A man who was shot by his younger brother during a domestic dispute in Augusta on Sunday has died, and authorities say charges against the alleged shooter are likely to be upgraded.
Brandon Johnson, 34, died Friday evening at Doctors Hospital, five days after being shot at his home on the 3600 block of Madrid Drive. According to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, Johnson was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
The initial incident occurred early Sunday morning, May 25, when Richmond County deputies responded to a report of an aggravated assault on Madrid Drive North. According to a sheriff’s office incident report, deputies arrived to find 30-year-old Mark Johnson in the backyard of the home. He was detained at the scene.
Inside the house, deputies found Brandon Johnson lying in the hallway near the bathroom with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. A woman identified as Sylvia Johnson, who was administering first aid, told deputies the shooting stemmed from an argument between the two brothers.
Sylvia Johnson told deputies the dispute began over a circuit breaker located in Brandon Johnson’s room. She said Brandon had been intoxicated and was flipping switches, which upset Mark. She said she heard a gunshot and then saw Brandon collapse. She told deputies she took the handgun from Mark Johnson and secured it in a closet.
Brandon Johnson was taken to Doctors Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his death Friday.
Mark Johnson was initially charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Officials say those charges will likely be upgraded following Brandon’s death.
The investigation is ongoing.
