An officer-involved shooting is under investigation following a domestic dispute Thursday in Richmond County.

At approximately 1:06 p.m., Richmond County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a domestic dispute at a residence on Primrose Drive, according to a RCSO statement. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a female complainant who reported that a man she knew had stolen her firearm and left the home prior to the deputies’ arrival.

Minutes later, a deputy located the suspect near 2941 Glenn Hills Drive, in front of Glenn Hills Middle School, based on the description provided by the complainant. When the deputy attempted to make contact, the suspect allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband, prompting the deputy to fire his weapon, the RCSO statement says.

The suspect was struck and immediately transported to Doctors Hospital in critical condition.

The deputy’s body-worn camera captured the incident, and the footage has been handed over to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigation Team for review. The Richmond County District Attorney’s Office has also been notified of the incident, the statement said.

The identity of the suspect has not been made public at this time.

Principal Marvin Washington of Glenn Hills Middle School told parents about the shooting. He said they reacted by to the off-campus shooting by limiting class transitions and suspending outdoor movement. The school eventually resumed a normal schedule with additional support from RCSS Police for the remainder of the day.
