An Augusta man was captured Thursday morning after a 12-hour standoff with authorities that escalated when the suspect shot 20 rounds at deputies. No one was hurt.
At 10 a.m. Thursday, suspect Donnie Wade Harrell was found hiding in the attic crawl space of his home at 606 Wrights Avenue, sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said.
(He’s the same man who threw his elderly mother through the screen door of his home last year and yelled “you made them take my guns.” Details below.)
Thursday’s capture ended a long night that started at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when deputies responded to a domestic disturbance. Deputies were told that Harrell had shot once at his girlfriend, who was unhurt and ran to a neighbor’s home for safety.
“Deputies arrived at the residence as Harrell was barricading himself into the residence,” Lt. Rollins said. “All avenues of a peaceful surrender were attempted and at approximately 3:30 a.m. while deputies were outside the residence, Harrell began firing approximately 20 rounds at the deputies.”
Deputies tried tear gas to force the man out, but that didn’t work. By 10 a.m., the sheriff’s office had joined forces with the Tactical Unit from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office to enter the home. They found Harrell in the attic and took him into custody after a brief struggle.
Harrell is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, terroristic threats and acts and an outstanding warrant.
Violent History. Harrell served 30 days in jail last year for throwing his elderly mother out the front door at the same residence. That sentence came at the same time as two convictions for two separate cases of simple battery.
According to a 2015 report, Harrell pushed his 73-year-old mother through the front screen door at 606 Wrights Ave.
A neighbor heard a loud bang and saw the victim crying and Harrell cursing and screaming “you made them take my guns,” the report says.
The neighbor called police and ran over to help the woman and stop Harrell from assaulting her more. The victim suffered a bloody right elbow and could not stand. She was taken to University Hospital. Deputies saw a screen door that was bent at the bottom.
A judge gave Harrell a month in jail as well as probation and fines.
In this week’s case, authorities say an incident report is not available and they have no additional details on the domestic violence case.
