Producers with the prison series “Orange is the New Black” have announced plans to film part of their episodes at the Augusta Detention Center this fall.

John Marshall, executive producer of the Netflix series, said Augusta’s jail provided the perfect backdrop for the series, which tells the story of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of transporting money to her drug-dealing girlfriend.

“We were impressed with the openness of the facility. Plus, the jail staff was open to moving inmates around for the filming schedule,” Marshall said in a press release. “We also expect to use current women from the jail as extras in the filming.”

In return for the filming at the jail, Netflix has agreed to cater meals for the entire inmate population during the four-week filming schedule.

This is not the first time Augusta has been featured on a national TV show. COPS was filmed in the area two years ago, and the sheriff was featured on a recent episode of Southern Fried Homicide, which told the story of serial killer Reinaldo Rivera.
