A tense situation was brought to a peaceful resolution on Friday afternoon when law enforcement and emergency responders successfully intervened in a potential suicide attempt on the 5th Street pedestrian bridge in Augusta.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department, Central EMS, North Augusta Public Safety, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources all responded to the scene, where a person was reportedly threatening to jump from the bridge.

A Richmond County investigator, who is also a trained negotiator, was among the first to arrive and immediately began engaging the individual. After nearly three hours, the negotiator was able to talk the person down safely, according to a press release.

Following the successful negotiation, the individual was handed over to the appropriate authorities for care and assistance.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley praised the collaborative efforts of all responding agencies, noting, “We are thankful for the cooperation from our neighboring and state agencies. Together, we worked toward a successful outcome, ensuring the individual received the care they needed. This collaborative effort highlights the dedication and commitment of all involved in serving and protecting our community.”

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office expressed their thoughts for the individual and their loved ones, reaffirming their ongoing commitment to providing compassionate care for those in crisis.
