An Augusta man was killed on Monday afternoon in a collision with a vehicle while riding his dirt bike.
Latrell Shubert, 36, was traveling east on Milledgeville Road around 3:15 p.m. when the accident occurred. According to authorities, a Ford Edge traveling west turned in front of him near Golden Camp Road, causing Shubert to collide with the vehicle’s passenger side.
Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed that Shubert was pronounced dead at the scene about 30 minutes after the crash. An autopsy is scheduled, and the investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
Shubert, who made headlines for his involvement in a 2015 drive-by shooting that resulted in the death of 20-year-old Edwin Dean Williams Jr., had served six years of a 10-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter before being paroled just over a year ago. During his plea, prosecutors said Williams was shot four times during a block party on Amsterdam Drive.
Friends and family took to social media to remember him. He was a biking enthusiast with several recent videos of dirt-bike adventures on his Facebook page.
In his last Facebook post from the weekend, Shubert expressed gratitude for a community event he attended, sharing, “I swear when I see the kids happy and getting along, it’s a beautiful sight. My day was very good. I love the kids. Thanks to my brothers for being there. Y’all know who y’all are.”
