Richmond County authorities say they have one of the two men in custody who fired their guns in downtown Augusta on Monday night after the Fourth of July fireworks show, injuring one of the gunmen and two innocent bystanders.

According to sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins, the gunfire resulted from a grudge between two people and they fired at each other Monday evening behind the old Fort Discovery. WRDW-TV reports the gunfight took place behind the UNISYS building on the Riverwalk.
The men were not shooting into the crowd, but at each other, Lt. Rollins said.
Yet, the gunfight not only led to one of the gunmen being shot in the face, but two bystanders were hit with superficial injuries and they were taken to the hospital. The gunman who was shot in the face brought himself to the hospital but the other gunman fled on foot, Lt. Rollins said.
A witness who posted the terrifying video of the incident said this on her Facebook page: “It broke my heart to see that woman guard her kids with her body. I was so terrified. I hope she is okay and the kids are safe.”
Full statement from RCSO: “Two subjects pulled firearms after the fireworks show had completed and started shooting at each other. One of them was struck in the face and the other fled. Two citizens recieved superficial wounds and we’re taken to AUMC to be examined. The subject shot in the face is in custody at the hospital and a subject believed to be the second shooter has arrived at the hospital as well. This is all very preliminary and the area has been cleared and secured.”
Comments online from witnesses.
Bryce Smith: “We were there, just about 30-40ft out of that video’s view down the hill when the shots rang out. We hid down in the rocks by the river with our 5 year old who was scared to death. It’s a messed up world we live in.”
Haley Fulwood: “My son went… Had me worried sick… He will never go again.”
WGAC’s Austin Rhodes reports: “I am told investigators believe the two involved are known, low life felons…neither of whom were legally eligible to carry a handgun.
… The one who took the bullet to the face will likely not survive. The other ran away from the scene, but showed up at a hospital for treatment, and he is under police watch right now. Cops were on the scene less than 30 seconds.”
