Columbia County authorities have identified a suspect and possible motive in Friday’s slayings of five people in Appling.
While they are not releasing a name, authorities say they are searching for a man who might have been distraught after learning his wife was divorcing him. He may have then went around and began killing the wife’s family, sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said.
Five people were fatally shot at two different locations on Johnson Drive in Appling. The locations are close enough that you can see the police lights at one location while standing at the other.
No names have been released of the victims. One died at a local hospital. The others were pronounced at the scene, authorities said.
Maj. Morris said if they are unable to find the suspect quickly, they will release his name to the public.
