The coach of Midland Valley High School’s football team has been placed on leave after last weekend’s alleged violence against his fiancée, an arrest that followed a DUI charge in May.
Earl Chaptman Jr., 36, was charged Saturday with second-degree domestic violence, for allegedly engaging in a physical altercation with his fiancée, resulting in her sustaining injuries.
According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at Chaptman’s residence on Corner Stroll Lane in Aiken to find him resisting entry after reports of yelling and a scream. Upon gaining access, deputies detained Chaptman.
The victim reported that following a verbal argument earlier in the evening, Chaptman prevented her from entering the residence, threw her to the ground multiple times, and withheld her identification and debit cards to prevent her from contacting authorities.
Chaptman minimized the incident as a verbal disagreement and expressed confidence that the victim would retract her accusations. However, the victim said she intends to press charges and seek a protective order, citing visible injuries.
In response to the arrest, the Aiken County School District placed Chaptman on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident. The district said that preparations for the upcoming football season are ongoing under the guidance of Midland Valley’s Athletic Director and assistant coaching team.
This arrest follows a previous incident earlier this year when Chaptman was arrested for DUI by North Augusta Public Safety around 5 a.m. on May 4. In that case, a report says Chaptman was pulled over on I-520 for speeding and an officer found him with bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.
Chaptman claimed that he had come from a bar with friends and was serving as the designated driver, but he was charged with DUI after refusing to perform field sobriety tests, a report says.
