Caitlin Hawes, the 19-year-old daughter of Appling killer Wayne Anthony Hawes, has shared a family photo with The Jail Report that shows her parents and sister during happier times.
“Wayne was my dad,” Caitlin wrote to The Jail Report. “You can share this pic of us just to let everyone know who we are and that we’re OK.”
The photo shows Wayne Hawes with his oldest daughter Lauren at left, his wife Angela Dent in the middle and Caitlin Hawes at the far right. It was taken a few years ago at Friendship Baptist Church in Appling during a funeral for their uncle.
Authorities say Wayne Hawes snapped Friday and went on a shooting rampage in reaction to his wife’s decision to leave him, killing Roosevelt Burns, 75, Rheba Mae Dent, 85, and Trequila Clark, 31, on Johnson Drive in Appling. He later went to a few blocks down and killed Lizzy Williams, 59, and Shelly Williams, 62, on Washington Road.
Rheba Mae Dent was Caitlin’s grandmother and her cousin was Clark. Roosevelt Burns was her grandmother’s brother. The Williams family were close church friends and neighbors of the Hawes family.
Wayne Hawes was found dead in the garage of his home at 3311 Rosemont Road, killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Wife Angela Dent and the couple’s daughters survived by hiding at a neighbor’s house, authorities said.
The Jail Report interviewed Caitlin and will have details of that interview in the coming days, including the threats Wayne Hawes made in the weeks before the killing spree and his bizarre behavior over the years.
The Appling deaths are reported to be the largest mass killing in the county’s history.
