Columbia County authorities are searching for an Evans man on child cruelty charges after his 1-year-old grandson ingested meth while visiting him, officials said.

Cleveland Everette Hair Jr. is wanted on charges of second-degree cruelty to children. He also faces additional warrants for meth possession and probation violation. Hair has a lengthy criminal history, including charges for obstruction, fleeing from police, and drug use.

The incident occurred in September when the child’s mother allowed her son to stay with his grandparents at their Evans home. On Sept. 11, the Toccoa woman was scheduled to pick up her child, but when they met in Elberton, Ga., she noticed that the child was not acting right. Concerned, she took the child to the local emergency room, where doctors immediately transferred him to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Atlanta.

At the hospital, medical staff found a suspicious substance in the child’s system, which led them to contact the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS). Tests later confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine.

The mother told authorities that she believes the drugs came from the grandparents’ home and suspects the meth may have belonged to her father-in-law, Cleveland Hair.

Hair is thought to be driving a white 2013 Nissan Frontier, which has been spray-painted black. Authorities believe he may be in the Williston, S.C., area.

Anyone with information about Hair’s whereabouts is urged to contact Columbia County Investigator Cooper at 706-541-1044 during business hours, or CCSO Dispatch at 706-541-2800 at any time.
