
Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in Augusta, bringing this year’s homicide count to 49.
At 11:22 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Picquet Avenue in response to reports of a shooting. The coroner said a male was found down in the street at Picquett Ave and Gordon Street.
The victim, identified as 73-year-old James West, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:43 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities have not released any details about potential suspects. The incident is under active investigation and an autopsy is planned.
The fatal shooting marks the 49th homicide in Richmond County this year with four weeks to go. There were a total of 38 homicides last year.
