An Augusta man has died from injuries suffered in wreck last week on Barton Chapel Road.
Daveon Sherrod, 21, was rushed to Doctors Hospital last Thursday after a crash at Barton Chapel Road and Old Barton Chapel Road. He died Sunday at the hospital, Coroner Mark Bowen announced Tuesday.
In a post on her Facebook page, Sherron’s mother falsely claimed that the wreck was the result of a hit & run. Lakeyshia Sherrod posted this: “The person hit my son and left him for dead and kept going. If anybody know any information plz hit my line, or inbox.”
But an accident report from the sheriff’s office shows that the teenage driver involved in the collision stayed on the scene and gave officers a full account of what happened. The 19-year-old driver said she came up behind Sherrod’s moped and saw he was swerving all over the roadway and that he was driving with no helmet on.
The teen driver said she decided to pass the moped driver because she was unsure of what he was doing. As she passed him, Sherrod swerved to the left and side-swiped her car.
“(Sherrod) lost control of the vehicle and was ejected from the vehicle. The area of impact was in the central left turn lane,” the report says.
Sherrod was found at fault for failure to maintain lane while the teen was found at fault for improper use of the central left turn lane, the report says.
