An Appling man has not been charged after killing his 23-year-old stepson early Thursday during a domestic dispute at their home, authorities said.

MILAMTennis Alexander Milam, 23 (pictured), was armed with a gun at 1:38 a.m. Thursday when he confronted his stepfather about calling 911, and the stepfather pulled his own gun and shot Milam, authorities said.

The stepfather, 46-year-old Anthony Thomas Sherrill, told deputies that he had called 911 because his stepson was in a heated argument with his girlfriend and wouldn’t calm down.

“He was involved in an argument with his girlfriend,” sheriff’s Capt. Butch Askew said. “He was involved in an argument with her that was getting really heated, and the mother tried to intervene and calm them down. His stepfather was in the bedroom the entire time. He called 911 and had armed himself with handgun.”

When Milam found out his stepdad had call 911, he confronted him, and Sherrill shot the young man at the home they share at 5196 North Tubman Road in Appling.

Investigators are continuing their investigation. “But there doesn’t look like at this time there will be any charges filed,” Capt. Askew said.

Dispatchers heard three shots over the phone, according to a sheriff’s report. Milam was found lying on the floor near the front door when deputies arrived. The coroner was then called.

Milam, 23, appeared in The Jail Report last month on a charge of theft by deception in Richmond County. The theft had allegedly occurred last June but he was not arrested until Feb. 20.

coupleAuthorities say Milam has a history of domestic disputes with his girlfriend, Amanda Whisenhunt (pictured with him). Last October, a clerk at the Fuel Express in Grovetown saw Milam assaulting his girlfriend while parked at a gas pump, a sheriff’s report says.

A deputy found the woman with redness around her neck and a scratch on her hand. She told authorities that Milam had punched the window on the white Nissan SUV in a rage. In that case, deputies cited Milam for disorderly conduct.

Milam is the grandson of prominent Augusta businessman L.D. Waters.
