An Augusta man has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and two felony counts after hitting and killing a homeless man on a bicycle Monday evening.
Anthony Way, 66, is facing charges of DUI, felony homicide by vehicle, and felony leaving the scene of an accident.
The victim, identified as 47-year-old Malcolm Leonard Kelly, was riding his bicycle on Milledgeville Road at Murphy Road when he was struck by a vehicle around 5:35 p.m. Kelly was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m., according to Coroner Mark Bowen.
Way reportedly fled the scene after the crash, but investigators were able to identify him quickly. He was arrested later that evening.
Authorities say Way has a criminal history, including convictions for cocaine possession, theft, domestic violence, trespassing, and traffic violations. He is being held without bond at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
This is at least the 10th pedestrian death in Richmond County this year, with several of them involving homeless victims. Last Thursday, 53-year-old Jerico Blair, a homeless man, was fatally struck by a vehicle on the 2500 block of Meadowbrook Drive.
