An Augusta man has been arrested in the Jan. 4th fatal shooting outside a liquor store, authorities said.
Kevin Antwan Williams, a convicted drug dealer, was charged Sunday with murder in connection with the slaying of 34-year-old James J. “Mel” Sims III of Augusta (pictured). Sims was shot outside Kissingbower Package Shop on Jan. 4.
A warrant says Williams shot the victim in the chest with a handgun. Authorities are not discussing a motive or releasing any other details other than the arrest.
Suspect Background. Williams, 25, had a history of criminal activity that includes dealing marijuana in 2009. He received a three-year prison sentence, but he served just four months before being paroled.
After his release, Williams was charged with marijuana possession and controlled substance possession but he received no prison time for them. He also has convictions in 2011 for theft by receiving stolen property and fleeing police, which earned him five years of probation, according to court records.
In addition to his murder warrant, Williams is also charged with felony theft by taking for allegedly stealing a leased Nissan from someone that he was supposed to return it to.
