An Augusta man is accused of a violent sexual assault on a woman who he forced into her home, tied up and beat, authorities said.
Darrell Edwards, 39, forced the victim into her Clark Street residence late Monday before the sexual assault occurred, according to acting sheriff’s Lt. Caleb Lee.
“Deputies learned from the victim that the subject had forced her in the residence, tied her up, beat her, and sexually assaulted her until she was able to free herself and call for help several hours later,” Lt. Lee said. “The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.”
Investigators responded to the woman’s call for help and made contact with Edwards, who refused to exit the residence. Officers obtained a search warrant and arrest warrants and took the suspect into custody just before 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Edwards was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy and false imprisonment. He is being held without bond in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
Edwards has a previous conviction for hindering a person from making an emergency call, which led to probation and fines.
