A woman died Wednesday night from injuries suffered in a weekend shooting on Ellis Street in the Harrisburg community of Augusta.
The victim was shot Saturday afternoon on the 1900 block of Ellis Street and rushed by paramedics to Wellstar MCG Health. She was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Coroner Mark Bowen said.
Neighbors on Ellis Street reported that the victim was an older lady who was shot in a drive-by shooting, but the sheriff’s office has not confirmed that or released an incident report.
“My prayers are up,” one witness said on Facebook. “I live in Harrisburg and was on my bike going to Broad Street [and] took a shortcut through Ellis Street. … Came to find out who was shot? [An] innocent bystander elderly woman at the wrong place and wrong time. Wasn’t meant for her in the process.”
The coroner’s office is working to find family to notify before releasing the victim’s name.
The sheriff’s office has not released details or possible suspects in the case.
The homicide marks the 27th homicide in Richmond County this year. There had only been 22 homicides in the county at this same point last year, according to sheriff’s office statistics. There were a total of 37 last year.
