A day care worker in Grovetown was charged Tuesday with simple battery on a toddler, accused of pushing a 1-year-old boy on the playground.

Lataya Regine-Monae Davis, 26, of Grovetown, works for Next Generation Learning Center at 325 Old Wrightsboro Road.

“Officers learned that a parent had arrived to pick up their child and found them to be visibly upset and inconsolable,” Grovetown Police Chief Jamey Kitchens said in a press release.

The mother contacted police and officers viewed video of the incident. It showed Davis approaching the toddler on the playground and pushing him in his torso with her foot.

“He fell and landed in a seated position,” Chief Kitchens said. “At the time of the incident, the child was standing on the playground with several other children.”

The child did not appear to have suffered any injuries as a result, he said. But Davis was arrested for simple battery and taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.

Chief Kitchens said this is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information concerning this event, or others, is encouraged to contact the Grovetown Police Department at 706-863-1212.
