
An Augusta man died from injuries after wrecking his car Sunday into a canal, causing his vehicle to become partially submerged,
Deveunte Zavien Calloway, a 26-year-old resident of Augusta, lost his life in the incident. The incident unfolded on Old Savannah Road at 13th Avenue.
Calloway was behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla when he lost control, veered off the road, and crashed into a fence and guardrail. The vehicle came to rest partially submerged in the canal, Coroner Mark Bowen said.
Emergency responders from the Fire and EMS departments swiftly arrived at the scene and worked to extricate Calloway from the vehicle. Despite their efforts, Calloway’s injuries proved fatal. He was rushed to Wellstar / MCG, where medical personnel pronounced him dead at 9:19 p.m. Sunday, Bowen said.
At present, the Richmond County Coroner’s Office has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Calloway’s death. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
