The former used car manager at Sun Belt Nissan was charged Wednesday with felony theft for stealing over $11,000 from the car dealership, according to a sheriff’s report.

Alan Doss, 53, of Augusta, is being held in the Richmond County Jail on one count of felony theft by taking. Bond is $5,700.

Mike Watson, the Vice President at Sunbelt Nissan, told authorities that Doss was deceiving the company by taking cash from customers for his own personal use, a report says.

At least three times, Doss stole money over the summer while working at the Peach Orchard location. At one point, he took $8,400 from a customer for a down payment on a vehicle, wrote the customer a receipt and also filled out a bill of sale.

The manager also took $2,500 and $340 from other customers, the sheriff’s report says.

“Doss was asked for the bill of sale from the Financial Director, Barbara Robinson, to which Robinson stated that Doss would tell her that he would get the bill of sale to her on a later date. Robinson stated that when Doss did turn in the bill of sale which would be days later, he had no explanation of where the money was,” the sheriff’s report says. “After Doss’ termination, Doss sent … an email stating that he would like to pay the money back to Sunbelt Nissan and that he did not mean to hurt anyone.”

Former Deputy Wade Smith surrendered Wednesday morning at the Richmond County Jail and was booked on charges for allegedly tampering with evidence.

Smith, 34, was fired earlier this year after investigators learned he had confiscated a large amount of marijuana, money, and a handgun in a case and did not document it in any report or recover the property correctly.

“Deputy Smith advised that the narcotics were destroyed, the weapon was discarded and all of the cash was turned over to a relative of the defendant,” said Sgt. Monice Belser in a press release. “As a result, it was determined at a minimum that Deputy Wade Smith violated Sheriff’s Office policy and procedures.”

Smith, a 11-year-veteran of the RCSO, was fired June 4 and a grand jury indicted him Tuesday on charges of tampering with evidence and violation of oath of office.

He is being held under a $16,700 bond.

Investigators have locked up an Augusta man after discovering allegations he molested two neighborhood girls and provided alcohol and pornographic videos.

Michael Steven Story, 56, of Hollow Keg Drive, has been charged with three counts of child molestation, and one count each of electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Deputies were called to a disturbance between a mother and her 16-year-old daughter on June 29. During the routine call, the teen told deputies that her neighbor had given her alcohol at least four times, placed his hands all over her body, showed her a dildo and described what he could do with it, and gave her four pornographic movies with instructions to watch them. He also asked the girl to “send him nude pictures of herself,” a report says.

The teen said Story had also given her 10-year-old brother alcohol at his residence.

Investigators also talked to a 13-year-old girl in the same neighborhood who said Story had touched her buttocks multiple times and hugged her “chest to chest” when no one else was around, a report says.

One of the victims also accused Story of providing her Xanax and making sure she took it in front of him, the report says.

An investigation led to Story’s arrest on Thursday. He remains in jail under no bond.

A patient at Doctors Hospital has been arrested for threatening to bomb several buildings and “blow up” Sheriff Richard Roundtree, according to a sheriff’s report.

Robert Marchman, 60, was being treated at Doctors Hospital on Friday when he allegedly made the threat in front of nurses and other witnesses.

“Robert Marchman was making threats to blow up the hospital, an unknown bus station, a Circle K gas station on Walton Way and also to blow up Sheriff Roundtree,” sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Green wrote in an incident report. “I met with the witnesses and was advised that the subject did make these threats in their presence and advised them how he was making said bombs.”

Capt. Acy Miller with Doctor’s Hospital Security notified the sheriff’s office about the threats and the discovery of marijuana on the table near Marchman’s bed.

As deputies were talking to Marchman, the suspect said he didn’t like the government or cops. Marchman claimed he was “in a wheel chair because a Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputy shot him in the back,” a report said. “Marchman also advised how to make a bomb with nails and advised he has been making bombs since the second grade.”

That was enough for the homeless man to be taken to the Richmond County Jail and booked on charges of terroristic threats & acts as well as marijuana possession. He remains in jail this morning under no bond.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office just announced the termination of Deputy Brian McDuffie (right picture).

The agency’s internal affairs division launched an investigation into the deputy’s actions after Augusta mother Kenya James complained her 15-year-old son was beaten by sheriff’s deputies who mistakenly thought he was involved in a burglary. The teen, Kyvan James (left picture), weighs 98 pounds and has epilepsy, the mother said.

“After a complete and thorough investigation, Deputy Brian McDuffie was terminated from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office,” sheriff’s Sgt. Shane McDaniel said in a press release today.

WGAC’s Austin Rhodes is reporting that two other deputies, Christian Gandy and Jason Payne, have not been disciplined.

Kyvan was reportedly walking to his Gebhardt Court home with another 15-year-old about 11 p.m. Aug. 3, as officers were rushing to a possible burglary on Leawood Court.

Deputies apparently saw Kyvan and another teen on a nearby path and began running after them. Both boys ran toward James’ home and Kyvan was caught by the deputies.

Kyvan began screaming for his mother, and a neighbor called her. She rushed to the scene and explained that the boy had epilepsy.
During the scuffle with officers, both sides of Kyvan’s head had bruises and swelling.

Ms. James was scheduled to air her concerns this afternoon to Augusta commission members. She was set to address the public safety committee at 12:45 p.m.

An Augusta father has been charged with causing his son’s death while driving drunk in a pickup truck around 2 p.m. today on Hephzibah McBean Road.

John Barron Sr., 54, was driving a beat-up 1994 Dodge Dakota with this 22-year-old son John Barron Jr. in the passenger seat and an open container of alcohol next to him, authorities said. Suddenly, the passenger door flew open, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Shane McDaniel.

“The passenger door flung open and the passenger, John Barron Jr., reached out to try to grab the door, at which point he fell from the inside of the vehicle, and the vehicle basically ran over him,” Sgt. McDaniel said.

John Barron Jr. suffered blunt force trauma to the head and was rushed to GRU Hospital for medical treatment, where he died.

The victim’s father was found to be impaired, authorities said. He was charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree, DUI, driving an unsafe vehicle and open container.

Sgt. McDaniel said the truck had no business being on the road in the condition it was in.

John Barron Sr. is being held at the Richmond County Jail under no bond.

Elderly Augusta Man Charged with Raping Young Girl

An elderly Augusta man has been charged with child rape and molestation charges after a 13-year-old girl accused the man of sexually assaulting her since age 9 while he was married to the girl’s mother.

The girl also claims 78-year-old Harold “Dusty” Rhodes of pointing a loaded pistol at her, according to a sheriff’s report.

The victim only recently told relatives about the abuse when her biological father gained custody of her and she opened up to him. The sex acts were so devastating to the girl, though, that she refused to even talk about them. Instead, she wrote a five-page statement, according to a sheriff’s report.

“When I was around 8 or I’d say 9, he started putting his male parts inside my female parts,” she wrote.

The girl indicated that her mother knew about the sexual abuse because she “walked in and observed the subject with his pants off and attempting to have sex with the victim,” a sheriff’s report states. The girl begged her mother to divorce Rhodes or move away, but her mother said “she could not do anything about it,” the report says.

The victim’s father and stepmother were granted temporary custody of the girl in January. The sheriff’s office became aware of the allegations on Aug. 10.

Rhodes, of the 4700 block of Mike Padgett Highway, Augusta, was arrested Thursday and charged with rape and four counts of aggravated child molestation. He remains in jail under no bond.

A 2-year-old boy was left alone in a locked vehicle Saturday afternoon at the Travelodge motel in Augusta.

A Hephzibah man staying at the Washington Road motel spotted the boy in the truck as he was leaving to do some shopping. When he returned 30 minutes later, the child was still alone. He watched for another 30 minutes and when no one returned to get the child, he called the cops, a Richmond County Sheriff’s report said.

When deputies arrived, they unlocked the truck and removed the boy. While getting the child, a deputy spotted a prescription bottle in an open purse. The bottle had a torn label, which contained two 1 mg Xanax tablets, the report said.

The child’s mother, Heather Leann Greene, then walked up and said the boy was hers. When asked about the drugs, she said she bought them from a man named Bam who was in Room 115, the report said.

The Department of Family and Children Services was called and the child was placed with another adult, the report said.
Greene, 31, of the 3700 block of Highway 25, Hephzibah, was arrested and charged with deprivation of a minor and possession of Alprazolam, the report said.

An Aiken man has been charged with homicide by child abuse after his girlfriend’s 2-year-old boy died at GRU Hospital.

Ivory James Blackshire, 28, is accused of beating the child and leading to injuries that caused his death, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said.

“As far as I know, the mother was at work. She left that child and another child in his care,” Capt. Abdullah said.

Blackshire called for help on Thursday from his girlfriend’s home on Dallas Circle. The child was rushed to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where officials found bruises on the boy. He was later taken to GRU.

Blackshire was initially charged with causing great bodily injury to a child. But the boy died, leading authorities to amend the charges to homicide by child abuse.

Blackshire is currently in the Aiken County Detention Center.

Capt. Abdullah said he did not believe the other child in Blackshire’s care, a 4-year-old boy, suffered any serious injuries. “As far as I know, the other child is fine,” the captain said.

Oddly enough, Blackshire had spent eight days in jail on a DUI sentence before being released Wednesday.

Paine College Reacts Quickly to Sexual Battery of Student

A male Paine College student was accused of sexual battery on a female classmate last week and the reaction by the new campus police department was swift.

The campus immediately sent out an eBlast to students informing them of the incident at Paine Villas and the campus police arrested the suspect within hours.

Alexander Riddle, 19, is accused of touching the vaginal area of a female student while at Paine Villas last Wednesday at 11:45 p.m., according to a warrant document filed by Officer Charles Prescott.

Riddle allegedly touched the student as he “bit her neck and pinned her hands down,” the warrant says.

Riddle was charged with sexual battery, a misdemeanor.

While the press was not alerted to the arrest, students and faculty were notified quickly in a campus email, according to Paine College Police Chief Joseph Nelson.

“We are doing everything we can to nip this kind of thing in the bud,”  Chief Nelson said.

The arrest comes after the college only recently established its first police department.

The campus was rocked in March when a 22-year-old female student was attacked at Graham Hall, an all-female dorm. She was attacked in a restroom.

Jarius R. Dantzler, 19, was charged in that assault and two others, including a Nov. 18 attempted rape of a Paine student living in Graham Hall.

The 22-year-old victim of that attack has sued the college, citing negligence in the college’s duty to provide adequate security and for not informing students of the earlier attempted sexual assault.

Chief Nelson said they are working hard to bring a secure feeling to the campus.

“We didn’t form this police department for show,” he said. “We are going to stop crime on our Paine College community. We are not going to tolerate it. We are not going to play any games.”

Meanwhile, the chief said it is his understanding that Riddle has been expelled following his arrest. The chief said the incident occurred in an apartment complex where access is not monitored by resident advisers. But there is surveillance. He said Riddle was not supposed to be visiting the victim in her room.

In the campus-wide email, students were reminded that it is against college policy for any male or female student to visit within the living quarters of the opposite sex. They are only supposed to congregate in common areas, he said.

Chief Nelson said he hopes their reaction will only bring positive feedback from the community.

“The safety of our students, our faculty and staff is a priority,” the chief said.

An Augusta man with a history of criminal offenses was charged Wednesday with felony rape after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting by force at his residence on Blake Drive, off Center West Parkway in Augusta.

Zachary Corbin, 21, is being held without bond at the Richmond County Jail on the rape charge.

Details of the rape are sketchy, but a warrant accuses the suspect of having sex with the woman “forcibly and against her will” at his home.

Corbin is well-known to local law enforcement officers, mostly in Columbia County. He has been arrested three times for driving on a suspended license.

He pleaded guilty in 2011 to a more serious offense of entering an automobile to commit theft, and a judge gave him probation. He also has convictions for theft by taking and criminal trespassing, according to a county website.

Wagener Cop Caught Drinking in Unmarked Patrol Car

A Wagener police officer was caught with a case of beer and a cooler in his unmarked patrol car early Friday and eventually charged with DUI, authorities said.

Officer Craig Elliott Martin, 30, was arrested for driving drunk after refusing to blow. He was stopped about 3:30 a.m. Friday after an Aiken County sheriff’s deputy spotted him driving suspiciously in a black Ford Crown Victoria across the street from the Kent’s Korner, 1694 Old Ninety Six Indian Trail Road, Aiken.

Martin was driving in circles around the parking lot then back into the roadway of Highway 39 North without headlights. Deputy Michael Hickson thought the officer might be conducting surveillance, so he checked it out and discovered the Wagener Police Department had a vehicle matching that description but was not conducting any surveillance.

The suspect parked the Ford behind the store near dumpsters without headlights on, but when the driver saw Deputy Hickson, he took off and headed onto Highway 39 toward Wagener. The deputy followed Martin, but Martin turned around and headed back to the store, where Deputy Hickson tracked him down and got him to stop.

Deputy Hickson immediately smelled alcohol on Martin’s breath and saw a case of beer on the passenger floor board and an open container of Bud Light in the cup holder between the seat, a report says.

Several other officers arrived, including Wagener Chief Tom Gray, but Martin clammed up after being given his Miranda rights, saying “he didn’t want to speak to law enforcement about nothing” and would not submit to field sobriety testing. Back at the Aiken County Jail, he refused to blow and was issued a ticket for DUI, which he refused to sign.

His patrol vehicle was turned over to Wagener Police.

New Policy for Private Property Accidents in Richmond Co.

$

0

In an effort to best utilize the time of our deputies, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is adopting a new policy regarding private property accidents.  Beginning Tuesday, September 17th, 2013, the RCSO will issue SR 13 forms to the drivers of vehicles involved in private property accidents.  These forms will also be available on the RCSO website, www.RCSOGA.org.  Most large agencies within the state of Georgia already handle private property accidents in this way in an effort to better utilize their limited law enforcement personnel.

As a responsible driver, you must never leave the scene of a private property or roadway accident prior to exchanging information with those involved, or those who have property that is damaged.  When involved in an accident, be aware of the traffic situation, and any other potential dangers, such as fire.  You should also activate your hazard lights or use any other suitable methods to warn other approaching vehicles.  If the vehicles are operable and no one is complaining of injuries, move the vehicles out of the roadway to the closest safe location.  If there are injuries or the accident occurs in a main roadway, please contact 911 and inform them of your accident.

If you are involved in an accident, you are required to provide certain information to the other parties involved.  Likewise, fellow motorists, passengers or pedestrians involved in the accident must share similar information with you.  Also, it is often wise to ask for the information of witnesses to the accident just in case you need to have them testify at a later date. The key information to exchange in the aftermath of an accident includes:

1.    Name, address and contact details.

2.    Driver license number.

3.    License plate number of the vehicles involved.

4.    Auto insurance information for the motorists involved.

It may also be useful to take photographs at the scene of the accident.  If you hit an unattended vehicle, you must make an effort to find the owner or driver, and follow these same procedures.  If you are unable to locate the owner of an unattended vehicle, you are required to leave a note indicating your name and contact information, and a brief description of the accident.

REPORTING AN ACCIDENT TO LAW ENFORCEMENT IS REQUIRED BY LAW UNDER THE FOLLOWING CIRCUMSTANCES:

1.    If anyone is injured or killed as a result of the accident.

2.    If damage to property exceeds $500.

3.    If the accident occurs on a county or state roadway, highway or interstate and either party requests a police report.

REPORTING AN ACCIDENT THAT OCCURS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY WILL RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING:

1.    You will be advised of how you can obtain a private property accident form online for single vehicle accidents.

2.    A deputy will respond and issue drivers of the vehicles involved an SR 13 form which may be completed and submitted to your respective insurance companies.  This form is also available online: Personal Report of Accident form

If any of the following charges are issued on private property at an accident, a state crash report will be completed:

1.       40-5-58  Habitual violator

2.       40-6-251 Laying drag

3.       40-6-390 Reckless driving

4.       40-6-391 Driving under influence

5.       40-6-392 Chemical tests for alcohol or drugs in blood

6.       40-6-393  Homicide by vehicle

7.       40-6-393.1 Feticide by vehicle

8.       40-6-394  Serious injury by vehicle

9.       40-6-395 Fleeing or attempting to elude

10.     40-6-397 Aggressive driving

An Aiken man was given an evaluation at a local hospital and then jailed after confessing that he strangled his roommate’s Chihuahua to death and stabbing a Bulldog in the eye, according to a report.

Kyle Magnus, 20, of Shadowood Drive, was charged Monday with two counts of felony cruelty to animals and two counts of ill treatment of animals.

The suspect’s 20-year-old female roommate, told police that she returned home on Sunday morning and found a cut on the right eye of her Bulldog. An officer observed the pet with a cut on the scrotum, a toe nail removed on the right foot and a small cut above the left eye, a report says.

After tracking down Magnus and hearing a lie about him being gone from home Saturday night, the suspect eventually agreed that he needed to be checked out at a local hospital for a voluntary evaluation, a report says.

While waiting for EMS, Magnus opened up to the officer about his cruel acts on his roommate’s pets.

A police report details his admission: Magnus admitted stabbing the woman’s Bulldog in the eye. He also confessed to killing her Chihuahua in July and telling his roommate that the dog had run away after chasing a cat.

Actually, Magnus said, he had flicked the Chihuahua’s teeth until three teeth came out.
“The suspect stated that when the dog lost three teeth, he felt that it was too noticeable and killed the dog by strangling it,” a report says. “The suspect stated that he then broke the neck of the dog and discarded the animal in the dumpster at Gatewood apartments.”

No motive was given. Magnus was jailed without bond.

A North Carolina man traveled Tuesday from Asheville to Grovetown, Ga., to have sex with an underage girl, authorities say.

But instead of meeting the girl, 37-year-old John Langer was greeted by Columbia County investigators who arrested him for criminal attempt felony involving aggravated child molestation.

The arrest was part of undercover sting by investigators targeting sex offenders who prey on underage girls online, sheriff’s Maj. Rick Whitaker said.

In the past, CCSO investigators have posed online as underage girls and arrested offenders who tried to arrange a sexual encounter.

Langer, an Asheville man who works a security job, remained in the Columbia County Jail on Wednesday under no bond.

RCBOE: Custodian Molested Girls at 2 Augusta Schools

FROM THE JAIL REPORT:
A custodian at C.T. Walker Magnet School has been charged with molesting a 13-year-old student at the Augusta school this year, more than a year after similar allegations were made by another girl while he worked at Murphey Middle School.

Reginald L. Price, 44, was initially charged with two felony counts of sexual battery on Wednesday, but those charges are being amended to child molestation, according to RCBOE Public Safety Chief Alfonzo Williams.

In a shocking revelation, an investigation into the Murphey Middle School allegations from March 2012 went nowhere until Price was hired full-time at C.T. Walker and was accused again by another girl this year, Chief Williams said.

At Murphey, a 13-year-old girl told authorities that Price hugged her and touched her buttocks without her consent in March 2012, according to a warrant.

Price was not charged at the time, and instead of being fired, he was promoted from sub-custodian to full-time at C.T. Walker, said Chief Williams, who was not working for the school system in 2012.

“I don’t think any mistakes were made,” Chief Williams said. “I think we just had more experienced guys looking at it (in the second case).”

He said the 2012 case was investigated by a school resource officer, who was less experienced, Chief Williams said.

Once the allegations surfaced this year at C.T. Walker, suggesting a real problem, Chief Williams personally looked into them with another officer and filed criminal charges.

The chief says they discovered that Price had been accused of similar behavior in Aiken County a few years ago and was arrested but not convicted. He said they obviously didn’t know that before Price was hired.

Chief Williams said the custodian was able to touch the girls while seeing them after school. In at least one case, he met the girl in the hallway and talked to her, and that is where the touching took place, Chief Williams said.

The girls later reported the sexual acts.

“There are some witnesses in both cases,” the chief said.

Price, 44, of North Augusta, was booked into the jail under a $11,200 bond.

A secretary at a Nationwide Insurance office in Augusta has been charged with a felony for allegedly stealing over $3,800 in cash paid by customers, according to a sheriff’s report.

Jennifer Marie Mustafa, who also goes by Jennifer Green, was arrested Wednesday for theft by taking following an investigation into thefts from the business, located at 3328 Washington Road, Augusta.

The secretary’s employer, Austin Taylor, told investigators that Mustafa took the money from customers who made cash payments. She would give the customer’s a receipt, wait for them to leave and then issue a refund, which she would pocket.

“To keep the customers’ accounts in good standing, (Mustafa) would do the same to the other cash-paying customers but would apply some of that money taken back to accounts that she had previously stolen from,” a sheriff’s report says.

According to a warrant, Mustafa confessed to sheriff’s investigators.

Customers were not impacted by the thefts, which totaled $3,850. Taylor  told The Jail Report that the business repaid the money, allowing for no impact on existing policy holders.

“No members were negatively impacted,” Taylor said.

ustafa, 33, of Pheasant Run Drive, Evans, is free on bond.
