Richmond County authorities have locked up a suspect in the weekend shooting death of a man at the Oakview Place Apartments in Hephzibah.
Charlie Demmons, 29, is charged with murder and weapon possession in Saturday’s slaying of 22-year-old Stephon Jones.
Authorities received reports of the shooting around 3:03 a.m. Saturday and arrived to find Jones suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite efforts to provide aid, he succumbed to his injuries.
After an investigation, officers discovered that Demmons and the victim had been arguing when the suspect shot Jones and then fled into his residence in Oakview Place Apartments.
Demmons is being held under no bond at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
The victim is being remembered online by those who loved him. Cece Bryant said her son’s death was “so heartbreaking that I don’t know if I can take this.”
“Son I’m sorry I couldn’t save you, but believe me I won’t rest until this is solved,” Bryant said in a Saturday post before the arrest was made.
Quasheria Wiggins said she couldn’t believe the news of his death. She remembered him as a former work colleague.
“All you did was make people laugh and that was how we made it through work,” Wiggins said on Facebook. “We stayed joking and stuff. I remember we made a commercial about the orange juice at work. All I remember you saying is ‘H&B is the place you want to be, best orange juice since 2003’ Rest up my dawg you will be missed.”
