The body of a homeless woman was found in the backyard of a vacant Augusta home on Monday morning, authorities said.
Chandra Buffington, 47, was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the home on 3018 Abelia Drive. But she may have been dead for a day or so, Coroner Mark Bowen said. (She went by “Chanda” on Facebook and friends say that is how they knew her in high school.)
There were no obvious signs of foul play, but the death is still considered “suspicious” pending an autopsy, the coroner said. The home where she was found was being remodeled.
Buffington has a long history of drug arrests in the region for meth, cocaine and other drugs. In fact, on June 13, she was arrested in Edgefield County, S.C., for meth distribution and spent four days there before making bail. She was then transferred to Saluda County, S.C., on pending forgery charges. Buffington spent a week there before she was released on June 25.
At the time of her arrest, she listed her address as Willis Foreman Road in Hephzibah.
