later convicted and ordered to serve 90 days in jail and some probation.

The children made several 911 calls and hung up before deputies traced the call to a room at the Budget Inn. Deputy Shane Duggan found seven children, including an 8-month-old baby and others ages, 1, 1, 4, 5, 9 and 13.

Here is what the deputy observed in the hotel room:

• One bed and unclean floors

• Trash and empty beer cans on the floor.

• No food for the older children or formula for the babies in the room.

• The babies’ diapers were soaked and that there were no diapers for the babies or sheets on the bed.

Deputy Duggan called Ryans on her cell phone, but she couldn’t keep her story straight. She said she was on Peach Orchard Road but then said she had gotten off work and was headed to get money from her mother at the Augusta Lodge, a report says.

DFACS was notified and the children were given to their grandmother.

The Salley man who was shot during a weekend gunfight with Aiken County deputies is in stable condition at the hospital, authorities said Monday.

Deputies responded to the 300 block of Depot Avenue NE in Salley around 1 a.m. Sunday for a suspect armed with a shotgun. The man’s sister told emergency dispatchers Talley had shown up armed and left.

“Responding deputies searched the area where they found the suspect walking with the firearm,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. “After locating the suspect, he refused to put down his shotgun and continued to walk away. Later during the contact with the suspect, he put down the shotgun and placed one hand behind his back into his waistband where he continued to refuse commands from deputies.”

After being struck with a beanbag round, the suspect pointed a handgun at deputies and fired. The suspect was struck by returned gunfire from officers.

After being taken into custody, deputies rendered aid until Aiken County EMS arrived on scene, Capt. Abdullah said. No deputies were injured.

Aiken County authorities are investigating the death of a local man who was found in the water Tuesday afternoon near a boat ramp.

Devon Tricoche, 30, of Aiken, was found in the Edisto River with at least one gunshot wound to the body. The victim was found this afternoon at 1:43 p.m. at the South Fork Edisto River boat landing on New Holland Road, Coroner Darryl Ables said.

The discovery at the South Fork Edisto Boat Landing was made after a fisherman called 911 to report finding the body near the boat ramp, which sits along the 1000 block of New Holland Road in Aiken.

The sheriff’s office is investigating it as a “suspicious death,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is assisting the sheriff’s office with this investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office at 803-648-6811. Tipsters can also share information by visiting www.aikencountysheriff.net

The South Fork of the Edisto begins as a small stream in Johnston, according to gopaddlesc.com. It flows southeast for 105 miles, where it meets the North Fork near Branchville to form the Edisto River. Paddling opportunities begin where New Holland Road crosses the river northeast of Aiken, about 83 miles upstream of the confluence with the North Fork. Aiken State Park is 10 miles downstream and has a small paddling trail through the park, the website says.

A veteran crossing guard for two Columbia County schools has been arrested for skip-scanning at a Martinez Walmart, according to the sheriff’s office.

Margaret Mclaughlin, 68, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor shoplifting. She was a part-time employee with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, working as a school crossing guard for seven years, Maj. Steve Morris said.

On Thursday, the sheriff’s office investigated a case where Mclaughlin was observed shoplifting at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Evans to Locks Road.

“She was observed ‘Skip Scanning’ numerous items and left the store without paying,” Maj. Morris said.

Ironically, a local mother had reached out to this reporter this week to complain that Mclaughlin was not crossing all of the children, specifically around River Ridge Elementary School in Evans. She said her children almost got hit by a car while the guard stayed in her car.

This reporter referred the parent to Sheriff Clay Whittle, but the guard has since been arrested on a $2,200 bond and faces likely termination from her role with the sheriff’s office.
