A North Augusta man has been charged with causing his infant son’s death through abuse to the baby, authorities said.
Trevonta Langford, 26, was charged Wednesday with homicide by child abuse in the death of 2-month-old Taveon Langford. The suspect is seen here with the child in this Facebook post.
Langford called for help March 31 and met paramedics at the door of his home holding an unresponsive child. After weeks in the hospital, the child died May 13.
“It was determined that the child sustained injuries as a result of physical abuse,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said in a press release.
Langford was arrested Wednesday night at his home on Plank Road in North Augusta.
A sheriff’s report says Langford was the caretaker for the child at the time of his injuries. The baby’s mother, identified as Jamie Burnette, allowed investigators to search her home at 514 Samuels Street, where she and the suspect were living at the time of the child’s injuries.
Trevonta Langford told police on March 31 that the baby was recovering from a fever and had visited the doctor. He said the child started coughing small amounts of mucus March 31 and later stopped breathing, according to a sheriff’s report.
After the child died, the suspect and family members held a balloon release on May 27 with Langford personally posting about the death: “My family and friends that’s been here for me and know my family know how hard this is and will be for a while. I love all my family and I love my sons dearly. R.I.P. Taveon Randell Langford.”
A GoFundMe page set up May 18 by the the child’s aunt, Amanda Burnette, said Taveon passed away “due to unforeseen circumstances” on the day before Mother’s Day.
“Ever since the incident happened, my sister hasn’t left Taveon side at the hospital. Due to her having to stay at the hospital since April 1st, she was unable to work and the bills just kept piling up,” Amanda wrote on the page.
Amanda asked friends for donations so her sister could turn the child’s ashes into jewelry for her and her other children to wear. (Link to page:
While in a patrol car, Langford kicked the window, dislocating it from the rear passenger side door. He pleaded guilty and Judge Roger M. Young Sr. gave him probation.
Three weeks later, he was drunk again when he was involved in a hit and run after running a red light on Jefferson Davis Highway near midnight. He struck an SUV with three people inside, causing minor injuries to the driver and two passengers inside.
Langford wasn’t even supposed to be driving since his license was suspended, police said. Yet, he was driving and had alcohol in the vehicle. He ran from the accident, but cops captured him shortly afterward. A judge gave him fines in that case.
