Aiken County Deputies Catch Murder Suspect After Manhunt

A fatal shooting in rural Aiken County has left one person dead and one under arrest for murder.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aiken County rushed to 285 Jeffcoat Road in the Wagener area in response to a shooting call. Upon arrival, law enforcement found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said.

The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by Aiken County EMS to Lexington Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, Coroner Darryl Ables said. The victim is identified as 53-year-old Timothy Davenport, and he will be autopsied in Newberry.

Eyewitnesses to the shooting recounted a harrowing scene, describing the suspected shooter as a Black male clad in a white tank top and black sweatpants who fled the residence just before deputies reached the scene.

In the wake of the shooting, deputies started a manhunt the area to find the suspect. The pursuit is centered around Jeffcoat Road, extending towards the outskirts of Wagener’s town limits.

Around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, deputies found the suspect, 22-year-old Jonathan Daquan Staley, on Highway 302 after residents notified deputies of his whereabouts of Staley as the suspect walked along the side of the road. He is facing charges of murder and weapon possession.
