A man discovered in the Augusta Canal over the weekend had been dead for several days, according to Coroner Mark Bowen.
The body was recovered on Saturday near the 1400 block of Greene Street, close to the Salvation Army.
Bowen described the case as suspicious, stating, “The body of a male was recovered from the canal and is considered a suspicious death at this time.”
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident. Acting Lt. Caleb Lee indicated that the body was found in a tributary of the Augusta Canal, under the bridge on Greene Street.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the GBI lab in Atlanta, which may provide further insights into the circumstances of the death. The man’s identity will be released once confirmed by officials.
