Richmond County authorities are investigating a crime scene after the discovery of a body at the 15th Street Bridge near Riverwatch Parkway.
Sheriff Eugene “Gino” Brantley’s Homeless Operations Team received information Tuesday that led to an active investigation in the area. Officers received a tip indicating that a body may have been previously buried beneath the bridge.
“During the investigation, a body was recovered from beneath the bridge,” a RCSO press release says. “The Richmond County Coroner’s Office responded and has been working side by side with investigators. The remains will be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy and identification.
Coroner Mark Bowen described the discovery site as “a body … in a shallow grave under the bridge.”
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Scene Unit are working alongside the Homeless Operations Team to gather more information and investigate further.
For now, authorities are keeping details to a minimum as they work to determine the full scope of the investigation.
