A trooper with the Georgia State Patrol was seriously injured Friday night after being struck overnight Saturday by a wrong-way driver on Riverwatch Parkway.
Around 11:09 p.m. Friday, a trooper was traveling east on Riverwatch Parkway near mile marker 3.5 when he was struck head on by a Toyota 4Runner that was traveling in the wrong direction, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
“The trooper sustained serious injuries, and had to be extricated from the vehicle,” said TFC2 Joshua Staff with the Georgia State Patrol. “He along with the other driver were transported to Wellstar MCG. This is still an active investigation and SCRT-E responded to it.”
Shocking video posted to social media shows an SUV driver on the wrong side of the parkway.
“Guys, there is somebody driving down the wrong side of Riverwatch right now,” says the man recording the video from his vehicle.
Additional video shows the aftermath of a subsequent crash, with a nurse from a local hospital talking to the driver and the victim’s vehicle underneath the back tires of the SUV.
“Hey! What is your name? What is your name?” says a woman talking to the injured wrong-way driver. “I am Jessica. I work at the hospital. We are going to treat you. … Do you have any family. Can we call somebody?”
A trooper is seen approaching the passenger side of the wrong-way driver’s vehicle. It’s unclear whether the trooper was the one injured in the other vehicle.
