A 15-year-old boy from Augusta died on Wednesday after being involved in a gunfight with a 19-year-old male on Helinski Road, according to authorities.
Ricky Antwavious Holmes, 19, of Vernon Drive, was also shot in the pelvis around 6 p.m. while firing at the victim, 15-year-old Devayn Grissam, outside a home on Helsinki Drive. Grissam sustained a fatal shot to the torso and later died at MCG Wellstar Health.
Holmes received treatment at the same hospital and was transferred to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Friday, facing a charge of murder.
A 16-year-old girl, Aukeidris Cooper, has also been charged with murder. Authorities say she is the only resident of Helsinki Street and had warned Grissam that a shooting was going to occur involving him. Grissom lived on Boykin Road, about seven miles away, authorities said.
Shortly thereafter, Holmes and Grissam engaged in the gunfight outside 2346 Helsinki Drive. It remains unclear whether Cooper will be charged as an adult, as she is considered a juvenile under Georgia law, despite being only a week away from her 17th birthday. Her mugshot has not been released.
According to records from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Grissam’s death marks the seventh homicide involving a teenager this year. The Grissam family has expressed their grief online, with Aisha Grissam stating, “I’m glad they caught both individuals involved in my nephew’s death! It’s going to be a slow process to heal.”
